Secrets are safe
Udaipur, Rajasthan – Night Time Grand Palace The palace was as magnificent as its name — and so was the servants’ wing. The living quarters for the staff were beautiful, far better than an average home. In the last room of that wing, a woman around 40 or 45 sat on her bed, speaking softly on the phone. A gentle smile played on her lips as she said lovingly — “Beta, I’ve been waiting for you for so long. Now that you’ve completed your graduation, I think you should come here once. Our master owns huge companies, famous all around the world. You could work in one of them. Anyway, you’re 22 now — you’ll easily find a good job.” A calm voice answered from the other side, “Mom, don’t worry. The moment I receive my degree, I’ll come there.” The woman’s smile deepened. Her voice was warm with love — “I’m just waiting for you, my child. I’m so proud that my daughter topped her university! Tomorrow I’ll distribute sweets to everyone here.” The girl chuckled softly, “Mom, don’t be so quick to celebrate. The day I stand on my own feet and hand you my first salary — that’s when you should be proud.” The woman’s eyes turned moist, but her voice was full of pride — “Beta, you’ve always made me proud. Even though I work here as a maid in this grand palace, you’re building a name of your own — that’s my biggest happiness. You’re doing what I never could.” After chatting for a while longer, she ended the call. Lying down on her bed, she smiled to herself and whispered, “Just two more days… and my daughter will be here. I’ll see her after five long years.” Five years ago, when she had come to work at this palace, she had sent her daughter to Mumbai for her studies. Now she was finally returning. The thought brought peace to her face, and she drifted into a contented sleep. --- The Next Morning The next morning, the woman — Sunita — was distributing sweets to the palace staff, a wide smile on her face. Everyone congratulated her warmly, and she thanked them all, glowing with happiness. Holding the sweet box, she then walked toward the luxurious inner halls of the palace. As she entered the grand living area, she saw an elderly man sitting on a sofa, reading through some files. His presence was powerful — stern yet commanding. Beside him sat a younger man, probably his son, with the same serious expression. Sunita smiled respectfully and approached them. Bowing slightly, she said, “Bade Malik, I’ve brought sweets for everyone.” The old man looked up in mild surprise. “Sweets? What’s the occasion, Sunita? Something special?” Sunita smiled brightly. “Yes, Bade Malik. My daughter — the one I’ve told you about — has topped her university! And she’ll be coming here in two days.” Both men smiled. The younger one said warmly, “That’s wonderful news! We must celebrate. Your daughter has made you proud.” The elder man nodded approvingly. “Congratulations, Sunita. You work so hard here and still manage to support your daughter’s education in the city. And now she’s made a name for herself — that’s something everyone should learn from.” But as he said this, his expression suddenly shifted — his smile faded. Sunita sensed it but stayed quiet. At that very moment, a sharp female voice broke the silence from near the temple area — “Oh, not again! Early in the morning you’ve started complaining. He’s still young — only 17! And even then, he works so hard. If he doesn’t top his class yet, how is that his fault?” The younger man sighed, irritation clear in his tone. “Please don’t defend him, Arushi. When he spends all day playing video games and car racing, when will he study? And when I try to talk to him, he ignores me — like we’re his servants and he’s the master!” The woman, Arushi, folded her arms proudly. “Of course, he behaves like that! He’s the only heir of the Maheshwari empire — the light of this family! It’s only natural for him to have a bit of pride.” The three — the old man, Hitesh, and Sunita — just looked at her silently. Then Arushi turned to Sunita and asked sharply, “When is your daughter coming, Sunita?” “Just two days more, Madam,” Sunita replied politely. Arushi seemed to think for a moment, then said, “If your daughter topped her university, she must be good at studies, right?” Sunita nodded eagerly. “Yes, Madam. She’s excellent! She even tutors younger students in her free time.” Arushi’s eyes lit up. She turned to her husband and father-in-law. “Hitesh, I was just thinking — since Sunita’s daughter is coming here and she’s such a good teacher, why don’t we hire her as a tutor for our son? Maybe she can help him improve his grades. You know he refuses to attend coaching classes or listen to anyone else. Maybe if someone teaches him at home, he’ll finally start focusing.” Sunita’s face brightened. “Madam, that would be a blessing for me! I’d be honored if my daughter got to teach your son — the heir of this house. I’ll make sure she gives her best.” Before she could finish, Hitesh frowned. “Arushi, what are you saying? Do you really think Sunita’s daughter can handle that spoiled boy of yours? You know how he is — short-tempered, stubborn, and impossible to control. I doubt this will work.” Arushi pouted but said nothing. Then the old man spoke calmly, “Hitesh, I think Arushi’s suggestion makes sense. Our Vyansh doesn’t talk to outsiders, but if someone from within the house starts teaching him, maybe he’ll open up… and his studies might improve too.” Hitesh sighed. “All right, Dad. If you all think this could help him, then fine — let’s give it a try.” Arushi smiled victoriously and turned to Sunita. “So, Sunita, your daughter is coming in two days?” “Yes, Madam! As soon as she collects her degree, she’ll be here,” Sunita replied excitedly. “Good,” Arushi said with a nod. “When she arrives, send her to the palace. We’ll talk to her.” She turned to leave, adding casually, “Now go see if Vyansh is awake. He has to get to school.” Sunita quickly nodded and walked upstairs toward the top floor — the only area occupied by one person. Standing before the large carved door, she sighed softly and whispered, “I just hope my daughter can handle you, Vyansh baba… Maybe if she succeeds, you’ll change for the better — and perhaps your family will offer her a good job. That would change her life forever.” She took a breath and opened the door. “Vyansh beta, it’s time for school. Are you still sleeping?” The room was grand — filled with trophies and medals from various competitions. In the center stood a large round black bed. Someone lay there, still asleep, one arm dangling off the side, sunlight glinting across it. Sunita walked closer, gently pulled up the blanket, and said softly, “Chhote Malik, the Madam has sent me to wake you. Please get up — or you’ll be late for school.” As she reached to pull away the blanket, a sleepy hand suddenly grabbed her wrist. A drowsy voice murmured, “Please, aunty… let me sleep a little longer. I’m not going to school today.” Sunita chuckled, “Vyansh beta, you’re already 17 — and your 18th birthday is just two months away! But you still behave like a five-year-old refusing to wake up.” Then she added more firmly, “You’d better get up, or your father will be very angry.” From under the blanket came a groggy, annoyed voice — “I don’t care what anyone says… I just want to sleep. That’s it.” Sunita sighed. Then, with a mischievous smile, she said, “Hmm… maybe I should tell everyone you went car racing again last night?” In an instant, the blanket flew off. There he was — Vyansh Maheshwari, the 17-year-old heir. A strikingly handsome teenager with deep brown eyes glowing in the morning light. His brows were furrowed, lips pressed together, and his messy hair fell over his forehead — giving him a careless, almost divine charm. He glared at her, his voice firm — “Aunty, you’re the only one in this palace I actually trust. If you start blackmailing me too, I promise — I’ll never share anything with you again.” Sunita couldn’t help but laugh. “Oh, come on, beta! I was just trying to wake you up. Don’t worry — your secrets are safe with me. No one will ever know.”
