The Life She Built
The lights above the operating table burned like judgment. My patient was slipping away right in front of me. A twelve year old boy with a failing heart. One mistake and he would die on my table. “Pressure is crashing,” my assistant said. I did not look up. “I see it. Give me more suction. Now.” My hands moved fast and sure. I had done this before but never with the stakes feeling this personal. Beeps from the monitors filled the room like warning bells. Sweat rolled down my neck under the surgical cap. For fifteen long minutes I fought death with every tool and trick I knew. Then the rhythm changed. Stronger. Steady. Alive. I stepped back and let out a long breath. “We have him.” Cheers erupted around the room. Someone clapped me on the back. The head nurse smiled wide. “Another miracle Doctor Frost.” I peeled off my gloves and mask feeling the exhaustion hit me all at once. The team wheeled the boy out to recovery while I scrubbed out. When I stepped into the hallway the staff treated me like a rock star. Doctors nodded with respect. Nurses congratulated me. “Great work Doctor Frost,” one resident said. “The parents are crying happy tears out there.” I managed a tired smile. “Tell them he needs quiet rest. I will check on him in an hour.” This was my life now. Five years of hard work had built it. No pack drama. No broken promises. Just me saving lives and going home to peace. I walked toward the locker room ready for a hot shower and a strong cup of coffee. “Aria.” The voice stopped me dead in my tracks. I turned slowly. Lucas Blackthorn stood there looking wrecked. His clothes were wrinkled and his eyes were red. The powerful Alpha I once loved looked like he had not slept in days. “What are you doing here Lucas?” I asked. My voice came out colder than I planned. He took a step closer. “I need your help. Our son is dying.” The words hit me like ice water. I had not heard from him in five years. Not since the night he destroyed everything between us. “I have nothing to say to you,” I said and started walking away. He moved fast and blocked my path. “Please. He has the same heart problem you just fixed. The doctors back home say it is worse. They cannot handle it. You are his only chance Aria.” I stared at him. Really looked. The regret in his eyes was real but it did not erase the past. “You do not get to walk back into my life after five years and ask for anything,” I said. “I left that world behind.” Lucas ran a hand through his hair. “I know I messed up bad. But this is not about us. Our boy is only four. He is struggling to breathe. His lips turn blue when he tries to play. Please look at his files at least.” Hospital staff were starting to glance our way. I grabbed his arm and pulled him into an empty exam room. The door shut with a soft click. “How did you find me?” I asked crossing my arms. “Your name is everywhere now. The miracle heart surgeon. When they told me how bad Liam was I drove straight here without stopping.” I leaned against the counter. “Why should I believe you?” He pulled out his phone and showed me recent pictures. A small boy with my eyes and Lucas’s dark hair. He looked pale and fragile. My chest tightened. “That is our son,” Lucas said quietly. “He asks about his mom sometimes. I never knew how to answer him.” I looked away. The pain from five years ago rushed back fresh. “You should go Lucas. I have patients to check on.” He stepped closer. “I was wrong Aria. That night on our anniversary I chose wrong. I should have been with you instead of her.” “Do not talk about that night,” I warned. My hands started shaking so I shoved them in my pockets. Lucas kept going. “She needed comfort after losing my brother. I thought I was doing the right thing for the pack. But I lost you. And now I might lose our son too.” I met his eyes. “You made your choice back then. I made mine when I left.” He reached out and gently grabbed my wrist. His touch felt familiar and strange at the same time. “He is dying Aria. Only you can save him. Please.” I yanked my hand away hard. “Do not touch me.” The look in his eyes was pure desperation. It told me this was only the beginning. He was not going to walk away easily. “I need time to think,” I said finally. “Send me the medical records. I will look at them tonight.” Lucas nodded quickly. “Thank you. I will send them right now. Whatever you need I will get it.” I opened the door. “This does not mean we are okay Lucas. Stay out of my way after this.” He paused in the doorway. “You look different. Stronger. I am proud of what you built here even if it kills me that I am not part of it.” I did not answer. I watched him walk down the hallway until he disappeared around the corner. Then I leaned against the wall trying to catch my breath. Five years. I had rebuilt everything. My career. My confidence. My new home with the Iron Fangs. Now Lucas was back with a dying child and years of guilt in his eyes. I pulled out my phone and saw the files had already arrived. The scans were bad. Worse than I expected for such a young wolf. The left side of the heart was underdeveloped. There were multiple defects and his body was fighting itself. My mind started planning the surgery even while my heart screamed at me to run the other way. This boy was mine. My blood. My responsibility. I walked to the recovery room to check on my earlier patient. The boy was stable and his parents thanked me with tears. Their joy should have felt good but my mind was somewhere else. Later that evening I sat in my office reviewing Liam’s files again. The door opened and one of the nurses poked her head in. “Doctor Frost you have another visitor. He says it is urgent.” I closed the files. “Send him in.” I already knew who it would be. Lucas stepped inside looking a little more put together but still desperate. “Did you look at them?” he asked right away. I nodded. “It is serious. The combination of defects is rare. His werewolf healing is making scar tissue faster than normal.” Lucas sat down across from me. “Can you fix it?” “I can try. But it will be long and dangerous. He might not make it through the operation.” He leaned forward. “I trust you Aria. You are the best. Our son needs his mother right now.” “Do not call me that,” I said sharply. “I left that life.” Lucas sighed. “I know. But he is still your son. He has your eyes and your stubborn streak.” Those words hit me hard. I stood up and walked to the window. The city lights stretched out below us. “I will do the surgery,” I said after a long pause. “But I have conditions. You stay out of my personal life. This is medical only.” Lucas stood up too. “Whatever you want. Just save him.” He stepped closer. “Seeing you again like this… it brings everything back.” I turned to face him. “Stop. My life is different now. I have people who care about me.” He looked like he wanted to ask more but stopped himself. “I understand. Thank you for doing this.” I watched him leave again. My wrist still felt warm where he had grabbed it earlier. The look in his eyes stayed with me. Desperate. Regretful. Determined. This was only the beginning. My past had crashed into my present and a small boy was fighting for his life because of it. I touched the spot on my wrist and wondered how I was going to explain any of this to Asher. The hospital felt smaller suddenly. My carefully built world was starting to crack. And I had no choice but to face what came next.
