The Experiment

The corridors of Knight Industries were dead silent at this hour. The kind of silence that pressed against the skin and made every heartbeat sound like a confession. Damon's footseps echoed faintly on the marble floor as he moved deeper into the restricted research wing a place even his clearance had once been denied. Tonight, he wasn't asking for permission. His card beeped green against the biometic scanner, the door hissing open with a low hum. The cold air hit instantly, sharp with disinfectant and electricity. Rows of dark monitors lined with walls, each flickering with encrypted data streams. In the center of the room stood a massive screen marked only with a symbol three intersecting circles and a single world beneath it: PROJECT: ECHO He froze. That symbol was tattooed behind the ear of every soldier who'd served in his father's convert program. Including Ethan Steele, Aurora's brother. Damon's jaw tightened. "What the hell were you hiding, Father?" He typed a command sequence he'd memorized from a stolen document weeks ago. The screen shuddered, then unblocked a series of archived videos. The first one opened automatically dated April 17, 2020, the night Ethan died. [Video log 342 - Test Subject 07: E. Steele.] A white room. Ethan strapped to a chair, electrodes pulsing on his chest. Voice - muffed but sharp. "Increase the dose. We need to test the echo link". "He's not stable " "Do it" Damon's hand clenched around the edge of the desk. The monitor flashed as Ethan convulsed violently, eyes rolled back and then the flatline tone filled the room. The camera turned briefly, showing a man in a lab coat signing the death report. Damon leaned closer, heart pounding. He knew that face. It was his father's head of R&D, Dr. Lionel Voss. The words below the signature chilled him: Authorized by D. Knight. His breath hitched. His own name. His father's name. For a moment, Damon couldn't breath. His body went rigid, every muscle screaming in disbelief. His father had ordered the experiment that killed Ethan Steele the very event that destroyed Aurora's life. And somehow... his own company had buried it. He stared at the screen until the video ended, replaced by a final line of code: ECHO STATUS: ACTIVE. "What does that mean?" he whispered. "Active? Now Then it hit him. If ECHO was active, it meant the program wasn't over. Someone had continued it. Meanwhile, across town, Aurora Steele sat in her dim apartment, staring at her laptop. The same laptop that had mysteriously deleted her file last night. Her reflection glimmered faintly in the screen, pale and tense. She hadn't slept. The same name kept looping in her mind - Project: ECHO. When she'd infiltrated Knight Industries, she thought she was chasing a name tied to her brother's death. But what she found was bigger. Every whistleblower who mentioned ECHO had dissapeared. And now, even her own data was vanishing. Her phone buzzed suddenly a blocked number. She hesitated before answering. "Who is this?" A disorted male voice crackled through the speaker. "You're getting too close, Miss Steele. ECHO isn't just an experiment. It's alive". Then the line went dead. Aurora's breath came fast. Her hand shook as she set the phone down, eyes darting to the window. A shadow moved outside just a flicker, gone as fast as it appeared. Her stomach dropped. She wasn't alone. She reached for the drawer beside her bed and pulled out the small hadgun she'd sworn she'd never need. Then came the soft sound of metal clicking her front door behind unlocked from the outside. Her pulse thundered. "Who's there?" she whispered. No answer. Just the sound of footsteps slow, deliberate. She aimed toward the door, her voice shaking. "Damon?" Silence. Then the door creaked open... and a man in a black mask stepped into the light. Before she could fire, a flash grenade rolled across the floor. White. Soundless. Gone. When Aurora woke, the air smelled of steel and ozone. Her wrists were bound to a chair, the same kind of cold white room she'd seen in her nightmares the one from the files. And through the glass wall on the other side stood Damon Knight, his expression torn between fury and heartbreak. "Welcome to Projec: ECHO", said a voice from the intercom his father's voice. Damon's throat tightened. "Not like this. I swear to you, Aurora, I didn't know they'd" "Save it", she spat, trembling with rage. "Your family killed my brother. You killed him". The glass flickered, showing Ethan's final test footage again only this time, the system displayed a new label underneath: Subject Reinstated. ECHO transfer successful. Damon looked up, horror-struck. "Reinstated? What the hell" The monitor showed a hearbeat. A living one. Aurora gasped. "That's... Ethan's code signature". "Then that means" Damon began. "He's still alive", she finished, her voice breaking. But before either could move, alarms blared through the facility. The lights dimmed, and a single automated voice echoed through the speakers: "PROJECT: ECHO - PHASE II INITIATED". Damon looked at her through the glass, heart pounding. "Aurora... whatever happens next, don't believe everything you see". The lights cut out. And the experiment began.
