Chapter One: Deposed and Abandoned
Diana I stood before the elders of the pack, their accusing gazes searing into my soul, a silent condemnation hanging heavy in the air. Norman, the stern and unyielding figure of authority, who was also the oldest elder of the pack, sat opposite me with an arrogant aura, his voice cutting through the tense atmosphere like a blade. "Diana, admit to your crime and choose wisely, while we still offer you the grace to do so." His voice was unwavering as his eyes pierced through mine with an expression that showed his disdain for me. I couldn't help but feel a surge of anger rising in me at his audacity. Who were they to talk down on me like I wasn't their Alpha? How dare they treat me like this? With a deep breath, I straightened my posture, holding onto the remnants of my pride. "Spare me your ultimatums, Norman. I am Alpha, and you will address me with the respect I am due," I retorted, my voice carrying a hint of the aggression that lay dormant in me. Gina, another elder of the pack, burst into a loud laugh, her cruel and mocking laughter reverberating through the room, sending a shiver down my spine. She had a reputation for being very sharp-tongued, and ever since I became Alpha, she had never once shown me an iota of respect. "Watch your tongue, Diana. Your life is in our hands now, and we're offering you a chance at redemption. Don't get too cocky, and just take it." Gina's voice dripped with malice, her eyes not leaving mine. I clenched my fists at my sides, struggling to maintain my composure in the face of their accusations. How could they so easily forget all that I had sacrificed for this pack and all the battles I had fought to keep us safe? After my father died in a battle with a rival pack, I had to take over as Alpha at the age of eighteen, and for the last three years, I've done nothing but fight to protect my pack and keep them safe. But because I was a woman and also not the puppet they thought I'd be, the elders of the pack hated me and have been trying to get rid of me. A frustrated sigh escaped my lips, the weight of their disdain pressing down on my shoulders like a heavy burden. I couldn't believe that my position as Alpha was being threatened because of something I had no control over, and it made my blood boil that I was being subjected to such humiliation. The sudden summons to the interrogation room had caught me off guard, my own guards leading me to face the wrath of the elders. The very people I had sworn to protect now stood as my accusers, their eyes filled with mistrust and disdain. "Why am I being subjected to this scrutiny? Why have you all summoned me here against my will?" I asked bravely, my voice tinged with a mix of anger and disbelief. Norman's gaze bore into mine, his features set in a mask of unbending resolve. "You have been accused of fraternizing with a forbidden bloodline, jeopardizing the very core of our pack's beliefs," he accused. "In simpler words, you're mated to the son of a witch, and you know very well that witches and their descendants are strictly forbidden in our pack." I squared my shoulders, trying to maintain my composure despite the anger coursing through my veins. I looked at each person in turn, trying to gauge their intentions and figure out a way to turn the situation in my favor. "I will not apologize for who I am mated to," I stated firmly, my voice echoing off the walls of the room. "Norman, Gina, you both know the bond between mates is sacred and cannot be broken, and for the goddess to send him to me simply means he's mine to have, and you can't change that. I will not be bowing down to your petty demands." Norman's eyes flashed with fury, his lips curling into a sneer. "The laws of our pack clearly state that we do not associate with witches or their descendants. Your relationship with that man puts us all at risk. Are you willing to jeopardize the safety of our pack for your own selfish desires?" I felt a surge of anger at his words, but I pushed it down, focusing on the task at hand, which was getting out of this. "My mate is not a threat to our pack. He has proven himself time and time again to be loyal and trustworthy. I will not abandon him simply because of his bloodline." Conan, another elder, snorted derisively. "You are blinded by lust and foolishness, Diana. Open your eyes and accept your mistake before it's too late. The witch's son will bring nothing but destruction to our pack. You must choose him or us." I felt torn between my loyalty to my mate and my responsibility as Alpha. I knew that the elders held the power to strip me of my title if I didn't comply with their demands. But I also knew that I couldn't betray the one person who had always stood by my side. Elijah was my mate—the only person that I knew had my back no matter what. Everyone else in this pack, including my extended family, had it out for me. They all hated me, and now they wanted me to lose the one person who cared about me. Taking a deep breath, I met the elders' gaze with steely determination. "I will not abandon my mate. I will stand by him, but standing by him doesn't mean that I have to relinquish my title as Alpha. I will not abandon my mate, nor will I leave my pack!" The elders of the pack scoffed at me, exchanging a look of satisfaction, knowing that they had succeeded in their mission to oust me from power. "You've made