The world went black.
A low hum filled the air mechanical, rhythmic, alive. Aurora's pulse thuded in her ears as she pressed her palms against the cold floor, trying to steady her breath. Then, the emergency lights flickered back on, casting the corridor in a dim red glow that painted everything like a crime scene.
"Damon?" she whispered. No answer. The glass that had separated them moments ago was now opaque, frost spreading across its surface like veins. She slammed her hand against it. "Damon!"
On the other side, Damon Knight stood frozen, surrounded by the glow of monitors flashing "PHASE II - ACTIVE". He could barely hear her through the static in his earpiece, but her voice cut through the noise, desperate and trembling.
He knew this was no longer an experiment. It was containment.
A door sealed shut behind him with a heavy clang, locking him inside the control chamber. Systems rebooted on their own, showing lines of code he didn't recognize sequences that weren't in the original project. His own login had been overridden.
"Unauthorized access detected", the AI chimed in a monotone voice. Then the screens shifted and Ethan's file appeared again.
Damon's heart sank. The heartbeat signal they'd seen wasn't just data. It was live feed from a containment pod below the facility.
Aurora was running now, down the corridor, the red lights pulsing like a heartbeat. "Ethan... he's alive", she whispered to herself, the realization cutting through her like glass. "They lied to me. Damon lied to me"
She stopped mid-sentence as a sound echoed ahead heavy breathing, disorted, mechanical. A figure stepped out from the shadows in a hazmat suit, a rifle raised.
"Don't move ", the soldier barked. "Phase II subjects must be contained".
"Subjects?" she repeated, backing away. "I'm not"
But before she could finish, another explosion rocked the hallway. The soldier was thrown aside, the air filling with smoke and debris. Aurora coughed, disoriented, as a strong arm pulled her back into a maintenance shaft.
"Stay queit", a voice hissed. Damon. His face was streaked with blood and soot. "They activated the secondary protocol. Everyone inside this floor is marked for elimination".
She stared at him, disbelief warring with fear. "You knew, you knew this could happen!"
"I didn't know they'd reactivate him", he snapped. "Ethan wasn't supposed to"
"Ethan wasn't supposed to die either!" she cut in, her voice breaking.
The silence that followed was louder than the alarms.
Damon's jaw clenched. "If we stay here, we die. Come on".
They crawled through the vent, metal groaning beneath their weight. Below them, Aurora saw containment pods being opened, one by one and people staggering out. Or what used to be people. Their eyes glowed faintly, like embers, and their movements were jerky, unnatural.
"Phase II isn't an experiment", Damon whispered, horror dawning in his voice. "It's resurrection".
Aurora's breath hitched. "You mean Ethan ?"
But before he could answer, one of the figures looked up and smiled.
"Aurora..." the voice rasped, broken but unmistakable.
Her heart stopped.
"Ethan?"
Damon grabbed her arm. "Don't. That's not him anymore"
The creature her brother lunged at the vent, it's hand slamming against the metal, sending vibrations through her body. Damon pulled her forward, forcing her down the shaft as sparks flew and alarms screamed.
They dropped into a lower maintenance room, crashing hard. Damon winced, blood seeping from his shoulder. Aurora scrambled up, shaking. "What the hell did they do to him?"
"They uploaded his neutral map into ECHO Damon said, struggling to catch his breath. "He's not alive. He's a digital ghost inhabiting a reconstructed body".
Her knees went weak. "You used my brother as a weapon".
"I tried to stop them", he said quietly. "That's why i left the project. But someone, someone restarted it".
The lights flickered again, and an eerie static-filled voice echoed through the room's speakers, Ethan's voice, disorted but clear.
"You took everything from me, Aurora. Now
I'll take you".
Aurora's tears froze in her eyes. Damon stepped in front of her, gun raised toward the camera. "Ethan, if you can hear me"
"Oh, I hear you", the voice interrupted. "You were supposed to protect her, Damon. Instead, you made her fall in love with her enemy".
The speakers cut out.
And the door in front of them slid open with a mechanical hiss.
Aurora's trembling hand found Damon's. "What do we do now?"
Damon's gaze hardened. "We finish what they started".
The hallway ahead was dark, lined with shadows that whispered of betrayal, blood, and broken love.
And somewhere beyond it, Ethan waited.
The experiment had begun.
But the real war was only just starting.
