ChapterOne
Jane's POV. I was officially 17 and I knew I'd be getting my mate soon; I was beyond excited for this day to come. Although I was an omega, the lowest of the chain in any wolf pack, I didn't let that bother me. I always helped out and it wasn’t like I had a choice. My parents passed as I was a pup so I really didn't have anyone to teach me how to wolf. Which meant transformation also came really late for me compared to the rest of my pack so I wasn't really considered a worthy member. I was bullied and teased for it a lot, especially in school. And it wasn’t like I didn’t look good—I knew I was pretty. In my human form I looked a lot like my mum, my eyes were similar to the color of the ocean, I had little freckles on my cheeks, a small nose and full lips. My auburn hair fell just above my waist and my fair skin was smooth and creamy. I had a slender build and I wasn’t quite tall as I stood at the height of 5 foot 5. I hoped the day would favor me and be different for once as I prepared for school. Getting inside the school building and I was instantly welcomed by my best friend Anna, she was one of the people who fought and stood by me. Her presence made the bullying reduce significantly because they were really scared of her and what her family could do. "Happy Birthday!” She said while embracing me in a tight hug, “I got you something.” I couldn't help but giggle at her eagerness, she was more excited than I was for my own birthday. I opened the bag and inside it was a locket. "Thank you, Annie. I love it!” I exclaimed honestly and pulled her into another hug. “Anytime, Jay. So are you excited about finding your mate?” She inquired and wiggled her eyebrows as we began walking through the slightly packed hallways. "I’m having mixed feelings. On one hand I’m happy, but on the other I’m totally freaking out." I truly was scared at the prospect of finding out who my mate was. What if it was someone who had bullied me before? Someone I despised? How would I learn to love them? “Don't worry your pretty little head about it. It’ll all go well, I just know it.” Anna grinned at me and I couldn’t help but reciprocate. "Thank you,” I replied before staring down intently at the locket. It was beautiful. “Why did you leave the house early today though?” I asked her while narrowing my eyes. "Ohh, no reason.” Anna looked elsewhere and bit her inner cheek which meant she wasn’t being truthful here. "I know you're lying, I don’t really know why but I'll find out soon.” The bell rang to signal the beginning of the first period and I mentally groaned. We had history and I felt my mood dampen. My day was starting with the subject I hated the most. History wasn’t so bad, but the teacher was old and no fun, he was always grumpy. Anna unfortunately wasn’t here to keep me company so I did what I usually do in this class, I doodled in my book as a way to pass the time. History was finally over and I dashed out of the classroom, the next subject for the day was math. I really sucked at it and I refused to believe it was my fault. My brain just couldn't be available during the lectures. I was shaken from my sleep and heard a few snickers. The math teacher looked at me with a frown before holding out his marker, ordering me to come solve the equation on the board and by the end of the lesson, I had succeeded in making a huge mockery of myself. My heart leaped in joy when the bell rang and I slipped out of the class so the math teacher wouldn’t try to talk to me about my “bad behavior”. I dragged my legs on the floor as I was making my way to the locker room to change into my PE attire. It was pretty obvious to me that the universe hated me. Today was meant to be my birthday, a day I could relax but I'm stuck doing the subjects I hated so much, with teachers who didn’t care about their students and schoolmates who looked down on me. I got to the basketball court where we usually had our PE classes and I was made to run laps because I waslate. It wasn’t my fault my sportswear was stolen from my locker so I had to borrow the spare I kept in Anna’s locker. Coach of course didn’t care. Typical. As a wolf it should be expected to love running or any blood-pumping exercises but like I pointed out, I didn’t know how to wolf yet and I also haven't gotten a proper training like the rest of my pack. It also didn’t help that I was also a very slow learner. After running my laps, we started playing dodge ball and before I knew it, a ball slammed right into my face. I fell on my back groaned. I knew my nose was broken based on the crunch sound I heard during the collision. It did hurt but at the very least, I now had an excuse to leave PE—at the cost of my nose. Coach reprimanded the girls who conspired to hit