The small safe house smelled like antiseptic and fear the moment I walked in. My hands shook slightly as I set my medical bag down. This was the first time I would meet my son face to face.
A little boy lay on the bed looking far too small for his four years. Pale skin. Dark hair. My eyes looking back at me.
“Who are you lady?” he asked in a weak voice.
I sat carefully on the edge of the bed. “I am a doctor. Your dad asked me to help you feel better.”
Lucas stood in the corner watching us. “Liam this is Doctor Frost. She is the best.”
Liam tried to sit up but started coughing hard. I placed a gentle hand on his chest. “Easy buddy. Do not move too much.”
I pulled out my stethoscope and listened. The sounds coming from his heart made my stomach twist. Irregular. Weak. Struggling.
“How do you feel right now Liam?” I asked softly.
“Tired,” he whispered. “My chest hurts when I breathe deep. I cannot play without getting dizzy.”
Lucas stepped closer. “He has been getting worse every single day. The pack doctors say they have never seen anything like it.”
I moved to the portable ultrasound machine and started scanning his small chest. The images confirmed my worst fears. The left side of his heart was badly underdeveloped. Large holes between chambers. Narrowed veins. Scar tissue building fast because of his wolf blood trying to heal itself.
“This is extremely rare,” I said quietly. “A combination of defects that almost never happens together.”
Lucas knelt beside the bed. “Can you fix it? Tell me straight.”
I kept my eyes on the screen. “It will require a very risky surgery. Hours long. I would need to rebuild parts of the heart close the holes and widen the veins. His body will try to fight the repairs because he is a wolf. Only I have the technique to manage that.”
Liam looked up at me with trust in his tired eyes. “Will it hurt a lot?”
I brushed hair from his forehead. Something pulled hard in my chest. A motherly feeling I did not want to name. “I will do everything I can to make sure it does not. You are very brave you know that?”
He gave me a small smile. “Dad says I am.”
Lucas watched us closely. “You are good with him. Natural.”
I ignored the comment and focused on Liam. “I need to run a few more quick tests okay? Just to be sure.”
For the next twenty minutes I worked carefully asking Liam questions about his symptoms while taking blood and checking his oxygen levels. He answered every question even when he was clearly exhausted. The motherly pull grew stronger with every minute. This was my child. My blood. And he was suffering.
“You are doing great,” I told him when he winced during a test. “Almost done.”
Lucas spoke up. “How bad is it really?”
I stood up and wiped my hands. “Bad. Without surgery he has maybe two weeks. With it there is still a real chance he does not wake up. But I am the only one who has successfully handled cases this complex in werewolves.”
Lucas ran a hand through his hair. “Then we do it. Whatever it takes.”
I packed my bag slowly. “I will prepare everything. Surgery in two days at the latest. But Lucas this changes nothing between us. This is only for Liam.”
He nodded but his eyes stayed soft. “I understand. Seeing you with him though… it reminds me of everything we lost.”
I turned away. “Do not go there. Not now.”
Liam reached out and touched my hand. “Thank you for helping me.”
That simple touch hit me harder than anything. I squeezed his fingers gently. “You are welcome sweetheart. Get some rest.”
Lucas walked me outside to my motorcycle. The night air felt cool on my skin.
“You felt it too didn’t you?” he asked quietly. “That connection with him.”
I climbed on the bike. “He is a sick child. Any doctor would feel for him.”
Lucas smiled sadly. “Keep telling yourself that.”
I rode back to the compound fast. My mind raced with surgical plans and unwanted emotions. When I pulled through the gates Asher was waiting near the main building. His arms were crossed and his face looked tight.
“You were gone a long time,” he said as I got off the bike. “Was that about Lucas again?”
I walked over and hugged him. “I had to examine the boy. The condition is worse than I thought. Extremely rare. Only I can do the surgery.”
Asher held me but his body stayed tense. “Why does he keep coming to you specifically? There are other good doctors.”
“Because I am the best at this,” I said. “And the boy is mine biologically. Asher please trust me.”
He sighed and kissed the top of my head. “I do trust you. I just do not trust him. Something feels off about all of this.”
Before I could reply gunshots shattered the quiet night. Screams broke out across the compound.
“Shadow Vipers!” someone yelled. “They are attacking!”
Chaos exploded instantly. Bullets flew through the air. Wolves shifted with loud howls. I grabbed my medical bag and ran toward the fighting.
“Get inside!” Asher shouted at me.
“I am a doctor,” I yelled back. “People need me out here.”
A young pack member lay on the ground clutching his bleeding side. I dropped beside him.
“Stay with me,” I said pressing hard on the wound. “What is your name?”
“Jake,” he gasped. “It burns bad.”
I worked fast cleaning and packing the gunshot. “You are going to be okay Jake. Keep talking to me.”
Another fighter went down nearby. I moved to her next. A deep claw wound across her arm.
“This is going to sting,” I warned as I cleaned it. “Bite down on this.”
Gunfire continued around us. Wolves from both packs clashed in a blur of teeth and fury. I kept moving between the injured treating wounds as fast as I could while staying low.
Asher fought like a beast nearby. He shifted halfway taking down two enemy wolves with powerful strikes.
A rival biker aimed a gun at one of our women. I shouted a warning and kept working on my patient. My hands stayed steady even as my heart raced.
Suddenly a massive enemy wolf broke through the line and charged straight at me. I backed up against a truck. No time to run.
Just as it lunged Asher appeared in full shifted form. His huge black wolf body slammed into the attacker protecting me. They rolled across the ground in a savage fight. Claws tore flesh. Blood sprayed.
Asher won but took a deep bite wound to his shoulder in the process. He shifted back breathing hard and staggered toward me.
“You are hurt,” I said rushing to him.
He winced but pulled me close. “Better me than you.”
The battle still raged around us but in that moment all I could see was the blood pouring from his wound and the fierce love in his eyes.
