The howl of enemy wolves split the quiet night and the Iron Fangs compound erupted into complete chaos. Rival packs attacked from all sides at once with coordinated fury. The war we had feared for so long was finally here and it had come faster than any of us expected.
“Defend the center!” Asher shouted as he shifted into his powerful wolf form. “Protect the medical tents at all costs! Do not let them break through!”
I shifted too feeling my bones change shape and my senses sharpen instantly. My wolf form was smaller than most but fast and agile. I grabbed my medical bag with my teeth and ran toward the front lines where the fighting was heaviest and most desperate.
Gunshots mixed with the terrifying sounds of snarling wolves and the clash of bodies. The bright moonlight made everything look silver and deadly. I stayed low to the ground treating wounded fighters as I moved forward through the chaos trying to stay useful while staying alive.
“Stay with me,” I told a young wolf with a deep gash across his side. I pressed clean bandages tight against the wound while bullets flew overhead. “You are going to be okay. Just keep breathing and stay focused on my voice.”
Asher fought like a demon nearby. His massive black wolf tore through enemy fighters with brutal efficiency protecting both me and the rest of the pack. Lucas battled fiercely on the other side of the field showing the same raw strength and determination I remembered from our past.
“Soren get back to safety!” Asher growled through our mind link. “It is too dangerous up here right now.”
“I am needed here,” I replied shifting back to human form to stitch a deep wound on a fallen pack member. “Keep fighting. I have the injured ones covered.”
The battle grew fiercer with every passing minute. Wolves clashed under the bright moonlight in a chaotic and deadly dance of teeth claws blood and pure fury. I moved quickly between the injured using every bit of medical skill I had. My hands became covered in blood but I kept going without stopping for even a second.
A large enemy wolf suddenly broke through our defensive line and charged straight at me with deadly intent. I shifted quickly and met him with my own fangs bared. We rolled across the ground fighting hard. I was smaller but faster and more agile. I managed to s***h his side deeply before Asher crashed into him like a freight train taking the enemy wolf down completely with a savage bite to the neck.
“You are too close to the front lines,” Asher said through the link breathing heavily. “I cannot lose you out here Soren. Please be careful.”
“I am fine,” I replied. “We need to push them back before they reach the inner compound and get to Liam.”
During the heaviest part of the fighting a shocking betrayal was fully exposed. Marcus was not working alone. One of Asher’s most trusted lieutenants suddenly turned on us in the middle of the battle attacking his own pack members from behind without warning.
“Traitor!” Asher roared charging at him with deadly fury and righteous anger.
The lieutenant shifted and fought back fiercely. “The Vipers offered me real power. You were never going to share the Shadow Gift with anyone else. I made the smart choice.”
The revelation spread through the pack like wildfire. Loyalty was being tested in the worst possible way. Wolves who had fought together for years were now turning on each other in confusion rage and heartbreak.
I saw a small opening in the enemy lines and made a life-saving decision. I shifted back to human form and used my medical knowledge to create a powerful diversion. I threw several medical smoke bombs mixed with strong herbs that confused the enemy wolves senses and made them disoriented and panicky. The bold move gave our pack the advantage they needed to push the attackers back and regain control of the field.
“Soren that was brilliant,” Asher said as we fought side by side. “You keep surprising me every single time.”
We turned the tide slowly but surely. The rival packs started retreating as the moon climbed higher in the sky. But the victory came at a heavy cost. Many good wolves were injured or killed. Parts of the compound were damaged or still burning. And the main traitor had escaped into the night before we could catch him.
As the fighting finally died down a pack scout ran up to us breathing hard and covered in dirt.
“Alpha there is something you both need to see immediately,” he said. “We captured one of the Viper leaders alive. He talked before he died.”
The scout handed us a bloodied note. The words written on it made my blood run ice cold.
“The Shadow Gift is not just power. It is the key to immortality itself. And the doctor now carries the dormant seed inside her after treating the boy. She will be next. The hunt for her has only just begun.”
I stared at the note in complete shock. The true nature of the Shadow Gift was far more dangerous and twisted than we had ever imagined. And now it was not just Liam who was in danger.
Someone or something wanted me too.
