Betrayal from Within

Morning light filtered through the windows as I stood beside Liam’s bed checking his vitals. My body ached from exhaustion but my heart felt lighter seeing my son breathing steadily on his own. “He is stable,” I said softly to the nurse. “Still weak but the worst is behind us.” Liam stirred and opened his eyes. “Mom?” “I am right here sweetheart,” I replied brushing his hair back. “You are doing so well.” Lucas and Asher entered the room at the same time. The tension between them was immediate but they both focused on Liam first. “Hey champ,” Lucas said kneeling beside the bed. “You scared us last night.” Asher stood on the other side. “You fought hard kid. Just like your mom.” Liam smiled weakly. “You both came for me.” I felt tears sting my eyes watching them. For a brief moment the three of us felt almost like a family. But that moment shattered quickly. Lucas pulled me aside into the hallway after the nurse left. His eyes were full of emotion. “Soren please listen to me,” he said quietly. “Last night showed me everything. I have been a fool. I want to change. I want to be the father Liam deserves and the man you deserve. Give me another chance. We could be a real family again.” I stepped back. “Lucas stop. I cannot do this right now.” He reached for my hand. “I know I hurt you badly. But I have grown. I see now what I lost. I love you Soren. I never stopped.” Asher appeared in the doorway. He had clearly heard everything. His face was dark with jealousy. “Enough Lucas,” Asher growled. “She has made her choice. Stop trying to manipulate her with pretty words.” Lucas turned to face him. “This is not manipulation uncle. This is me fighting for my family. Something you ran from years ago.” Asher stepped closer. “I ran from a poisoned family. The same blood that made you abandon your mate on your anniversary. You do not deserve her.” “You think you are better because you took her in?” Lucas shot back. “She was my mate first. We have a son together. That bond means something.” I stepped between them. “Both of you stop. This is not helping Liam. We have bigger problems right now.” They both went quiet but the anger still burned between them. I called for the trusted pack elder who had been waiting outside. “Elder Thorne,” I said. “Please tell us about the Shadow Gift. We need to understand what is happening with Liam.” The old man sat down slowly. His voice was rough but clear. “The Shadow Gift is an ancient power in your bloodline. It gives certain wolves enhanced healing and strength but it also makes them targets. Liam carries a strong version of it. That is likely why his heart condition was so severe and why the Shadow Vipers want him.” Asher frowned. “Why would they want him?” “To control the power or destroy it,” Elder Thorne replied. “The Vipers have been hunting bloodlines like yours for years. They believe controlling the Gift will make them unstoppable.” Lucas looked shocked. “My father mentioned it once but I thought it was a myth. Does this mean Liam is in even more danger?” “Yes,” the elder said. “The Gift is waking up inside him because of the surgery stress. He will need protection from all sides.” The revelation hung heavy in the room. I felt overwhelmed trying to process it all. “This explains why they took him,” I said. “They want to use him or eliminate the threat.” Asher paced the room. “We need to tighten security. No one outside our inner circle gets near Liam.” Lucas nodded. “I agree. But we also need to find who helped the Vipers last night. Someone knew exactly where the clinic was.” Accusations started flying fast. Asher suspected one of Lucas’s men. Lucas accused Asher’s pack of having loose lips. I tried to mediate but my own emotions were a mess. “Both of you need to work together,” I said firmly. “Liam is the priority. Not your old grudges.” Asher looked at me. “I am trying Soren. But every time he talks about getting you back it makes me want to rip his throat out.” Lucas met my eyes. “I am not giving up on us. Not when we have a second chance.” I rubbed my temples. “I need time to think. Right now we focus on keeping Liam safe.” Later that afternoon I went through security footage from the clinic attack. Something caught my eye. One of Asher’s most trusted lieutenants, Marcus, had been on his phone right before the Vipers arrived. He looked nervous. My stomach dropped. I pulled Asher aside. “I think I found something,” I said showing him the footage. “Marcus was acting strange. He might be the one who leaked the location.” Asher stared at the screen in disbelief. “Marcus has been with me for ten years. This cannot be right.” But the evidence was there. A high-ranking member of the Iron Fangs inner circle had betrayed us. Someone we trusted had helped the enemy kidnap Liam. The realization hit hard. We had a traitor in our midst and they were still among us.
