Chapter 1: Posters

How does it feel when you’re in a world of great euphoria, happiness, everything put in place in perfect order? No prejudice? No aggression? No crimes or human trafficking? Would it feel nice? Perfect? Or lacking? Maybe uncertainty. “Can I still get one of these at five dollars?” I asked the pharmacist. I peeked at my wallet seeing the lesser bills I had with me. How could I withstand my projects with these? That, I don’t know the answer to. Regardless, these medicines are pretty much urgent for my brother. I can’t leave him hanging like that. I might have to work part-time again like what I always do. I nodded at the cashier and bought the best my money can and departed. As I was walking down the pavement, a poster stuck on a wall caught my attention. It was a modeling agency hiring girls who wanted to take their shot. “Dance for a night, and take $500 per video! Apply now,” I whimpered, as my eyebrows shot up upon reading it. I looked down at myself. I’m pretty decent enough. It’ll be a great help if I get ratified on one of these! But no, it might be a scam. Agencies won’t pay you hundred dollars for just one picture especially when you’re not prominent and have no fans clubs. I crumpled the paper and wiggle it out of nowhere. As I walk down the boulevard, a poster is headed to my face. Because of animosity, I removed it from my face whilst walking feeling infuriated. “Goodness!” I groaned when a car was about to pass through but I didn’t notice it because of this goddamn sheet! My eyes went to the poster. I was about to crumple it again for the second time when I was astonished to see what was written on it. “Five pictures for a day, go home with $1000,” the poster that landed on my face took me by surprise as I was walking down the street after buying some essentials for my brother. One thousand dollars for one night? How unrealistic! Earlier, I found a poster for $500, and now for $1000? I put up with the poster with me and stared at it with wide eyes. The agency building that was attached to it isn’t far from here where I am right now. It would be a great benefit for my and my brother’s therapy if I’ll earn from these. But still, something inside me thinks it’s a fraud but my mind says I should go for it, completely contradicting each other. Practically speaking, you wouldn’t attain money as substantial as this if you kept on working as a part-time. I ceased at the near waiting shed, I set the plastic I have on the chair and peered at the paper again. I was there bewildered, thinking of attempts to get my shot and amass with these. It took me over ten minutes before thoroughly having a decision. The remaining bills in my wallet were just over a dollar. The monthly allowance provided by our university hasn’t arrived yet. I was told it might get delayed for a week and the only money I have is one dollar. One dollar could buy a lot of things including my fare whenever I go to school. In the end, I shortly got a taxi and told him the address I saw. After a while, the taxi driver dropped me off in the veneer of the building. “Excuse me, I got this poster outside and saw that you’re hiring–” I was cut off when a guy– or should I say a gay who’s in front of me didn’t let me complete my paragraph. “You’re hired!” he exaggeratedly proclaimed. My forehead furrowed, a bit aghast upon what he just said. He put the cup that was in his hand and gave me a wide smile. “You’re hired, sweetheart!” “A-Am I?” He held my hand. I don’t have any choice but to go with the flow with him. He made me crouch on the presider in front of the table before giving me a neat smile. “Just let me ask you a few questions and explain the job you’re going in before I process our contract,” he asserted. I nodded awkwardly. “Okay, sir.” “Before we proceed, I’m Amer Walter and one of the recruitment managers of our agency,” he then gave me his ID. “So, how old are you, dear?” He got a paper out from the cabinet of his table and brought out a pen. He wrote something as his eyes went back to mine. I peeped at the ID that he provided me as I hoisted my gazes at him. “N-Nineteen, sir,” I said. “Do you have any experience in modeling?” I shook my head as an answer. “Stand up, please,” Not gonna lie, I was skeptical at first knowing the clothes I’m wearing. Nevertheless, I relinquished what the man in front of me said. I put down the bag I was carrying and settle it above the chair which I was in earlier. I clasped my shirt tightly. He delivered me a friendly smile before his eyes prowled from head to toe. Something transgression was implied in his eyes. “Turn around, dear,” he said. Like an obedient girl who’s in dire need of money, I heeded. Mr. Walter made me slump again. He gave me a brief explanation about their agency and pulled out two papers from his table. “Am I really going to receive a thousand dollars for five pictures, sir?” a whiff of skepticism was discerned in the complexion of my voice. He nodded, “Uh-huh, it’s all professed in the contract. But you don’t need to read it since the highlight of this is us, hiring aspirants to be one of our models and earn money.” “Is there any rules–” “None, dear. Hold on, I’ll just prepare our contract,” That fast? I bit the inside skin of my cheeks. Trying to de-stress as I feel anxious about this. Mr. Walter stood up and came inside a room a few meters away from us. Minutes had passed, he came back with two papers in his hand. He settled down on the chair again. He conveyed me a huge smile before handing me one of the papers he has. I read carefully the agreement stated. There are no ordinances given but they have one and only policy we should abide. Once I already signed the contract, we no longer can’t withdraw it. The contract duration is for two years. If we’re going to terminate it with the agency, we need to pay a large sum of money. “What’s wrong, dear?” Mr. Walter asked in a worried tone. My hands are shaking, too many trains of thoughts are running through my mind. The picture of my feeble brother is all that I think of. I was thwarted for over an instant and later on, my hands automatically rolled as I stated my name on the paper and validated it with my signature. I feel solace. A thorn was drawn from my heart. “Congratulations! You’re now part of our agency. Welcome aboard, Miss Andra Erlina Milburn!”
