Summoned Into the CEO’s Elevator

861 Words
She didn’t dare delay answering Mu Jian Chen’s call. Last time, she’d kept him waiting three seconds too long. Just three—and that bastard had made her stand outside in the snow for half the night. Completely unreasonable. “Hello…” She grabbed her bag as she answered, preparing to leave at once—when a sharp click cut through the office. The CEO’s door swung open. A tall figure stepped out. Su Nian’en felt it instantly—an icy, oppressive gaze drilling into her back. She didn’t need to look. Han Xi Cheng. As if he knew exactly who was on the other end of the call, his deep, dark eyes locked onto her with ruthless precision. It was a warning. A silent threat. Don’t test me. Her fingers trembled. Su Nian’en lowered her head at once, politely nodding to Han Xi Cheng and the executives behind him. She didn’t dare meet his gaze again. Without thinking, her hand drifted down. The call slipped away from her ear. After everything she’d experienced today, Su Nian’en had learned one thing very clearly—Han Xi Cheng wasn’t normal. He was dangerous. A lunatic wrapped in tailored suits. She decided to wait. Wait until he left. Then she’d call Mu Jian Chen back and endure whatever punishment came with it. She risked a glance from the corner of her eye. Han Xi Cheng appeared to be looking straight ahead, already moving forward, no longer paying her any attention. Relief loosened her chest— And then his steps stopped. Right in front of her. “Secretary Su,” Han Xi Cheng said calmly, his gaze dropping onto her. A faint smile curved his lips. “Not leaving yet? Working overtime alone?” The secretarial department froze. Every pair of eyes snapped toward Su Nian’en. By now, everyone had packed up. Some had been ready to leave long ago. They’d only stayed behind for one reason—to catch another glimpse of Han Xi Cheng. And now— His words made it sound as if Su Nian’en were the only diligent one. As if everyone else were lazy, sneaking off early while she stayed behind to work overtime. The looks turned sharp. Hostile. “No, no,” Su Nian’en hurried to explain. “I was just about to leave.” Before she could say more, Zeng Shanshan rushed over and hooked an arm through hers. “Yeah, we’re leaving together.” Han Xi Cheng said nothing. He simply turned and walked toward the elevators. And like clockwork, the secretaries followed—step by step—forming a neat, adoring procession behind him. From behind, they looked like an escort. A harem. Su Nian’en clenched her jaw. At the same time, she quietly ended Mu Jian Chen’s call. She’d call him back later. Apologize properly. At worst, she’d endure another round of humiliation. After all, Mu Jian Chen was always the one hanging up on her. She’d never dared slight him. Never. They hadn’t even reached the elevator when her phone rang again. Urgent. Insistent. The ringtone blared through the hallway— March of the Volunteers. The air went deathly still. Su Nian’en wanted to disappear. Zeng Shanshan glanced down at the screen and smiled. “Oh! Nian’en, it’s your boyfriend. Answer it. President Han won’t mind if it’s your boyfriend.” Kind intentions. Lethal timing. Su Nian’en’s blood ran cold. The moment the word boyfriend left Shanshan’s mouth, she felt it— Han Xi Cheng’s gaze snapped toward her. Cold. Sharp. Deadly. As if saying: Try it. “Go ahead,” an executive chuckled. “President Han isn’t that unreasonable. Wouldn’t want you two fighting over this.” Now— She had no choice. Her finger barely touched the screen when Mu Jian Chen’s voice exploded in her ear. “Su Nian’en, you f*****g dare hang up on me? Have you grown a backbone?!” She winced, grateful it wasn’t on speaker. Biting her lip, she followed the crowd toward the elevators, lowering her voice. “I’m sorry… I didn’t mean to just now…” They reached the elevator bank. As president, Han Xi Cheng stepped into the executive elevator with the other executives. The rest of the secretaries clustered around the employee elevator, hoping to ride down with him—convinced that sharing an elevator might somehow mean something. By sheer coincidence— Only Su Nian’en was left behind. Perfect. She needed space. How was she supposed to calm Mu Jian Chen down with a dozen people listening? But then— “Secretary Su.” Han Xi Cheng’s voice rang out. “Ride with us.” Time stopped. Su Nian’en stared at him in disbelief. Shock rippled through both elevators. The executives inside stiffened. The secretaries outside looked like they’d been struck by lightning—some stunned, some openly regretful that they weren’t the one being singled out. In theory, Su Nian’en could refuse. She could say she’d wait for the next elevator. But she knew better. Her instincts screamed one thing— Han Xi Cheng’s patience was gone. And if she dared refuse now— The consequences would be far worse.
