ROBERT My head screamed. My body felt heavy. Everything ached from head to toe. I could hardly move and my throat was so dry, I could barely open my mouth. I struggled to open my eyes just to see I was alone in what looked like the pack infirmary. A blanket covered most of my body and I noticed I was wrapped in bandages and had an IV in my arm. I remember little, but I know I had escaped and somehow managed to survive long enough to get to Red Woods. I was alone, but I heard voices outside. I turned my head to peer through the window in the door. “He was severely dehydrated and starved. He has scars everywhere and he lost a lot of blood. We’re lucky we didn’t lose him. It looks like he was tortured.” I could hear the pack doctor say quietly. “Tortured?” Rex murmured. “By who?” “That is the million dollar question, Alpha. My guess is whoever held him captive for so long. He’s lucky to be alive.” “Did you run the test? Is he actually my father?” I heard Alina ask. She looked strong, confident even. Her hair had grown long and her skin was still tan liked she had spent more time on the beach than under the trees. She had a sheath strapped to her back with a sword secured inside. “Yes, Luna. That man in there is indeed Robert Heartsbane.” The pack doctor gave a small smile and I heard Alina give a sigh of relief. I watched Rex squeeze her shoulder. “He needs rest, but he’ll be just fine. Call me if you need anything.” The pack doctor turned and left. I watched Alina collapse into Rex’s arms. “Alina..” Rex whispered, “He’s awake.” Alina turned and came into the room quietly. ALINA My dad looked like how I remembered, with the dark hair like mine and tan skin from years in the sun. He had bright blue eyes, but they looked sad and tired. I sat in the chair next to the bed and grabbed his hand, “Dad..how are you alive?” “Let’s not worry about that, right now. I’m just glad you made it home.” He patted my hand. “No..Dad. Tell me what happened. How did you survive?” He glanced over at Rex who hovered near the foot of the bed. Rex gave a slight nod telling my dad it was okay. “They tortured me for years. They kept me around as they chased you up and down the West Coast. They couldn’t find you, so they tortured me hoping I would give you up.” He began quietly. His throat was catching. I grabbed the water cup and eased the straw into his mouth. He took a few sips before I pulled it away. “Ocean Wood was betrayed. Alpha Maddox was our friend and I trusted him with our secret. He betrayed us. To his brother.” “Lucas is alive?” Rex raised his brows in shock. “I thought Lucas was banished from Pacific South for his extremism.” I replied. “I didn’t think he’d live.” “It was a front.” Dad argued. “It was a front to fool us and I believed it.” Tears streamed down his face. “I trusted Maddox and he betrayed us!” He shouted. Dad was retched with sobs. I haven’t seen my dad in years. I have no idea how to handle his emotions. I did the only thing I thought of doing. I removed the sword sheath from my back and placed it on his chest. “Maddox is gone. The rogues. His pack members who betrayed us. They’re all gone. I killed Maddox. I destroyed every last one of them. We’re safe.” His breathing slowed and the crying stopped. His hand slowly wrapped around the hilt. He gripped it with all the strength he had left in him. “It’s not over. Lucas will be furious that I escaped. He’s going to come after you.” “I’d like to see him try.” I growled. “No, you don’t understand. There’s something you don’t know.” Dad murmured. “The meteor that crashed on our beach, the same one that made the Heartsbane dagger..it’s still there, deep in the earth.”
