Chapter 4

Elizabeth Simmons tossed her bag on the table and it landed with an annoying thump. Monday was just another busy day at the office. "Ken!" Ken Foster, her assistant peep his head in through the doorway. He wasn't happy to see her back in the office, ready to boss him around. Not that she did it anyway. "What is it you want?" Ken wasn't just an assistant, he was her friend as well. She glared at him and he squared his chin stubbornly. He may be her friend but he was still her assistant and she wouldn't want him being informal to her in the office. "Very matured of you" "I'm sorry, someone lost her way and celebrated her birthday without inviting me" Ken had seen the tweets "What celebration?" Elizabeth had no idea what he was talking about. Sure, she went out with Matilda on Friday night but that was just a little something her best friend had done to cheer her up, else she would have laid back in the room crying herself to sleep while asking herself what went wrong. Nothing went wrong, Jack Jefferson was only pretending not to notice her, he only wanted her when he needed a babysitter to stay with his sister, Elizabeth was the first person he would call. She was good enough to be his sister's nanny but not his lover. "You and Matilda, she said it was lit" "We went out to drink" "Without inviting me" He frowned. "It was just a stupid night anyway" "You were in an expensive club owned by one of the Billionaires in the city, it was obviously lit and not stupid" Ken didn't believe it, but Elizabeth wasn't about to tell him that Alfred smacked her butt while she struggled to break away from his hold. "You went to one of the night club owned by Alfred Wellington and you dare to call it stupid" "Don't say his name again" "Why? You know how much I love you Eli" Elizabeth rolled her eyes, Ken was going about this again. "I already said no" "It's just one date" "No and it's actually wrong for a boss to date her assistant" "So you are saying you won't date me because I'm just an assistant" "No that's not what I'm saying" "So what are you saying?" "That I don't love you" she admits hoping he would get the hint this time and leave but Ken would never. He has been in love with Elizabeth right from the first day he got a job to be her assistant. It wasn't love at first sight but gradually he had fallen in love with her and wasn't going to leave her. "You don't love me?" "Yes" "Well I still love you and I'm not going to stop" "You should Ken, the last thing I want to do is hurt you" "You won't" He shot a smile at her. His love for his boss was true and sincere, Elizabeth was a beautiful woman, how come Jack Jefferson wasn't seeing it. He thought "Did Jack wish you a happy birthday?" Ken could see right through her but he wasn't going to make this easy for her, Elizabeth needed to wake up from her daydreaming. Jack Jefferson was never going to look at her. At least, he already knows that. How come she didn't see that at all? "Yes he did" Elizabeth blinks her eyes, trying to find a distraction but Ken wasn't the kind of man who would fall for her lies. "You are lying" "What makes you think that I am?" "You will be smiling from ear to ear if he did but you are not smiling like that. Today's just one hell of a day for you, isn't it?" "Shut your mouth" "The truth hurts but then, you have to face it" "You can go to hell Ken" "You have to wake up from this dream Elizabeth and face the reality, Jack is never going to notice you, he has other women around him, not to mention the beautiful one I saw him with the other day" "Why are you telling me this?" Her heart squeezes, the thought of Jack and another woman brimmed tears to her cheeks but she quickly wipes it off. Jack Jefferson has made her cry more than he has made her smile. "You should stop hurting yourself and move on, both of you were just kids back then but now you are not anymore and he isn't in love with you. Jack is never going to fall for you even if you are the only woman on earth because you are not what he wants" "Go away" "I am not the enemy here" Ken was trying to help by finally opening her eyes and letting her see that she was only fooling herself. Elizabeth was feeling bad, everyone had told her this same thing but she didn't want to believe it, she wanted to hold onto the little hope she had as Jack's childhood friend. He was eventually going to fall in love with her and she was going to get the dream wedding that she wanted. "Well you are not helping anyway, you are just making me feel bad" "I'm sorry it is not my intention but sometimes you will need to learn the hard way" "Get out" Ken was surprised. Elizabeth was kicking him out of her office, he scoffed. He already hates Jack but now, he loathes him for leading Elizabeth on and making her treat him like the bad guy in the story. "Just go" "I can't believe you are kicking me out because of Jack" "Can't believe you are being a jerk now leave" Taking out an envelope, he lowered it On the table. He was furious "And by the way, the management sent you a birthday present, I'm sure you are going to love it. It is for you and Matilda, it is your suspension letter" He turned around and left her office slamming the door. "A suspension letter!" Her jaw dropped
