Aftermath and accusations

The last stitch was done and Liam’s heart held steady on the monitor. I stepped back from the table feeling like I might collapse. My son was alive but still in critical condition. “He made it through,” I told the team. My voice cracked with exhaustion. “Keep him monitored every fifteen minutes. No mistakes.” The nurses moved quickly around Liam’s small body. I walked out of the operating room on shaky legs. The hallway lights felt too bright after so many hours under the surgical lamps. Lucas rushed toward me first. His face was pale and full of emotion. “Soren is he really okay? Tell me the truth please.” “He survived the surgery,” I said. “But the next twenty four hours are the most dangerous. We have to watch for complications.” Lucas grabbed my hands tightly. “You saved him. I knew only you could do it. You are incredible.” I gently pulled my hands away. “It was a team effort Lucas. He is still fighting.” Asher stood a few feet away watching us. His jaw was clenched tight and his eyes burned with jealousy. He stepped forward and wrapped a strong arm around my waist pulling me against him. “You were unbelievable in there,” Asher said softly. “I am so proud of you love.” Lucas glared at him. “Of course she was unbelievable. She just saved our son.” Asher’s grip tightened on me. “She is not your anything anymore. She wears my ring now.” I stepped between them quickly. “Both of you stop this right now. Liam needs calm around him. This is not about your egos.” Lucas ignored Asher and looked at me with soft eyes. “Can I sit with him? Just for a little while? I need to see my boy.” I nodded. “Ten minutes maximum. He needs complete rest.” We walked into the recovery room together. Liam looked tiny hooked up to all the machines. His breathing was shallow but steady. I adjusted one of the tubes carefully. “He has your eyes,” Lucas whispered. “Even now I see you in him Soren.” I kept my focus on the monitors. “Do not start that Lucas. Not today.” He moved closer anyway. “Why not? We made him together. Remember that night we spent at the lake cabin? We were so happy back then.” Asher stood in the doorway listening. His voice came out sharp. “She remembers how you left her alone on your anniversary. Do not rewrite history.” Lucas turned to face him. “You know nothing about what we had uncle. You ran away from the family years ago. You do not get to judge me.” Asher stepped fully into the room. “I ran because your father was poison. The same blood that runs in your veins. And now you want to drag Soren back into that mess.” I held up my hand. “Enough. Liam is right here. Show some respect.” Liam stirred slightly in his sleep. We all went quiet for a moment. “He is waking up a bit,” I said moving to his side. “Liam sweetheart can you hear me?” The boy’s eyes fluttered open. “Mom? It hurts a little.” My heart squeezed tight. “I know baby. But you were so brave. The surgery went well. You are going to get stronger now.” Lucas knelt beside the bed. “Hey champ. Daddy is here too. We are both so proud of you.” Liam looked between us with tired eyes. “You both stayed for me?” I brushed hair from his forehead. “We did. Now you need to rest and heal okay?” Asher watched everything from the corner. His jealousy was clear in the way his fists clenched at his sides. After a few minutes he spoke up. “Soren you need to rest too,” he said. “You have been going nonstop. Let me take you to get some air.” Lucas stood up. “I can stay with him if you need a break.” “No,” I said firmly. “I will monitor him tonight. Both of you go get some coffee or something.” They left the room but came back ten minutes later. Lucas started again. “Seeing you with him tonight,” he said quietly. “It reminded me of everything we lost Soren. I have changed. I want to be the man you deserve. For Liam and for you.” Asher’s voice turned cold. “She has already chosen. Stop trying to guilt her.” Lucas looked at me. “Is that true? You really want a life with my uncle after everything?” I met his eyes. “I want a life with someone who makes me feel safe and loved every day. Asher does that. You never did.” The tension in the room grew thick. Asher pulled me aside into the small side room. “I need to know how you really feel about this family connection,” he said. His voice was low. “It is eating me up Soren.” I touched his arm. “It shocked me at first. But you are not your family Asher. You are the man who stood by me when I had nothing. That is what matters.” He searched my eyes. “I should have told you sooner. When I realized who you were I was already in love with you. I was scared of losing you.” “I know,” I said. “We will figure this out together. I promise.” A nurse knocked and entered with new test results. “Doctor Frost you need to see this. Liam’s blood work shows something unusual.” I took the paper and studied it. “This is not normal. There is an extra marker in his bloodline. Something ancient.” Asher leaned in. “What does that mean exactly?” “It means the family has a hidden trait,” I explained. “It might explain why his condition was so severe. Lucas needs to see this.” I called Lucas back in. He looked at the results carefully. “My father used to talk about the Shadow Gift in our blood,” he said. “I thought it was just old stories. Some kind of power or curse.” Asher crossed his arms. “So the family secret is coming out at the perfect time. How convenient.” Lucas shot him a look. “This could help Liam heal faster. Soren can you use this information?” “I can adjust his treatment,” I said. “But it also brings new risks we did not know about.” We talked for several minutes about the next steps. The conversation felt strangely calm for once. Then Lucas turned to me again. “I still love you Soren,” he said softly. “Watching you fight for our son today proved it. I would do anything to win you back.” Asher stepped forward. “She is mine Lucas. Accept it.” Before things could explode a nurse rushed in looking scared. “Doctor Frost someone left this note at the front desk for you. It was marked urgent.” I opened the folded paper. The words were written in bold black ink. “You saved the boy but your luck is running out. Next time it will be you on the table. Watch your back.” I dropped the note. Cold fear ran through me. Asher picked it up and read it. “This is a direct threat against you Soren.” Lucas grabbed the note next. “Who the hell sent this? I will tear them apart.” I stared at both men. “Someone does not want me here. Whether it is because of the surgery or something bigger.” Asher pulled me into his arms. “No one is touching you. I swear on my life.” Lucas met my eyes. “We will protect you Soren. Both of us. For Liam’s sake.” The room felt heavy with new danger. Liam slept peacefully nearby but a fresh threat hung over all of us. Someone wanted me gone and they were done playing games. I looked at the two Alphas standing on either side of me. My past and my future. The family secret was only starting to unravel and now my own life was on the line too.