me with the ball and told me to head to the nurse’s office which I gladly obliged to. I was given an ice-pack which helped with the pain a little. Lunch time rolled around after I had spent the rest of PE period in there. I spotted my best friend and joined her in the lunch line before we made our way to sit down at the table a bit farther from the center of the cafeteria. Anna had already found her mate, Pete. He was a nice guy for the most part; the weird part was that they hated each other before finding out they were mates. We've all known each other since we were little, she disliked him because he was one of the bullies I had back then. Of course, Anna had to knock some sense into him and he apologized and made up for every mean thing he did to me. Two of our other friends, Eva and Charles came to sit with us. “Hey there birthday girl, how’s your day going?” Charles asked as he sat down beside Pete before giving him a fist bump. "Oh, my day’s been going terrific! I love getting a broken nose, especially on my birthday. And I'm so glad I got to attend my favorite class, history, and also make a total fool of myself in math. I mean, who doesn't love a good embarrassment? And PE itself was just the cherry on top!” Charles, noticing my distress, tried to make me feel better. "Hey, don't worry, It's just a bad day, but it'll get better.” Eva chimed in, "Yeah, it will and ohh I finally watched, Far From Home! Personally, it wasn’t that good. But you guys shouldn’t come at me. I mean, it was so overrated and didn’t even live up to its expectations.” Everyone of us around the table gasped in unison. “How dare you even say that?!" Anna smacked her lips, "It's a freaking classic, Ev. You have to love it!" “I agree, why would you even say it was overrated? How are you even just watching it?” I asked with a raised brow. I knew anyone could have their own opinions on things but a Far From Home slander? I wouldn’t take that. “Well it isn’t really my type of movie.” Eva shrugged her shoulders and we all shook our heads at her. Charles rolled his eyes before shoving a piece of apple in his mouth. “Of course it wasn’t.” Just then, the bell rang, signaling the end of lunch. "Well, I guess it’s time to face the music. I’ll see you guys in later, if this school doesn’t kill me first.” I said with a sigh, gathering my things. My friends laughed at my overdramatized words, and we all headed off to our next class. As I walked down the hallways, I silently hoped that the rest of the day would go by smoothly and without any hitches. After a long and stressful day at school, it was finally time for me to make my way back home. I felt sore all over and it was literally just the first day of school for the week. Anna had left earlier, claiming she had something important to do. She had been acting weird throughout the day and I knew she's up to something, what it was though, I had no idea. I began walking home, I liked looking around as I made my way down the sidewalk. My mind began flitting to my late parents and life without them so far. Since their passing, I was tossed from house to house, abused and treated like dirt. My parents were very powerful people and shifters. They were both Delta wolves and they died trying to protect me because I had left the house at the time. If it wasn’t for my parents, I would have been killed and that didn’t really sound like a bad thing right about now because at the cost of my life—my parents were taken from me. Apparently, it was an ambush to lure my parents and it worked as I was used as a pawn. Anna's parents however were generous enough to adopt me and I'll be forever indebted to them. They made it clear countless times how I didn’t owe them anything but I felt like I could at least do something nice for them someday and I will. My eyes drifted up to the house I now called home and I made my way inside only to be shocked at what I was seeing. The house was filled with a handful of people from school, who I was either acquainted with or good friends with. "Happy birthday Jane,” Anne squealed. “I knew you didn't want anything extra but I just couldn’t control myself.” she said. I wiped the tears already falling from my eyes and pulled her in for a hug. Her parents walked towards us and joined in on the hug, wishing me a happy birthday. “Thank you guys. I can't begin to explain how much this all means to me.” I replied with as much appreciation I could muster. Anna’s parents told me it was no problem and then shooed me to go upstairs and freshen up. I had changed into something more comfortable and birthday party-appropriate. When I made my way downstairs, I had bumped into someone. He turned around to apologize and when our eyes met, I knew I had found my mate.
