Family Ties

Liam's powers grew stronger with each passing day. It started with small things, objects rattling on tables when he walked by, doors swinging open without anyone touching them. Then it progressed to bigger displays of power. He lifted chairs without touching them, his small face scrunched in concentration. He moved with unnatural speed during play, appearing at one end of the yard and then suddenly at the other. I watched him carefully one afternoon as he accidentally levitated a small rock, his eyes wide with wonder and excitement. The stone hovered in the air between his palms, spinning gently in the afternoon sunlight. "Look what I did!" he said excitedly, his voice high with childish joy. "Mom, look! I made it float!" I smiled, my heart swelling with love for this incredible boy. But I felt a pang of worry deep in my chest. The Gift was manifesting in him so quickly, so powerfully. I remembered the elder's warnings about the cost of power, the danger of losing oneself to the shadow. "That is the family Gift, sweetheart," I said gently, kneeling beside him. "It is powerful, but you must learn to control it. Just like I am learning. We have to be careful, okay? The power inside you is special, but it can be dangerous if we do not respect it." He nodded solemnly, his small face serious. "I will be careful, Mom. I promise." Asher and Lucas were both there, standing a few feet away. For the first time, they worked together as co-parents, their earlier hostility set aside for the sake of the boy. Asher knelt on one side of Liam, showing him how to breathe and focus. "Take a deep breath, son," he said, his voice calm and steady. "Feel the power inside you, but don't grab at it. Let it flow through you like water. You are the riverbank. The power is the river. You guide it, but you do not fight it." Lucas knelt on the other side, his voice gentle. "Your great-grandmother could move mountains with this Gift," he said, his eyes warm. "She was the strongest wolf of her generation. But she was also the kindest. She never used her power to hurt anyone. That is what made her great. Not the power itself, but how she used it." Liam looked between them, his eyes bright with understanding. "So I have to be strong and kind?" "Exactly," I said, my voice thick with emotion. "That is exactly right, sweetheart." "You are doing great, kid," Lucas said gently, his hand resting on Liam's shoulder. "We are all here to help you. Your mother, me, Asher. We are a team now. All of us." The moment felt heartfelt, almost sacred. The three of us sat with Liam in the garden, talking about his new abilities. We answered his questions, calmed his fears, celebrated his triumphs. It was the first time we truly began co-parenting effectively, putting aside our own issues for the sake of this incredible child. Liam was the bridge between us, the common ground we all shared. He was the reason we were learning to heal. Later that evening, as the sun set and painted the sky in shades of gold and pink, Asher and Lucas had a rare honest conversation while I listened nearby. They sat on the balcony of the main hall, their voices low but clear. "I hated you for years," Asher admitted, his voice rough with emotion. "For what you did to Soren. For the pain you caused her. I wanted to tear you apart every time I saw your face." Lucas nodded slowly, his eyes fixed on the horizon. "I deserved that hate. I was selfish and broken. I made terrible choices, and I hurt the woman I loved more than anyone in the world. I regret it every single day. There is not a morning that I wake up without thinking about what I threw away." They talked about the past. The family conflicts that had torn them apart. The mistakes that had led to so much pain. The misunderstandings that had festered for years. For the first time, real understanding began to form between them. It was not forgiveness, not yet. But it was a beginning. A crack in the wall of resentment that had separated them for so long. "I can see how much you love her," Asher said quietly. "And I can see how much you love Liam. That is why I am willing to try. For them." Lucas turned to look at him, his eyes glistening. "That is all I ask. A chance to be part of their lives. To be the father Liam deserves." Soren felt torn but hopeful watching them. The healing was slow but real. The lines that had divided them were blurring, softening. It was not perfect. There were still moments of tension, of old wounds aching. But they were trying. All of them. For the first time in years, she allowed herself to believe that this strange, complicated family might actually work. The chapter ended with a direct message from the immortal faction. The parchment arrived by raven, its seal glowing with a faint, otherworldly light. The words were cold and precise, demanding Soren surrender the Gift or face consequences. The message was a threat wrapped in diplomatic language, an ultimatum that left no room for negotiation. The external pressure was growing stronger. The Eternal Legion was not going away. They would keep coming, keep demanding, keep hunting. But as she looked at the men who loved her, at the son who was learning to control his power, Soren felt something she had not felt in a long time. Determination. She would not surrender the Gift. She would not let them take her family. She would fight, with everything she had. The shadow inside her would not consume her. It would be her weapon. Her shield. Her strength.
