I had pinned her down. And I had liked it.
I was trying to hide my embarrassment by busying myself with the contract Sam had handed me when she asked to go for a walk. The moment her hand touched my shoulder I felt a strange spark, and I don't think I was able to keep all the pleasure out of my eyes when I turned to her.
I had acted like nothing had happened when I told her yes, because what was I supposed to say about that? 'Hey, sorry about that, there's just something crazy special about you and you have an effect on this creature I share my body with'? No, that sounds crazy.
I turned the contract in to Sam and we headed for the exit, Jack still standing guard. I desperately wanted to take her hand in mine, but after that whole incident in my room, I wasn't about to freak her out further.
I still wanted to know how she had gotten a bag of her stuff, or what I assumed was her stuff. But that would be a question for another day. I didn't smell any gunpowder or silver when I had picked up the bag, so I didn't think there would be an issue there.
I glanced down at her as we walked up the spiral staircase and reached the ceiling, with the coffin directly above us. I flipped a switch and it slid aside once more. We stepped out and the coffin slid back into place. A pretty clever entrance if I do say so myself.
My eyes met hers for a moment, and I didn't want to tear my gaze away, but I knew I had to if I was going to walk without falling over. When I finally did, I felt her gaze on me for another moment as we walked until she finally looked away and took in our surroundings.
We were standing in the middle of a very small cemetery, maybe a couple dozen headstones, and a few larger buildings. It was the resting place of all our fallen comrades, and the buildings had been built for the more successful of our family. Which was excellent for hiding our actual entrance. All the larger buildings had switches and buttons that caused their coffins to slide aside, but anyone who walked down those staircases was trapped in darkness until either we checked our traps or they died.
Forest surrounded the cemetery, with a small road leading to it that the authorities had insisted be built. Just in case someone had stumbled upon in, they would at least see that people could visit it, even if they weren't wanted.
My family, as I called my fellow assassins, owned all the surrounding land, up to the very edge of the town and quite a decent amount in the opposite direction. It was perfect for training.
We walked into the trees and got maybe a hundred feet into the forest, far enough that if anyone else had followed us out, they wouldn't see where we had gone or hear us unless we yelled, before Alexis turned and faced me, scrutinizing my face. I watched her, head tilted.
"Why did you bring me here?"
I hadn't expected her to ask that particular question, but it was a lot easier to lie my way through that one rather than what I had expected.
"You were caught in the crossfire," I said simply. "You needed to be treated."
She shook her head, glaring at me. "If that were all it was, why not take me to a hospital?"
"Policy. We always make sure those we saved are taken care of in the best possible way." That wasn't a lie, it was policy that we handle those caught in the crossfire. It just wasn't the only reason I brought her here.
By the look on her face, she knew it. "What's the real reason? And don't even think about lying to me again."
"First of all, I didn't lie. It is policy."
"Then your other reasons," she demanded. I'd been caught, and I didn't like not telling her the whole truth anyway.
I took a deep breath and sighed. "Alright. There's something about you that… Calms me. Something special about you."
"Is that why you tackled me?" She didn't sound angry or even scared by that. She sounded… pleased?
"Is there a problem with that?" I questioned calmly.
She blinked. "Aside from the fact that we just met… no, not really." I watched her cheeks redden and smiled softly. That was the second time I'd seen her blush, and it only made me want more.
I stepped toward her, and she backed up slowly, not so much from fear as it was her trying to be anchored by something. Her back hit a tree when I took another step, and I grinned. Her blush only deepened, and I closed the distance between us, placing my hands on either side of her head.
I could hear her heart pounding, could feel her breath on my face. My own heart was beating out of my chest, but I held back, waiting. I had made clear in this moment what I wanted, but I wouldn't force myself on her.
When I didn't do anything, she looked up at me and took my face between her hands, pulling me in the last few inches and pressing her lips to mine in a deep, passionate kiss. The moment our lips touched, I felt sparks fly, and the beast inside me howled with pleasure.
All the research I had done had led me here, to her? Was she the one?
She pulled back after a moment, gasping for air, but I followed her quickly, never wanting that kiss to end. I pulled her against me, away from the tree. I wanted to be that anchor for her, I wanted to be what she needed, who she turned to, her protector.
She wrapped her arms around my neck and my own pulled her even closer by her waist. We were both breathing hard as I let her tongue slide into my mouth and explore.
