Chapter 3: Alexis' POV

1161 Words
I watched her get up and leave, frowning. Where on earth could she be going? I pulled out my phone and looked at the time, sighing heavily. It was late, very late, and I still wasn’t able to go home. I mean, they couldn’t really stop me, but something about the way Sofia watched me made me feel… Safe? I think that’s the word I was looking for.      I glanced down at the clothes she had lent me and frowned. A tank top and shorts? No way, I wanted to be in my own, stylish clothes. I snapped my fingers and was instantly back in my little cottage. I grabbed a bag and packed it up as quickly as I could, being careful not to forget my toothbrush or shoes, then snapped my fingers and was back in the room.      She was already back from wherever she had gone, sitting at her desk, running her hands through her hair. She was staring at a piece of paper, grumbling something incoherent. I thought I heard something about someone disappearing. I cleared my throat and she spun around in her chair, growling softly before she realized it was me, then the growl vanished almost instantly. I shrank back slightly, confused and concerned.      “Everything… Okay?” I asked uneasily.      She shook her head, clearing whatever thought had been there, and sighed. “I was worried something had happened to you…” Her voice broke a little as she spoke, which only confused me more. She’s known me all of, what, three hours? And an hour of that was me spending time packing my things.      She seemed to notice the bag on my arm for the first time and frowned. “How did you…?”      I knew what she meant, and realized I had been caught red handed. There was no getting out of this without a damn good explanation.      Thankfully, I heard a knock on the door, and she turned toward it, growling in frustration. That wasn’t a human sound, was it…? It certainly wasn’t something I’d ever heard from a human before. She flung the door open, glaring at whoever was on the other side.      “What, Jenny!?” She snarled. That, I knew for a fact, wasn’t a human sound. No human could make that sound so… real. I back away as she talked with Jenny.      Jenny didn’t seem at all phased by the fact that Sofia was making such inhuman noises, and handed her a sheet of paper and a book. “More research for you. Found out some other things about-” Another snarl cut her off and Sofia looked back at me. Jenny nodded slowly and handed her the book and paper. “You can read it yourself”. She turned on her heel and walked away, and I could’ve sworn I saw a look of pain cross her face. Something wasn’t right about this place, and I was intent on finding out what it was.      When Sofia turned back to face the room, she immediately place the paper in the book and shoved in beneath her pillow. I made a mental note of that for when she left me alone in the room again. After that was done, she turned back to me, eyes falling once again on the bag in my hand. I still hadn’t come up with an excuse.      “Well? Where did that come from?” She growled low. I felt like I should be afraid of her, but for some reason I felt drawn to her.      “None of your business” I grumbled and stuck my tongue out at her. I knew right away that that had been a mistake, but oddly a fun one.      She lunged at me, tackling me onto one of the separated twin beds, the one by the bathroom, knocking the bag from my hands. But she didn’t go for the bag. Instead, she stared down at me, and when I looked up, expecting to find a hard stare, all I saw were a pair of gentle blue eyes staring down at me through a mess of short blonde hair.      I flushed, feeling my heart rate increase. It was beating so loudly I was almost sure she could hear it too. When she tilted her head, seemingly listening to something, that only made me blush deeper.      "Erm… Hi there", I said sheepishly, sounding stupid.      She frowned, suddenly realizing what had just happened, and quickly climbed off the bed, leaving me feeling a little colder. I shook my head and sat up, staring at her as she reached for the bag, then handed it to me.      Without a word, she went back to the desk and sat down, staring at the piece of paper that she had been looking over when I had gotten back.      I felt strangely empty without her beside me, and I didn't understand it. Did she feel the same way? But we had only just met, surely I wasn't falling for her already!? I couldn't afford that, my father would kill me. Yet as I stepped closer to her again, that empty feeling seemed to fade away, vanishing completely when I laid my hand on her shoulder.      She looked up at me, her eyes flashing with surprise and… some other emotion. Pleasure, maybe?      "Can we go for a walk?" I asked quietly. I had seen how quickly she'd gotten angry at Jenny, and I didn't want to face that same anger.      I was surprised when her answer came out so smooth and calm, it was like talking to a whole other person. As if the whole situation of her tackling me had never even happened…      "Sure. Let me just finish with this and we can go." She turned back to her paper and grabbed a pen, scribbling some things down and signing it before stuffing it into her pocket.      I smiled slightly when she stood and turned to me, her eyes shining with what looked like joy, but maybe I was just reading more into things than what was really there.      She turned to the door, and I watched her hand turn the handle and pull it open. I resisted the urge to take her hand in mine as we left the room, but it took quite a bit of self control.      Sofia headed over to Sam and handed him the paper she had signed, then turned to me once more and we headed for the exit, the very same door we had come in through, where Jack was still standing guard. He didn't say anything as she opened the heavy metal door with almost no effort and we stepped through, letting it slam shut behind us.
