Chapter 1 — Shadows of an Omega
The morning mist clung to the forest like a veil, silver tendrils curling through the trees as the pack stirred to life. Elara padded softly through the clearing, her arms loaded with baskets of herbs and folded linens, the weight more than her slender frame should have carried. Yet she did not complain. Omegas weren’t expected to complain. Her boots sank into the damp earth as she crossed toward the healing den, the faint murmur of warriors already at training drifting on the breeze. The sharp c***k of blows, the barked commands of their leader—it was a sound that always made her heart race, though not from fear. Kael was out there. The thought struck like lightning, sending a quick flush across her cheeks. She tried to push it down, to focus on the linens, on the tasks of the morning. But her mind betrayed her, conjuring the image of him in motion: tall, broad-shouldered, eyes as sharp and cold as the steel of his father’s blade. The future Alpha of the Silvermane pack. And her mate. At least, she prayed he would be. “Still daydreaming, Elara?” The teasing voice made her start. She turned to find Lila striding toward her, hair tumbling in dark curls, her grin wide enough to banish shadows. Lila was everything Elara was not: confident, bold, unafraid to meet anyone’s gaze. The two had been inseparable since childhood, though their stations could not have been more different. Elara rolled her eyes. “I’m working, not daydreaming.” “Mm-hm. And I’m the Moon Goddess herself.” Lila plucked a folded cloth from the top of the basket and tossed it back with a laugh. “I saw the way you looked toward the training field. Careful, someone might notice.” Elara’s stomach tightened. “I wasn’t—” “You were.” Lila’s tone softened. “Don’t be ashamed. The ceremony is only days away. It’s natural to wonder.” Natural, perhaps. But dangerous. Everyone knew Kael had little patience for weakness, and Omegas like Elara were the weakest of all. If he turned his back on her… Elara swallowed hard, forcing the thought away. “I just want to belong,” she whispered. Lila’s expression gentled, but before she could answer, a sharp bark cut through the clearing. “Elara!” Diana’s voice. The Beta’s daughter strode toward them, her golden braid gleaming in the weak light, her fine tunic spotless compared to Elara’s plain dress. Diana’s smile was all sweet venom. “You forgot to fetch fresh water for the den. Honestly, do you ever think?” Heat burned Elara’s face. “I— I was just about to—” “You were dawdling,” Diana snapped. “The healers need water, not your excuses.” She leaned in, her voice dropping so only Elara could hear. “You’d better pray Kael doesn’t reject you. No one wants a useless Luna.” With a triumphant toss of her braid, Diana swept past them. Elara stood frozen, throat tight, hands trembling around the basket. “Don’t listen to her,” Lila said fiercely. “She’s just jealous.” Elara gave a brittle laugh. “Jealous? Of me?” “Of course. You’re kind. She’s… well, Diana.” But Elara wasn’t sure kindness was worth anything in a pack that valued strength above all. She bent her head, hurrying toward the well, Lila trailing after her like a shadow. As she lowered the bucket into the dark water, Elara let herself breathe. Just a few more days. Then she would know. The Moon Goddess paired mates for a reason. Kael had to accept her. He would see past her station, wouldn’t he? He would see the bond, feel the pull she already felt so strongly. And yet… a sliver of doubt gnawed at her, colder than the morning mist. Across the clearing, Kael’s voice carried, firm and commanding as he barked an order to the warriors. Elara turned instinctively, her gaze drawn to him like a moth to flame. For a fleeting heartbeat, his eyes swept across the field, cold silver locking with hers. Elara froze, breath catching. But Kael looked away just as quickly, as though she were nothing. The bucket slipped in her hands, water sloshing over the rim. Lila grabbed it before it tipped. “Elara.” Her friend’s voice was gentle. “Don’t give up hope.” Hope. It was fragile, like glass in her chest. She clung to it anyway, because it was all she had. That night, lying awake in her small corner of the den, Elara whispered a prayer to the Moon Goddess. “Please. Let him see me. Let me be enough.” The silver light spilled through the narrow window, painting her face in its glow. She closed her eyes, not knowing that this prayer would be the last of her innocence—and the first step toward a destiny far greater than she could imagine.
