Chapter No 1 A Wolf-less Girl

1075 Words
My name is Alpha Ember and my story didn’t start on the front page. I was born into the Timber Wolf pack, the most powerful pack, ruled by a dominant male line. My destiny was sealed the moment I took my first breath. I was a disappointment from the start. My father had lost his mate during childbirth, and the grief turned him cold, bitter, and resentful. He had expected a boy, the heir to carry on his line. Instead, I was born, a girl, an Alpha-born female in a male-dominant pack. My father’s disappointment carved a permanent chasm between us. I was raised by my mother’s best friend, the mate of Beta Eric, Selena’s father. Sweet, kind-hearted Welma became my mother in every way that mattered. Selena and I grew up like sisters, inseparable, sharing secrets and dreams I never dared share with anyone else. Even as a child, I hadn’t shifted yet. My father worried endlessly about the heir. According to pack laws, only males could inherit the Alpha rank. Everyone knew I was Alpha-born, but without a wolf, I was a mystery, a paradox. "But Alpha, we should worry about this," Beta Eric said cautiously. "I know, but we have to do something," my father replied, distant, cold. "Alpha, if I may," Welma began, her gentle voice carrying weight beyond what it should. "I suggest training Ember to be an Alpha." My father’s eyes narrowed. "Welma, the pack needs a male heir. Females cannot carry the dominant values required of an Alpha," he said sharply. "But Alpha," she started. "Welma, Alpha is right," Beta Eric interrupted firmly. "A female cannot be Alpha. If Ember were a beta’s daughter, she could reach that rank. But for Alpha, impossible." Welma fell silent. I spent my childhood on the sidelines, away from pack politics. Still, my instincts whispered differently. I knew the weight of leadership, the value of running a pack, and the responsibility it demanded. My father never saw that in me. To him, I was a burden, nothing more. Our relationship was toxic, poisoned from the start. Summer arrived, and we spent it in human territory, the area outside pack lands but still under my father’s control. I enjoyed these small freedoms. "Here’s your vanilla ice cream," Selena said, offering me a cone. "You know me too well," I replied with a smile. "Yeah, I’m your best friend. What did you expect?" she teased. I took a spoonful. It melted on my tongue like a little piece of heaven. "So, what are your thoughts on high school?" Selena asked, curious. I exhaled. "You know, the Alpha…" "Don’t worry," she interrupted. "I asked my mother to talk to him." Sometimes I wondered how I would have survived without Selena. She was my anchor. "Okay, I’ll think about it," I said shortly. Around us, wolves from other packs roamed. Rich, arrogant Alphas, the kind I despised. Their only concern was dominance and staking claims over weaker bodies. "Where were you lost?" Selena asked, nudging me. ************ Back at the pack house, my father attended another meeting, as usual. It was his way of avoiding me. Even at home, he pretended to be busy. Not once had he ever made me feel seen, loved, or valued. I sometimes wondered if he had been like this with my mother. According to Welma, he hadn’t. Once, he had been loving, passionate, excited by life and family. Everything changed the day I was born. I entered my room and threw my bag onto the couch. I had lived here since childhood, surrounded by decorations and memories of a happier time. Welma had told me that my father had designed this room before I was even born. Now, he hated it. Hated me. He wanted me gone from his sight. I closed my eyes. Memories flooded in. Two hot tears slipped from the corners of my eyes. I wanted to scream, to release my frustration at him, but the fear of punishment kept me silent. ************ "Look who it is. The goody-goody Alpha that never shifts," Needy sneered, the bully I despised more than anyone. "Hey, freaks. Shut up," Selena shot back. She was always there to protect me. "Go hide behind your beta," Windsor, one of the other bullies, mocked. I clenched my teeth. My eyes glowed golden for a brief second, my inner wolf furious. Selena grabbed my arm. "No, Ember. Don’t," she whispered. "You’ll get in trouble." I exhaled, green eyes returning to normal. Beating them wouldn’t make my father proud. Last time, he had made me bow to every wolf in the pack to teach me respect. Humiliation as discipline. "I want to wipe that smug look off their faces," I muttered. Just then, a ball flew toward me. It almost hit my head, but someone caught it just in time. I looked up. My savior—or so it seemed at first—towered over me, six-foot-two, broad-shouldered, radiating power and danger. Deep brown eyes locked onto mine, cold as steel, carrying a weight that made the air around us feel heavier. Silence fell instantly. The laughter and whispers of the bullies vanished as if devoured by his presence. He didn’t smile. He didn’t even acknowledge the ball. His stare bored into me, sharp, calculating, and almost cruel. I could feel the tension radiating from him like a physical force, pushing me back without touch. My wolf stirred, uneasy. Something about him didn’t feel right. His gaze lingered, studying me, as if deciding whether I was worth his attention or just another annoyance. My heart raced. The intoxicating scent of him filled my senses—dangerous, commanding, addictive—and I hated that it made me shiver. Without a word, he turned sharply and walked away. Each step was deliberate, dominant, a silent warning. The hair on the back of my neck stood on end. Selena’s eyes sparkled with excitement, but I didn’t share her reaction. My gut twisted with unease. Something about him was wrong. His power was undeniable, but so was the darkness behind his gaze. He wasn’t the type of Alpha you could trust, I realized. "What is it?" I asked, puzzled. "You don’t know him? Seriously?" she said, disappointed. I rolled my eyes. "He is Alpha Nathan. You should have known this," she said eagerly. "And who is Alpha Nathan?" I asked, shrugging. Selena’s expression turned deadly serious. "You’ll see, soon."
