CHAPTER 5
I don't know all the members of my pack? So that means she's in my pack? Not a chance! My dad has been telling me this since I was a kid. "Learn the names of everyone in your pack. They are what gives the pack strength. You can always count on them to be loyal if you show them how much you care about them as a pack member.
As I turn and walk to my car, these thoughts are all over my mind. Who the hell is she? And I didn't know it then, but she never gave in to me. She should have submitted to me like Lucas did if she was a member of the pack. So why didn't that she-wolf give in to me? And, damn, I didn't even get her name. I'm so lost in my thoughts that I almost hit Jonas Weber.
"Hey Adolf, did you get her?" I frown at him.
"Huh?"
He looks at me with a confused look. "That brunette we talked about earlier? Did you ask her name and what pack she belongs to?
I look over the top of my car at my friend and ignore his question. "Did you know her?"
He frowns at me as he gets into the car and sits in the passenger seat. "No, I only saw her from behind. Why?"
As I start the car, I say, "She made it sound like she was part of our pack."
"What's the problem?" he asks.
I say through clenched teeth, "The problem is that I didn't know who she was." How can she be in our pack if I don't know who she is? I see him as I come to a stop at a red light.
I can see the surprise and anger on my future Beta's face. "What do you mean you didn't know who she was? You know everyone in the group. I know everyone in the pack, for sure. You made sure of it.
The light turns green, and I focus on the road again as I go through the intersection. "Exactly! How can this be?
"I know it's a long shot, but do you think she was lying?" Jonas Weber wants to know.
I look at him like he's gone crazy.
"I know it sounds crazy, but there are female wolves out there who are saving themselves for their mate. Maybe she was worried about hurting your feelings, so she lied." It's a thought, but when I think about Lucas, it changes things.
"She and Lucas are friends."
"Lucas Elbert?"
"Yes. It looks like they are friends.
"But she obviously hasn't been to training," he says it like it's a fact. We run training sessions in the afternoon, so we would know if she went to training.
I tap my fingers on the wheel while I think about how I might not know everyone in my pack. Not possible. I've been to every event and gathering. I train the pack warriors in the afternoon, and I make sure to eat at least one meal a day in the Rudelhaus dining room. And I have never, not once, seen that girl.
There was no way I could have forgotten her, not with those eyes and hair. Those eyes that looked right through me were almost as shocking as the electric shock I felt when our hands touched. What was that? I think it was the mate bond, but I'm not old enough to feel it yet, and I don't think she is either. So, what was it?
Jonas Weber says, "So, during training this afternoon, ask Lucas who she is."
I look at him like, "Are you kidding me?" "First and foremost, I'm an Alpha." I don't have to chase girls; they come to me. Second, I don't need to ask a warrior about a she-wolf. "I'll figure it out on my own."
Jonas Weber shrugs his shoulders. "Okay, but I'll keep an eye out." And if you get the chance tomorrow, point her out again so I can see her face. I might know her.
I look at my friend for life. "Thanks, man. I appreciate it." I put my fist out and we fist bump.
"Hey, I'm here for you. All the time. Now let's go kick some warrior butt.
…………….
After training, I go back to my room to take a shower before going back down to the dining room. I run into my mom on my way down.
"Adolf, how was your day, sweetie?"
I bend down to kiss my mom because she's only 5'6". "Good mom." I'm going to dinner now. She puts her hand on my cheek to keep me from moving as I walk past her.
"I'm going to Lilli Neumann's memorial tonight to put fresh flowers there." Will you come with me again since your dad is having dinner with Klaus Neumann?
She asks like it's a question. As if I haven't been going to Lilli Neumann's memorial every week for the past 13 years to put fresh flowers there. My dad won't let me go with him to see Klaus Neumann because he says it's "their time." I understand, but I still want to show my respect for the man who did so much for my family. I'd like to meet his daughter too. I know she takes care of him, and since Lilli Neumann died and they only had one child, she is probably his main caregiver. When I become Alpha, she will be one of my pack members. I want her to know that my mother and father have treated her with respect, and that I will always be there for her. I will make sure of that. I owe them money that I can never pay back, but I will make sure that the Neumanns always have what they need.
I look at my mom. "You ask that like it's a real question, and I might say no." I give her a look of surprise.
She pats my arm and laughs. "You are just like your dad." "Eat first, then we'll leave."
I give her a real hug by wrapping my arms around her. "Okay, Mom, I'll see you later."
I go down to the dining room. One wall has a huge buffet of food on it. I take a plate and look around to see if the little brown-haired girl is here. I am not surprised, but I am let down when I don't see her. I see some of our warriors eating dinner, so I go over to join them.
