“Anyone out here with you? You been alone all this time?”
“Yup.” Carter shrugged. “Just me. Ain’t seen hide nor hair of anyone since. Til now, anyways.” He stood when he’d finished his fish.
Benson watched him closely, especially when he moved. He moves quick, deliberate. Do I have something to be concerned about with this hermit? Five years out here alone will do some damage to your sanity.
“Which way you goin’?” Carter said.
“The plan was to follow the river up. That won’t cause you trouble, will it?”
“Which side of the river?”
“The other side. Why?” Benson had crossed the river to take cover, as the trees on the other side were few and far between.
“Easier way up on this side. You can do as you please, but this side is easier for the next couple plateaus.”
