CHAPTER 4
After school, I go to my locker. Today, Lucas is driving me to school because we take turns. This is his week. While I'm moving my books around to get what I need for my homework, a shadow falls over my locker. I look up into **Alpha Adolf**'s icy blue eyes. Awesome! What does my future Alpha want?
I control my anger and impatience. No point in making the person I'll probably be with for the rest of my life mad.
I breathe in deeply. "Alpha, how can I help you?" I think I did a great job of pretending to be uninterested while still being polite.
"Hey there, gorgeous. I don't think I've seen you before." Really? Is this his first line? Like we've never gone to the same schools before?
I gave my best fake smile. "I guess you haven't." It's hard to see through all of your fans. I close my locker and lean against it with my shoulder, facing him. I decide to have some fun and bat my eyes. "Are you an Alpha?" I ask, trying to give him my best wide-eyed, star-struck look.
"I am sweet, but don't let my aura scare you. I hear it can be a lot to handle. Wow! This guy really thinks a lot of himself. I can even hear Artemis snorting in my head. The joke is on him. **Wächter** cannot be affected by the Alpha aura or command at all. My dad says that in the past, Alphas cared too much about their **Wächter** and would tell them to stand down in a fight, which could hurt or even kill their Alpha. The Alpha command stopped working on us after a while. I guess I won't ever have to worry about that with this Alpha. He doesn't even know who I am or care about what my family has done for him.
And even though I can feel Adolf's aura, it doesn't affect me. But I don't want this jerk to know who I am or what I do.
"Oh wow," I say, putting my hand over my heart as if I'm trying to calm my heart, "It's really nice to meet you."
Artemis laughs in my head. "You're laying it on a bit thick, aren't you?"
Maybe I am, but really, an Alpha should know all of his pack members. It would be rude for him not to know who I am in normal situations, but the fact that my family has given so much for his and he doesn't even know who I am? Well, it just gets on my nerves.
He reaches out his hand to shake mine. "I'm Adolf, the Alpha heir of the Klingenhügel Rudel. You might have heard of me." I make my mouth look as convincing as possible and try to look even more flustered. "Oh, wow, nice to meet you," I say and shake his hand.
I didn't expect to feel a shock, like an electric current going through my hand, which made the hair on my arms stand up and down. It wasn't bad, but it was very surprising. For a moment, Adolf looks surprised, and I wonder if he felt it too. Strange. It could be static electricity from the locker.
He is holding my hand and looking at me with hope. I'm curious about what he's waiting for and why he won't let go when he finally talks. "Where I'm from, it's normal to say your name after someone else does." He gives me a charming smile, as if making women speechless is something he does every day. And it might be. He has stupid followers all day, every day. It can't be that hard to get them to stop talking. But I'm not one of his happy little friends, so I'm about to introduce myself when **Lucas** saves me.
"Hey, Ca—" I stop him before he can say my name. "Hey Lucas, do you know Adolf Alpha?" I ask him and give him a look that I hope he understands. Lucas gives me a "what the hell?" look before looking at Adolf.
"Of course." Alpha Adolf is from my pack and will be my Alpha in the future. I'm really grateful for Lucas right now. He might not know why I'm acting dumb, but he's going along with it. He bows his head and says "Alpha," which shows that he is submitting to Adolf.
Adolf nods and says, "Lucas." "I was just saying hello to your friend here." He looks back at me. "So, honey, what's your name and what pack do you belong to?"
Okay, now I'm getting mad. He really doesn't know who I am. I see Lucas flinch out of the corner of my eye. I need to move this along.
"Why do you think I'm not from your pack?" I raise an eyebrow at him, going from innocent to snarky.
He gives me a typical condescending Alpha look and raises his own eyebrow in response. "Well, honey, I know everyone in my pack, but I don't know you."
And now it's time for me to put that cocky jerk in his place.
I lean against him and put my hand on his chest. His chest was very chiseled and warm. Wow, are Alphas made of stone? I have to stop myself from running my hand over more of his body to see if it's all this hard and sculpted. Freya, get your head in the game.
I stand on my toes and bring my mouth up to his ear. He gets the hint and leans in too, so I can whisper, "Well, obviously you don't know every member." And my name isn't "Sweetheart."
I can almost hear him take a quick breath as I turn around and start to walk away. "Come on, Jay, I have to go home."
…………
Lucas looks at me as soon as we get in the car. "Okay, so you want to tell me what that was all about?" Why do you let Alpha Adolf believe you are from a different pack?
"I'm not," I say firmly. I mean, Adolf really did start that conversation. He clearly doesn't know who I am, but he's going to stand there and tell me he knows every member of his pack? "Jay, I'm not going to just let that go. Why would I? He's going to be the next Alpha of the **Klingenhügel Rudel**. At least he should be able to back up his arrogance. You heard what he said. He didn't even know I was from his group.
"So why not just say it?"
I stare at my best friend with my mouth open. "Are you kidding me right now?"
"Just be careful, Freya," he says, looking at me with a pleading look.
"Of what, Jay? That he might really know who I am and be mad at me? I'm not wrong here. And let's be honest, I'm pretty sure I could beat him in a fight. "Not that Alpha Alaric would ever let me fight him."
As he drives down the long, winding road to my house, my friend looks at me. "I'm just saying, you'll probably be stuck to him at some point." It's best not to make him the most wanted man before that. He will find a way to make your life hard.
He has a good point. If I haven't found my mate by the time Adolf becomes Alpha, my job as his **Wächter** will officially start. Then I might have to spend a long time with the Playboy Alpha and all of his friends. I don't even want to think about what I might have to see or hear to spend that much time with him. UGH!
"Okay, Lucas, you're right. I'll be nice if he comes up to me again. My best friend looks at me like he doesn't believe me. "What? I can be nice in the sandbox.
Lucas makes a noise. "Sure, but only if it's your sandbox and you have all the toys."
I don't care. "What's your point?"
He just shakes his head as he picks me up and drops me off at home. "See you tomorrow." I wave goodbye and go inside to get ready for training with my dad in the afternoon.