your choice, Diana," Norman declared coldly. "And you leave us no choice, as you are hereby stripped of your title as Alpha of the Black Shadow Pack. You are banished from our lands, never to return, as you are no longer fit to lead this pack or be a part of it. That is final." I stood before the council of elders, a simmering rage burning in me as their words pierced through my heart like a blade. How dare they even consider stripping me of my title as Alpha and banishing me from the home I had protected with every fiber of my being? The audacity of their actions was beyond comprehension, and it made me feel both furious and powerless. "You have no right to banish me from my pack, from my home!" I bellowed, my voice ringing out with a fierce defiance that matched the rage that blazed in me. Norman met my gaze with a cold resolve. "You have defied our laws, betrayed the trust of your pack, and tarnished the name of our kind." His voice echoed through the chamber, each word a damning verdict that sealed my fate. I could sense it more intensely as their merciless eyes stared down at me. How could they so easily disregard all that I had sacrificed and all that I had fought for in the name of our pack? What did I ever do to them? My eyes scanned the room, catching the subtle signal from Rio, an elder whom I once trusted, and before I knew what was happening, the guards, my own guards, descended on me like a pack of ravenous wolves. They grabbed me with their hands, pulling me back and restraining me with a strength that belied their appearance. I struggled against their hold, the primal instinct of my wolf clawing at the surface, yearning to break free and defend itself from the unjust treatment we were being subjected to. But before I could muster a coherent thought, a searing pain shot through my neck—a pain that could only be caused by a needle. A wave of weakness swept over me instantly, draining me of my resolve and leaving me vulnerable. The guards proceeded to drag me across the bare floor, my body limp and unresponsive to their brutal manhandling. A strong sense of anger and defeat hit me all at once as I was forcibly removed from the chamber, the smug expressions on the elders' faces burning into my memory. As I was dragged away, the realization of my helplessness settled in, and a bitter taste soured in my mouth. The pack that I had once called family had turned against me, casting me out like some common criminal, unworthy of them. *** I stirred from the darkness that had enveloped me, my eyes blinking open slowly as I tried to make sense of my surroundings. The surrounding air was thick with a heavy fog of confusion, and my head was spinning with the remnants of the nightmare that had now become my reality. As I struggled to push myself up, I felt the cold sting of dirty water seeping into my clothes, and the damp ground beneath me was a harsh reminder of the cruelty that had been dealt to me. I looked around, the dim light of the moon casting a ghostly glow over the desolate streets where I had been abandoned. My pack had really cast me away, leaving me to fend for myself in a world that had turned its back on me. With a deep breath, I pushed myself up from the mire, and even though I had been abandoned by my pack, I knew where I needed to go. I still had my mate, Elijah, the only person who would stand by me through thick and thin. He was my only hope—the only person I could trust. Dragging my weakened body through the streets, ignoring the curious gazes that followed me, I made my way toward the town where Elijah resided. With each step, I could feel judgmental eyes on me, but I refused to pay them any attention. After what felt like an eternity of dragging myself through the streets, I finally arrived within sight of Elijah's small house. But as I drew closer, my eyes widened with shock and disbelief at the scene before me. Elijah and a woman, whom I assumed to be his sister, Ayana, were walking hand in hand, their expressions filled with a warmth and intimacy that sent a chill down my spine. My heart hammered in my chest as I watched them exchange loving glances, their closeness unnerving me in a way I could not explain. And then, my world shattered into a million pieces as I witnessed them hug each other, their lips meeting in a tender kiss that tore through me like a jagged blade. I stood there, rooted to the spot for a few long seconds, the air in my lungs evaporating, leaving me gasping for breath as I struggled to comprehend the depth of the betrayal that had been unveiled right before my eyes. And then, as if in a daze, I began to move towards them, the words tumbling from my lips before I could stop them. "Elijah... what... what is this? What's going on here?" My gaze flickered between them as I felt a mix of confusion and hurt. I watched as he turned towards me, the cold gleam in his eyes sending a shiver down my spine. Ayana's eyes widened in panic, her gaze darting between us as if caught red-handed. Elijah's response was like a knife to the heart, each word cutting deeper than anything else I had experienced today. He took Ayana's hands in his, the gesture a cruel mockery of our bond as mates. And then, with a chilling finality, he uttered the words that shattered the fragile remnants of hope I had left in me. "It's a good thing you're here, Diana. I'd like to introduce you to my wife, Ayana."
