Shadows of Destiny Episode 2: The Chase Begins Kai's heart pounded as the shadowy figures stepped out of the darkness. Their black armor shimmered beneath the moonlight, and crimson symbols glowed faintly across their helmets. Each warrior carried a blade that seemed to absorb the light around it, making the forest feel colder with every passing second. "There is no escape," the leader declared in a deep, emotionless voice. "Hand over the Sword of Destiny, and your death will be swift." Kai tightened his grip on the glowing sword. His hands trembled. "I don't know who you are," he shouted, "and I don't know what this sword is!" The soldiers exchanged knowing glances. "He has awakened," one of them whispered. Without another word, they charged. Kai reacted instinctively. He raised the sword to defend himself. The instant the enemy's blade struck his own, brilliant blue energy erupted from the weapon. A powerful shockwave exploded through the forest, knocking the attackers backward and snapping ancient trees like dry branches. The earth trembled. Birds burst into the night sky. Kai stared at the sword in disbelief. "I... I did that?" The leader slowly stood, brushing dust from his armor. "So the prophecy speaks the truth," he said. "The Guardian has returned." Fear gripped Kai's chest. He turned and ran. The forest became a blur as branches scraped his face and roots threatened to trip him. Behind him, the Shadow Legion pursued with unnatural speed, their footsteps echoing like thunder. "Don't let him escape!" A bolt of crimson magic shot past Kai's shoulder and exploded against a tree, sending splinters flying. He barely avoided another blast by diving behind a fallen log. His breathing became heavy. His legs burned with exhaustion. "I can't keep running forever," he muttered. Just as one of the soldiers leaped toward him, an arrow whistled through the air. It struck the ground between Kai and the attacker, releasing a flash of green light that forced the soldiers back. "Move!" a confident voice shouted. A young woman dropped gracefully from the trees, dressed in a dark green cloak. She carried a long bow across her back and two curved daggers at her waist. Her silver eyes scanned the battlefield with calm determination. She looked at Kai. "If you want to survive, follow me!" Kai didn't hesitate. Together they sprinted through the forest while arrows rained behind them, slowing the pursuing soldiers. "Who are you?" Kai asked between breaths. "My name is Lyra," she replied. "Questions can wait until we're alive." They reached the edge of a cliff where an old stone bridge stretched across a deep ravine. "The bridge!" Kai shouted. "No." Lyra grabbed his arm and pulled him toward a hidden opening concealed by vines. A narrow tunnel led beneath the cliff. As soon as they entered, she pulled a hidden lever. Massive stones crashed down, sealing the entrance just as the Shadow Legion arrived outside. The cave fell silent. Kai leaned against the wall, trying to catch his breath. "You saved me," he said quietly. Lyra nodded. "For now." She noticed the glowing blue markings spreading across Kai's right arm. The symbols pulsed with the same light as the sword before slowly fading beneath his skin. Her expression changed. "I was afraid this day would come." "What are these marks?" Kai asked. "They are the Mark of the Guardian." "The Guardian?" Lyra took a deep breath. "For centuries, legends have spoken of a warrior chosen by the Sword of Destiny. The Guardian alone can stop the Shadow King from covering the world in endless darkness." Kai laughed nervously. "You're talking about me?" "I wish I weren't." Silence filled the cave. Kai looked at the sword lying beside him. Only hours earlier, he had been gathering herbs for his grandmother. Now strangers hunted him, magic flowed through his veins, and ancient prophecies carried his name. "This can't be real." "It is," Lyra replied softly. "And it's only the beginning." Before Kai could respond, the ground shook violently. Dust rained from the ceiling. A deep roar echoed from somewhere beneath the cave, ancient and powerful enough to make the walls tremble. Kai and Lyra exchanged uneasy glances. "What was that?" Kai whispered. Lyra slowly drew one of her daggers. "There are creatures sleeping beneath these mountains," she said. "Creatures that should never awaken." Another roar thundered through the darkness. Then came the sound of enormous footsteps. Something was coming. And it was getting closer.
