CHAPTER ONE
Watching the dancing couples, I had a smile on my face.
Watching my sister, Ife, and her new husband, Emeka slow dance to Always & Forever made my heart glow. It almost made the discomfort I felt in the fitter corset dress worth it.
Almost.
With my head propping my chin, I looked at them as they danced, mouthing the words of the popular song to each other, loving their love.
I then remembered I've been trying to reach my fiancee, Oye who hasn't been picking his call. I just sneaked out of the party to his place so as to know exactly what is wrong wrong with him.
CHAPTER TWO
Getting to Ikoyi, I couldn't help but wonder what Oye was doing, Was he in bed recuperating from his supposed Stomach pain or was he out with the boys? I suddenly felt the urge to find out myself.
As I neared his house, I had a hollow feeling in my stomach with a premonition I just couldn't shake. I approached his house my heart racing and my stomach churning, I turned the car off and gained entry into the compound through the pedestrian gate, using the access code he gave me. I was temporarily relived to see his car parked outside.I let myself into the house and the first signs I saw that things weren't right were the glass cups in the living room, two of them, one of which had a prominent lipstick stain on it, in a bright red shade that clearly wasn't mine. Looking around,I saw a woman's handbag, a small channel purse which was more likely to come from Chinatown than any legitimate chanel store, and a pair of black, patent stilettos...... neither of which belonged to me.
CHAPTER THREE
With my heart pounding violently, I went upstairs, the sharp unfamiliar perfume I could smell getting stronger and stronger with each step I took. And then I pushed the bedroom door open, I got the shock of my life.
Oye, My Oye , Lay naked and asleep, intertwined with another woman. I stared at them as they slept. The love of my life and another Woman on the pillow I had picked. On the sheet I bought.
Oye opened his eyes and sat up with a start when he saw me "Jesus" he exclaimed "Ara, what are you doing here?"
I said nothing . Instead I remained rooted to the spot , unable to look away.
His companion awoke and grabbed the sheet to cover her nakedness , staring at me with wide , frightened eyes, as if waiting for me to jump on her and beat her to a pulp.
I had seen her somewhere.
"Beverly wait," Oye said to her, getting out of the bed and throwing on his robe. Still rooted to the spot, I looked at him clothe his naked body , the body only I was supposed to see, to touch . "Let's go" taking my hand and leading me out of the room.
CHAPTER FOUR
"Who is she?" was all I could say when we were out of the room and I had finally found my voice . "Is that the reason you didn't come for the wedding ?
He signed and closed his eyes."What can I say Ara? I didn't want you to find out this way."
"Find out what?
"You know it's not been working out with us for a while now." He answered, with a casual shrug. "You know we have been drifting apart for a while."
"Find out what?" I repeated,my voice louder this time.
"About Beverly." he answered. "We have been seeing each other for a while, and I think I'm in love with her. I'm sorry, Ara, but it's over. We're over."
I stared at him, my mouth agape, not having the words to say to him in response
"I'm really sorry," he was still speaking, "if you want we can talk about it tomorrow. But you have to leave now. I'm sure Beverly is pretty traumatized already."
He was sure Beverly was pretty traumatized? What about me?
"I've seen her at the Boat club before." I said. "You told me she was friends with Sesan sister."
He took me by the hand and started to lead me down the stairs. "It's late, Ara. Let's talk about this tomorrow." Midway down the stairs, he stopped. "You can see yourself out. Let me go back to make sure she's okay."
I floated downstairs like a zombie, still not understanding what had just transpired. I had found my fiance in bed with another woman,in the bed I picked out.......in the sheets I'd bought.....in the room I'd designed.
Standing at the foot of the stairs, I looked around at the house, and the anger finally came.
CHAPTER FIVE
Storming out, I opened the main gate with the access code, went over to my car and turned it on. Aerosmith's Cryin' came back on, and stepping on the accelerator, I sped into the compound, knocking past the lawn barricades and hedges, and rammed into the house, shattering glasses as I did. Not satisfied, I put the car in reverse all the way back out of the compound, and charging towards it again, aiming this time for another angle. By this time all the alarms were blaring, and I could hear screaming from inside.
But I wasn't done yet.
I set the car in reverse, for another angle.
