ALINA
The trek to outer San Francisco took most of the day and the Alpha meeting was this evening. Rex and I left the pack in the hands of Andy and Rachel with the promise my dad would help out where he was needed. He insisted on helping with warrior training and beach clean up. This meeting was typically only for Alphas while the Betas had their own meeting in the next room, but Rex insisted I had come and he was right. Hunter agreed regarding his mate, Lily. Leading up to the meeting, my dad was spending time with Hunter teaching him about how he ran Ocean Wood. Hunter wanted to learn more about how the she-wolves were treated and wanted to implement a similar approach with Red Woods Pack. Rex was really proud of how he stepped up.
“So how formal is this thing?” I asked from the bathroom.
“Not at all actually. You don’t need to wear a dress if that’s what you’re asking.” Rex called out from the bedroom of our hotel suite.
I set down my hairbrush and poked my head out, “How did you know?”
“I saw you pack a dress with a frown.” He chuckled. “Come on, it’s about to start.”
I had decided on dark jeans with a gray blouse and my converses. With one last look at the sword that rested on the dresser, I followed Rex down to the conference rooms. The Betas were filing into one room and we filed into another. Around the table sat less than ten Alphas who dressed similarly to Rex, jeans and dress shirts. All looked pretty standard for Alphas, large builds with an ego to match. All except for Rex who always looked unbelievably handsome. Some of them stiffened at my sight as we sat at the head of the table.
“Alpha Rex, this meeting is for Alphas, not for Luna ears.” One of the Alphas growled.
Kiiya bristled threatening to come forward. I saw Levi first. “She stays.” Rex snapped. “Anybody got a problem?”
The Alpha huffed but lowered his eyes. I patted Rex’s hand under the table pushing Levi back. “Perhaps, you would like to introduce her then.” Another suggested.
Rex nodded to me mind-linking, “You don’t need me to introduce exactly who you are.”
I straightened. “Alina Heartsbane of Ocean Wood.”
Kiiya puffed out her chest as gasps went around the room. One Alpha did not react or at least tried not to and it was the same one who challenged Rex.
“That’s what I expected.” Rex muttered to me. He turned to the Alphas. “Yes, my Luna is Alina Heartsbane. As some of you have heard, we took Ocean Wood back from the rogues that stole it and killed her family. Red Woods has nearly doubled in size because of it and we have exciting changes coming.”
I continued to listen to Rex talk as I looked around the room in more detail noticing Nick in the back. He must’ve taken over the Alpha position in Pacific South. Nick nodded to me and gave a small smile. At least we had one ally here.
“With that, I’ll leave it to my Luna.” Rex finished his speech while I wasn’t paying attention. “Alina.”
I remembered what we talked about in the car ride. I straightened my posture and cleared my throat, “Right. We have reason to believe Lucas is mounting an attack against our pack. After we learned of Alpha Maddox’s betrayal, we invaded and rescued my home, killing Maddox in the process.” Glances were stolen in Nick’s direction. His face remained unmoved, actually looked bored of this meeting. “Lucas was banished from Pacific South, but he was still Maddox’s brother, so it’s likely he will come after us.”
We had to embellish the story a little because of the sword, but still truthful. One of the Alphas near Nick sat forward in his seat and looked directly at Rex. He kind of reminded me of Hunter, pale with bright red hair. “Alpha Maddox was a powerful Alpha. I’m impressed you were able to kill him being a young Alpha yourself, Rex.”
Kiiya growled. “He didn’t.”
Before I could continue, Nick finally opened his mouth. “She did.”
