Chapter Four

854 Words
"Luke…?” Rita had now inched closer to him. In fact, she was standing directly by his side and was reluctantly reaching her hand out to touch his shoulder. As she had anticipated, he flinched away and so did she, deciding to give him some space. “So, this is about last night, huh?” she muttered under her breath, clumsily failing to realize that she was close enough for him to hear her. “What about last night?” He asked and she was startled out of her thoughts by hearing him speak about what she had just said. She looked completely nervous now. As though she didn’t quite know what to do or say next. “It’s not my place to talk about it. Your mother is waiting for you. You should get prepared. I’ll run the bath for-” “Who are you exactly?” He asked again, this time expecting an answer that told him more than just her name. Rita, still confused, obliged, as this would get him out of the bed sooner and before his mother would come barging into the room calling for his immediate attention. “Like I said, my name is ‘Rita’. It’s not my real name. Your mother and father took me in three years ago and I decided to work for them as a maid…” Luke, or rather Yvan, did not recall any of that. What she was saying was that she was basically a part of the family, though she was not blood related to either of them. “You don’t remember?” Rita asked, an expression of concern washed over her face, “Maybe you should stay in bed-” “No, I’ll meet my… ‘mother’,” saying that sounded very weird for Yvan. He got out of the bed and ignoring that he was wearing pyjamas because he didn’t quite understand that conventional attire of this strange place he had found himself I, he began to walk towards the door. “Really, Luke, I insist on running that bath for you. I’ll pick out an outfit for you. You can’t go out dressed like that,” Rita called out as she followed behind him, but he didn’t stop and opened the door instead to find himself faced with a choice of going either left or right down the hallway. He randomly decided to go left, not paying much attention to the extravagantly décor around him, until he reached the door that led out to the garden. There, he saw a woman enjoying a cup of coffee while basking in the morning sun. He supposed that that was his ‘mother’, so he walked out confidently. As soon as he was close enough, she looked up and looked at him with the same dignified expression his queen mother would have had on her face. Apart from the obviously different facial features, the woman’s poise matched that of his mother, and so he didn’t feel much awkwardness when he stopped before her. “I know you’re upset but you can’t walk around dressed like that. At least pretend to care about yourself,” the woman said with a strict but calm voice. Rita appeared behind him. “I told him… but he’s been acting very strange this morning. Almost as if he’s not here,” Rita explained to the woman. She looked at Yvan with a closely watchful eye and nodded. “Luke… about last night…” She paused for a moment to gather her thoughts while he waited in anticipation for her to continue, “I explicitly forbade you from dating that girl, Leah, yet you insisted on going against my orders…” Her words trailed off. Yvan was wondering whom this ‘Leah’ girl was that ‘Luke’ was supposed to be interested in. He apparently loved her so much that he went against his mother’s orders. Regardless, Yvan had no interest in Leah. He didn’t know her at all. He was only concerned with finding Caleana. “Fine. I won’t see her again,” Yvan interrupted his mother, surprising her and Rita, “I’m interested in someone else. I would prefer to spend my time trying to… find her instead.” His mother’s interest was piqued. She was not against the prospect of Like dating, however, she didn’t want him to date that girl from that wealthy family that had a feud with their family years ago. “Who is she?” The mother asked. Yvan did not have a response for that. Before he could reply, they were interrupted when a butler entered the garden to inform them that there was a guest. The butler stopped by Mother’s side and whispered down to her. A look of displeasure washed over her face. “I wanted to resolve this matter in due time but seeing as she has appeared her herself, I suppose this is the perfect time,” she stood up and instructed the butler to let the guest in, “Luke, get dressed. I’m sure you wouldn’t want her to see like this.”