Another minute or so later and we came up for air, breathing hard as I pushed away, hands shaking. This was the feeling that others had explained in journals and books, this was how I knew I had found her. But I couldn't tell her that. I had to show her. And that would come in time.
"What the hell…" She whispered, breathing deeply.
Now it was my turn to blush, and blush I did. "I'm sorry…" My voice was more growl than whisper, but not a threatening growl.
She shook her head and took a step toward me. "What was that…? Was that the… special thing?" She whispered, reaching me in three unsteady steps. She had felt it too.
I nodded slowly, heart still pounding. I watched her carefully, curious as to what she was intending to do. She reached up and cupped my cheek softly, and I turned my face into her warmth, kissing her hand softly.
I watched the blush spread across her face again and I smiled. She smiled back and I leaned down slowly, pulling her close again as I rested my forehead against hers softly. I heard what sounded like purring, and when I looked down at her, her eyes meeting mine, I knew it was coming from her. I growled playfully, and she smirked up at me.
“Careful there,” she grinned. I laughed softly and nuzzled into her neck, smiling.
“I don’t know where you came from, or how I found you, but…” I swallowed nervously, and I could feel my hands shaking. “Maybe… You could stick around awhile? I mean, um…” I hurriedly tried to think up an excuse. She had done really well when handling those thugs. “We could use you in our group. You handled those thugs really well, and you’re not very shaken up over it. Most people would be sitting on a bed, freaking out, and certainly wouldn’t be… Making out with the person who just killed 4 men right in front of them.” I laughed nervously. I sounded completely ridiculous.
It didn’t phase Alexis, though. She smiled and took my hand in both of hers. “Will I get to see more of you?”
I smiled back at her. “Of course. You’d have to… Well, share a room with me. So you’d see me at least nightly.”
Not even that comment phased her. She nodded and leaned in close. “Then I’ll stick around for a while.” Her breath was hot against my face, and I could feel the wolf itching to be let out. I wanted to show her every part of me, rather than hiding this from her.
I closed the distance quickly and kissed her once more, this time sliding my tongue into her mouth and exploring. Her scent, her voice, hell even the taste of her was intoxicating! She pressed tight against me, eyes closed softly. I tightened my hold around her waist, smiling against her lips. She ran a hand through my hair, and I felt my chest rumble with a sound of pleasure. She pulled back, looking up at my quizzically, but I just shook my head and she pulled me close again, keeping our lips a breath apart.
“You’ll have to open up at some point,” she whispered, her hand fisting in my hair.
I would have closed the distance again, if not for the sound of two sets of heavy footfalls approaching us. I knew the sound all too well. It was Sam and Jenny, coming to find me. I quickly pulled away from Alexis, the wolf inside me whimpering as I did, but I hid that sound from her.
“Sofia!” Sam called when he saw me, then stopped short when he saw Alexis, then the mess that was my hair. He whistled low and smirked at me as Jenny reached his sighed, frowning deeply. “Getting to work already, I see!” He laughed warmly, and that made me smile.
When I had gone to get my next contract from him, I had told him about the feeling I had about Alexis. I had explained the longing I felt when I was away from her, and the joy and calm I felt when I was with her. He had known exactly what that meant, and had explained I had finally found my mate, the one person who could keep me calm and tame the wolf inside me. The true test was to let my wolf out around her, and if it didn’t attack her, she was the one. But I wanted to be as sure as I could be in my human form before I tested that. Even if she wasn’t my mate, I didn’t want to hurt her. But after our shared kiss, I was almost positive she was the one. I had never felt those sparks with anyone. It had been like fireworks.
I rolled my eyes at Sam, and saw hurt flash across Jenny’s face at his comment. I didn’t want to hurt her either, but she had been obsessed with me for five years, and every time she’d try to make an advance on me I had turned her down. I had even told her straight out that I didn’t feel what she felt for me, but she still kept trying, thinking maybe if I never found my mate I would settle for her.
I glanced over at Alexis, who was blushing bright red, and laughed softly, pulling her against me. “I guess you caught us, Sam. Now, if you don’t mind.” I made a shooing motion at him and Jenny, smirking. They got the hint, and Sam grinned at me.
“We’ll talk later!” He called as he ran back to the hideout. Jenny was slower in following him, but eventually we were alone again.
Alexis looked up at me, confusion written all over her face. “What did he mean, ‘We’ll talk later’?”
I shook my head, laughing. “Don’t worry, he’s just being dumb. But we should probably head back.” I leaned down and kissed her again, then took her hand in mine and we began the short walk back to the hideout.
