“Who is it now?” I say and stop kissing Grace
“Go open the door. I’m almost finished” Grace said with a giggle. I walk to the front door and I open it. What is this now?
“Lisa?” My ex is in front of me looking at me with a sad face
“Hi Steven”
“It has been a long time,” I say
“Yeah. I have to talk to you about something important. Otherwise, I wasn’t bothering you” she says and she looks worried and depressive.
“Sure. Come in” I say and I let her in. We walk to the living room and she sits down
“Do you want something to drink? We already eat breakfast.”
“No, I’m good. I have to say something to you and I don’t know how you’ll take it” she says and she sighs
“Wait. We?” She asks in surprise.
“Yes. Me and Grace. My...”
“Steven your mom is on the phone,” Grace says walking to me with my phone. I just left it in the kitchen.
“Hi,” Grace says to Lisa and gives me the phone. I say to Mother that I will call her later and I return to the living room
“Grace this is Lisa,” I say and I point to Lisa
“Lisa this is Grace. You have been together for a few months now.”
“That’s great. I’m happy for you.” She says and I can say she is happy about me
“s**t that makes it more difficult for me to say that I’m here for,” she says Grace takes my hand and we sit together on the couch opposite Lisa
“You can talk freely. Is not a problem.” Grace says
“I see you are worried and scared about something,” Grace says and I nod to try to give courage to Lisa.
“Ok. Let’s take from the beginning.” She sighs
“Two months after I left I found out I was pregnant but I thought the baby was mine and Alan's. We didn’t get close often before I left so I believed that it was Alan’s baby.” s**t, what is she talking about? I have a kid?
“What are you saying, Lisa?” I say and Grace holds my hand. I'm so happy that I have her next to me.
“I didn’t know until four months ago.”
“What?”
“You have a son Steven. His name is Arthur.”
“And why do you tell me now?” I ask a little shaken but Grace holds my hand
“Arthur has leukemia,” she says and starts crying.
“He needs...” she can’t talk, sobbing. Grace leaves my hand and goes to her. She caresses her back and tries to comfort her. What an amazing person. My ex came here telling me that I have a son who is sick and my Grace trying to comfort her.
“What the doctors said?” Grace asked her giving her a tissue
“They try some treatment but he needs transplant bone marrow. That’s how we found out that Alan is not his dad. Only with you besides Alan, I have been with”
“You need Steven to test to find out if it is compatible”
“Yes,” Lisa says, and her voice breaks. Grace looking at me. I stand up and I go to the kitchen. I rest my palms on the kitchen counter taking deep breaths. After a while, I feel Grace caress my back. I can easily sense that is her. Her touch makes me calm and relaxes in seconds.
“Are you ok?”
“I have a son,” I say still not believing
“I know. And he needs you baby” she says looking at me. I turn my head and look at her too.
“You don’t mind?”
“Why do I mind that? Baby look at me” she says and she turns my body around and takes my hands in hers.
“Do you want him in your life?” She asks with confidence. I want him but I also don’t want to lose her.
“Yes. But only if you are with me.” She caresses my cheek
“If you want me of course I will be with you. This doesn’t change what I feel about you. “ I hold her closer to me and kiss her.
“Go talk to Lisa. I will bring her a cup of tea. She is really upset” she says and I nod. I walk to the living room and I see Lisa.
“Steven I’m sorry if I bring you problems”
“Don’t say that again. I will do every test I need to do. I just hope I’m compatible. But if I’m not you be sure that I’m with you on this. His is my son too so I will do whatever you need me to do.”
“Thank you, Steven.” She says and wipes her tears
“Grace is really good too. She shows understanding, I hope not to bring you problems.”
“You didn’t. As you say Grace is understanding. I'm very lucky” I say and Grace walks in with Lisa’s water
“Here. I make you tea” Grace says and gives the cup
“Thank you.” Lisa drinks a little
“As I say to Steven, I hope my presence and Arthur won't be a problem”
“Don’t ever say that. What matters now is for Arthur to be ok.”
“I hope so.”
“Is not my specialty but I would like to come with Steven for the test”
“Of course. That will be great. You will understand more about this from us” Lisa says
“We can leave whatever you want. Even tomorrow. We will deal with arrangements today and tomorrow morning we can leave for Boston” I say
“Of course. I’m staying at my parent's house. You can find me there.” Lisa says and stands up. We exchanged phone numbers and she left.
“Everything is going to be ok.”
“What if I’m not compatible?”
“You know what Steven? I have a good feeling about that. He will be ok. You know what I’m worried about?”
“What?” I ask with a frown
“He will accept you. But if he doesn’t like me?” She asks and I laugh
“You are an amazing person. Why he will not like you?” She lifts her shoulders
“I hope he lets us in. He lived life until now with Lisa and Alan. What if he doesn’t want us in his life?”
“He will baby don’t worry,” she says and she kisses me. After a while, she left for the hospital and I left for the station. I finished everything that needed to be done and I gave orders to Bill for what to do in my absence.
I hope everything goes well. I don’t want to lose my son now that I find him.
