"Don't look so surprised. Jack married you because he wants a child. He’s already paid you well, so sign the papers now!"
My lips couldn’t form any words after hearing the real purpose of this sudden marriage. Being sold and treated like an object was already painful enough, and now I was being used as a child-bearing machine for a wealthy family? I truly had no dignity left.
“Did you only marry me for a child?” I asked, seeking confirmation.
“To be precise, a son. You must bear a son,” Jack answered frankly.
I chuckled softly, gripping the pen tightly in my hand.
“You married a girl like me just for a child, even though you already have a wife?”
Jack didn’t answer my question; instead, he left the room, giving a deep look toward Ameera. I could sense the emotional tension between them.
“Are you infertile?”
Of course, my mind drifted to Ameera’s inadequacy. The woman who seemed almost perfect couldn’t have children.
“You’re here to give us a child! No need for questions—just sign the contract!”
Ameera shifted the topic, forcing me to sign the marriage contract. It would be easy to sign the paper, but if I eventually had a child, would I lose him and be separated from him? I couldn’t commit that crime.
“I don’t want to sign this agreement. Jack married me to have a child, and I have the right to fulfill my duty as a mother to my child. I cannot hand over the role of a mother to a woman who didn’t even give birth to him.”
Ameera was taken aback by my response. She yanked my hair forcefully and whispered with a sharp gaze.
“Do you think Jack will ever want to be your husband? A woman who was bought should know her place!” Ameera shouted.
Ameera thought her behavior would frighten me. On the contrary, her aggression only solidified my resolve. Verbal or physical abuse had become a daily occurrence, making me immune.
“What about a woman who can’t bear children but manipulates another woman to conceive? You’re the one crossing the line.”
Since that day, Ameera couldn’t stand seeing me near Jack. Even after the wedding, she adamantly forbade Jack from sleeping in my room. I didn’t mind Ameera’s behavior; the more she guarded Jack from me, the greater the chance I had to escape this sham marriage.
But Ameera’s efforts were in vain after Jack came to my room one night, restless, and asked me to sleep with him. Jack’s face looked so sad, his eyes filled with sorrow, making me uneasy.
He hugged me warmly and cried on my shoulder. At first, I didn’t react much, but after he kissed my neck and whispered softly, I lost control.
Rain fell at the same moment, drowning out my voice as Jack touched me. He handled me and directed me without resistance. We spent the night together until I lost track of what Jack had done to me.
The next morning, I woke up in my bed, my body drenched in sweat. When I tried to get up, pain surged through my body. The events of the night with Jack replayed in my mind, shocking me.
I looked at my body, flushed from Jack’s touch, and my hair was disheveled. Jack’s scent still lingered on me, making me uncomfortable. I quickly took a shower to prepare for breakfast.
But before I could reach the bathroom, Ameera barged into my room without permission, startling me.
“Why are you walking like that?” she snapped. She must have been in my room long enough to notice my steps.
“I’m just tired from yesterday’s wedding party,” I replied, hiding the truth.
Ameera’s expression showed disbelief. Her brow furrowed as she slowly approached me. Sensing she was getting closer, I took a few steps back, not wanting Jack’s scent to reach her.
“Why are you afraid? Did you sleep with Jack?”
Ameera’s voice rose a notch. If she knew Jack and I had been intimate, she would surely be furious. Though I knew there was nothing wrong between Jack and me.
“No, I just don’t want you to smell my scent. I didn’t get a chance to shower last night, so I must still smell of sweat.”
Ameera nodded slowly, then left my room. I wasn’t sure what she wanted from me, but she had certainly gotten something from me this morning.
I hurried to clean myself before Ameera could return to my room. Once I finished showering, I quickly headed downstairs for breakfast. But for some reason, I felt uneasy as I descended the stairs. I thought it was because I was still haunted by last night’s events with Jack, making me nauseous just thinking about it.
At the dining table, Jack’s deep gaze made me nervous. I tried to divert my attention to Ameera and act normally. But somehow, Jack’s breathing was so clear, making it hard for me to concentrate on eating.
“What are you thinking about? The soup spilled, and you’re just sitting there?” Ameera glared at me while handing me a napkin.
“Sorry, I’m just not focused,” I replied briefly.
“Is it because this is your first time eating with my husband Jack, with such a lavish meal? You must remember your role in this house.”
I don’t know why, but I hoped Jack would defend or stop Ameera from belittling me. At the very least, I wished he would show some concern after what happened between us last night. But it seemed I was still under the illusion of his sweet gestures and gentle touch, forgetting that I was a woman who had been bought.
Not wanting to get caught up in a morning argument, I decided to eat my breakfast. Despite my bad mood caused by Ameera’s words, I couldn’t pass up the delicious food in front of me. But as the clam soup was about to enter my mouth, I suddenly felt nauseous and wanted to vomit.
I ran from the dining table to the bathroom and threw up. My head suddenly spun, and my stomach kept contracting as if Jack’s hands were still there.
I spent a long time in the bathroom until Ameera came to me with her sharp gaze. She grabbed my hair tightly and demanded that I look her in the eyes.
“Did you really sleep with Jack?”
Ameera was definitely onto something. She quickly jumped to conclusions after visiting my room this morning and asking the same question.
“No, I’m just not feeling well,” I lied. I don’t know why I was afraid of Ameera finding out, and that she would treat me even worse.
“Liar—”
I closed my eyes when I saw Ameera’s hand swing, ready to slap me. But after a few seconds, I felt nothing, and when I opened my eyes, Jack had arrived, stopping Ameera’s hand.
“There’s no need to hurt her, she’s my wife too, Ameera.”
The words I had been waiting to hear since this morning. It felt like I was flying when Jack acknowledged me as his wife. But that only made Ameera hate me even more.
“Jack, I’m your wife! She’s just a woman you bought to bear a male heir. We agreed on this, that I’m the one in charge.”
I saw the calm in Jack’s eyes. He seemed to be hiding a heavy burden from Ameera. His large hand helped me stand tall, reminding me again of Jack’s touch.
“Jack? I’m jealous!” Ameera declared outright.
Frustrated, Ameera left us in the bathroom. Meanwhile, Jack remained silent, staring at my face, shocked by Ameera’s actions.
“Are you okay?”
My heart raced uncontrollably. It felt like there were flowers blooming in my stomach at that moment. His voice and gaze locked my thoughts.
“Yes, I’m just feeling nauseous. Maybe I’m not well today.”
I thought I found a ray of hope today. But after I said that, Jack handed me a wad of cash.
“Take this money, consider it payment for your service last night.”
