Serenity Pov
I had been avoiding Chris for days now. I was worried Selene would find out. She was still raving about her date and how much she liked Chris. I was worried I was going to hurt her and we were having enough problems as it is.
"Good morning girls," Janet said as we entered the kitchen.
"Hi," we both said. Chris and Derek were sitting eating breakfast already. Chris looked up at me and I quickly looked away. After we ate breakfast, we left to go to school. I was not enjoying these trips to high school. I don't know how kids here do it. I quickly grabbed Selene's hand when we arrived and dragged her to our first class. I heard Derek shout "Where's the fire." I really just needed to stay far away from Chris. It almost kind of hurt though. I shook that thought away and told myself " I'm doing this for Selene."
It was finally lunchtime and as Selene and I walked to the cafeteria I noticed Derek and Chris surrounded by a group of kids. They both looked upset.
"SHUT UP!" Chris shouted.
"What, am I wrong?" The boy in the center said. "Your mother takes in kids but can barely feed them. You all wear cheap clothes, cheap shoes, and you guys have jumped around from place to place in the last year alone. Your poor and your mother probably w****s around to barely make ends meet." Chris glared at him and then punched him in the face.
"Yo, Chris relax," Derek said. Derek went to go grab Chris and pull him back.
"Yeah, listen to the orphan," Derek grinned and said nothing back.
"Shut the f**k up, Trey," Chris groaned. Trey walked up closer to Chris and said.
"Make me," with a grin he pushed Chris and suddenly Chris pushed back and fell on top of Trey. Trey was trying to push him off but Chris started swinging. Trey finally got a good hit and then rolled Chris off of him. Trey kicked Chris and Derek rushed to stop him. He pushed Trey to the ground and he went to help Chris get up. Selene was worried so she ran off to his side. I slowly walked forward and noticed he was having difficulty breathing. He held his chest and I felt my chest tighten. Trey was trying to go for Chris again and I quickly walked up to him.
"MOVE!" Trey shouted. I didn't.
"Serenity," Chris tried to move me aside. "I'll take care of this." Trey moved forward and so did Chris. I felt my spirits growing inside me. The power boiling over and I wanted to hurt Trey. I wanted to hurt him for hurting Chris.
"Hey! I can't move," Trey said. I had gotten control over all the liquid in his body. "My body, it's hot. I feel like I'm burning." I felt a hand touch my shoulder.
"Woah, your really hot," Chris said. Selene quickly came in front of me.
"Serenity, stop," she whispered. I wasn't listening. My mind and heart went blank. "Your eyes." I stopped looking at Trey and looked over at her.
"Your eyes are pitch black," Chris said. I closed my eyes as quickly as I could and ran outside. I ran to the only place I knew I should and could go to.
"Please, please forgive me," I begged to the spirits. "I didn't mean to hurt him. I didn't want to hurt him."
"That's not exactly true, now is it?" I heard a voice but I had never heard of the spirits actually communicating verbally before. "You may not know me but I know you, dear." Suddenly, a man with ash brown hair and grey eyes was standing before me.
"You look like me," I said. "Except for the eyes, I know you, your Alexander."
"I would have preferred you called me your grandfather but yes, I am Alexander," he said boldly. "Serenity, you were named after my grandmother. My mother always told me how brave she was and how modest and elegant she presented herself to others."
"I don't think I take after her then," I said sadly.
"Then you must take after me," he grinned. "You are strong, brave, and caring but yes you can be reckless at times."
"You were reckless. I thought Selene kept you stern and noble," I pondered.
"She did but she wasn't always around for all of my lifetimes. Until I met her, I knew I was going down dark paths and choosing to bring out the worst sides of me," Alexander told me. "I know you were just trying to protect that young man but I need to warn you, there are mistakes, we can't take back."
"I know and it won't happen again," I tried to reassure him.
"Won't it, you think you have a handle on your power but you really don't," he said. "You have been groomed your whole life into becoming the next Phoenix King. Did you really have to practice? Or did you think it came naturally and you just took it as such? You are very powerful and will make an incredible Phoenix King one day but you haven't controlled that strength and that fury that comes with our spirit powers. Just like me, you grew into believing it would all come naturally because that is all you have ever known but then you have to fight but if you don't know what your fighting for or for whom, you just use your powers recklessly and hurt those who can't defend themselves properly."
"I'm sorry," I said tearfully.
"Oh my dear Serenity, don't be sorry. Don't be afraid, just breathe and look deep inside of you before you act," Alexander came closer to me and hugged me. "You are a good person, never forget that."
"I don't know if I believe that," I told him. "I had a vision."
"SSH, the visions that the spirits give us, aren't our future or our destiny," he held my hands. "They are meant to show us a piece of time that can still be altered or give us hope in our time of need. Remember the spirits don't give us visions of what we want but what we need."
"Yeah, I know," I said somberly. "I wish you and Selene were still around."
"So do I but we are still enjoying our blissful love even to this day. And don't worry we keep an eye on you and your sister and our little girl, well she is not so little anymore." I smiled at that. "Serenity, if you are anything like me, you will find your way no matter the obstacle, no more how dark the journey, no more how lost or far you are, you will find your way."
I gave him another big hug and thanked him.
"Thank you, grandfather."
