Chapter 1
Ryan’s POV
Life has been going well for a while and business is going as usual in Awana.
Awana is a small town and very secluded. Originally, there was only us, werewolves that lived here. We had everything we needed, as school for the youth, enough forest ground so our wolves would be happy. And then, humans started to find the idea of a small community enticing.
We had to adapt as humans populated the area that we now shared with them. We also had to be careful and that meant that they could never find out what we were. We shared the same schools, but that’s pretty much were that ended for most of us.
Of course, I can’t do anything like the other members of my pack. I had to become best friend with my human classmate, Ellie. We have been inseparable since the 5th grade, when she moved in Awana. We did so much pranks together that everyone grew tired of us pretty quickly. But, we were having the time of our lives.
As soon as she graduated high school, that’s were our friendship kind of took the equivalent of a speed bump. She moved to Ohio to go to college and I never went. I knew that my future as a pack leader was going to be enough work for me already. Going to college and studying all the time does not equal fun in my book.
So, she left, and we talked a few times a year, and saw each other when she came into town to visit her parents. But it wasn’t the same. We grew apart more and more as the time went and we kind of grew apart.
Imagine my surprise when I learned that she was coming back here. I didn’t even think that it would happen. I remember her talking about getting away from here forever and never coming back. Saying that there was no opportunity and there was just a whole world of boredom.
What I seriously wondered was what finally changed her mind. Because the old her, was dead set on staying away.
Ellie’s POV
“This will be your office. If you want to reach me, you just have to press 1. I’m on speed dial since I’m your assistant.”
She explained so many things that my head was about to explode. I also had no clue what was where in this office. God, I was a mess today.
Probably because you are so nervous about seeing Ryan again, the voice in my head said. As usual, I didn’t have much a comeback for apart from a well-placed shut up. That always did the trick.
“Oh, and I almost forgot, you have a meeting with James in 15 minutes. He wanted to welcome you officially in the office and all that.” My assistant said just as she was about to leave.
Awesome. Some more things to do and think about while I was so lost in this office.
I have been in so many of the offices in this town, legally for some and not for others. When I was young, Ryan and I used to sneak in them just to see if we could. But this one is new, and I have no idea where anything is. At least my assistant seemed nice. I have never really talked to her before. I’m pretty sure she was in High school at the same time as me, but I can’t remember who she is. Even if the town is small doesn’t mean that I can recognise every one of the 5 000-ish people here.
Just about 15 minutes later, I was directed to a conference room. James was there, just as my assistant said. He was just like I remembered. Sporting the nerdy look with his glasses and still getting all the ladies with the suit and the good looks, I supposed. Good thing that I have never been one of the women he charmed because I would have never accepted this job.
“Ellie!” He said as soon as he saw me, before giving me a bear hug. “It’s been so long. How are you, tell me everything. “
Oh, I must have forgotten to mention that James is my annoying little brother. I knew he would nag me all day, if I didn’t fess up. So I did.
I told about everything since we last saw each other, which wasn’t much to be honest. It was the classic story. Girl likes boy, boy pretends to like girl back. It also ends with a broken heart, but just for me. Ashton is just fine and being the best asshole, he can be.
We talked for the rest of the day and honestly, I felt good about being back here. For once in my life, I didn’t feel like I was trapped in a world that I couldn’t escape.
