THE WOMAN HE BURIED TWICE 🥀 1
THE WOMAN HE BURIED TWICE Episode 1 — The Wife Who Came Back From The Dead Five years ago, Adrian Vale stood beside an open grave while rain poured over the black umbrella above his head, soaking the shoulders of his expensive suit and turning the freshly dug earth into thick, dark mud around his polished shoes, yet he did not seem to notice the cold, the rain, or the dozens of mourners standing silently behind him because all he could see was the coffin being lowered into the ground, the coffin that everyone had told him contained the woman he had loved more deeply than he had ever allowed himself to admit. Elena Vale had been declared dead after a terrible car accident on a lonely road outside the city, and although Adrian had demanded answers, demanded another examination, demanded to see her face for the final time, his powerful father had insisted that the injuries were too severe and that there was no reason to make the family suffer more than they already had. Adrian had believed him because grief had made him weak, and because the doctors, the police, and every official report had repeated the same cruel conclusion, Elena was dead, and nothing he could do would bring her back. He remembered the last time he had seen her alive more clearly than he remembered anything else in his life, because Elena had stood in the doorway of their bedroom that evening with her long hair falling over one shoulder and an expression on her face that had immediately told him something was wrong, even though she had tried to hide it behind a smile. She had asked him why he had been avoiding her all week, and Adrian had told her that his company was going through a difficult period and that he had too many problems to deal with, but Elena had not believed him because she had always been able to see through the cold expression he used to keep everyone away from him. She had walked closer, placed both hands against his chest, and quietly told him that whatever happened, she would never abandon him, and Adrian, who had spent most of his life believing that love was a weakness people used against one another, had finally lowered his pride and pulled her into his arms. He had kissed her forehead and promised that nothing would ever separate them, not knowing that within twenty-four hours he would be standing beside her grave, wondering how he could possibly continue living in a world where she no longer existed. The years that followed changed Adrian into a man almost nobody recognized, because the warm moments that had once appeared in his eyes disappeared beneath anger, exhaustion, and an obsession with becoming powerful enough that nobody would ever be able to take anything from him again. He became the youngest chairman of Vale International, expanded the family empire, defeated competitors who had once laughed at his ambitions, and built a reputation as a ruthless businessman who never forgave betrayal, but none of his success mattered when he returned to the mansion every night and found Elena's favorite chair untouched beside the window. He had never allowed anyone to remove her belongings, and even after five years, her books remained on the shelf, her perfume remained inside the dressing room, and the small silver necklace she had worn on their wedding day remained inside the locked drawer beside his bed because Adrian could not bring himself to throw away the last pieces of the woman he had buried. On a stormy evening in the fifth year after Elena's death, Adrian was leaving a private business meeting when a woman hurried across the crowded pavement directly in front of him, causing one of his security guards to step forward immediately, but Adrian stopped the guard with a single movement because something about the stranger had caught his attention. She was wearing a simple dark coat, her hair was slightly wet from the rain, and she had one hand pressed against her chest as though she were struggling to breathe, but none of those things mattered because when she lifted her face, Adrian forgot how to move. The woman had Elena's eyes, Elena's lips, Elena's small scar above her eyebrow, and the exact same expression Elena used to make whenever she was frightened but refused to show it, and for several seconds Adrian could only stare at her while his heart seemed to stop inside his chest. The woman noticed him watching her and immediately stepped backward, her brows drawing together in confusion as she wondered why a complete stranger was looking at her as though he had just seen a ghost, but Adrian moved toward her before he could think about what he was doing. “Elena,” he whispered, and the woman froze because there was something in his voice that made her realize this was not an ordinary mistake. “I'm sorry,” she said cautiously, her eyes moving from Adrian to the security guards surrounding him, “but I think you have mistaken me for someone else.” Adrian stared at her face, desperately searching for any explanation that could make sense of what he was seeing, but the woman standing before him was not merely similar to Elena, because she was Elena, the woman whose funeral he had attended, the woman whose grave he had visited every year, and the woman he had spent five years believing was dead. “You're Elena Vale,” Adrian said, his voice becoming harsher as disbelief turned into desperation, but the woman shook her head and took another step away from him. “My name is Mara Bennett,” she replied, and the sound of that unfamiliar name made something inside Adrian crack because Elena had never been Mara, not once, not in any memory he possessed. Before he could question her further, Mara suddenly touched the silver necklace around her neck, and Adrian's eyes immediately dropped to it because he recognized the pendant hanging against her skin. It was the necklace he had given Elena on their first anniversary, the one Elena had once told him she would never remove because it represented the promise he had made to her on the night they married. Adrian reached toward the pendant, but Mara quickly stepped back and covered it with her hand, her expression becoming guarded as she asked him why he knew her name, and Adrian found himself unable to answer because his mind was drowning in impossible questions. If this woman was Mara Bennett, why did she have Elena's face, Elena's necklace, Elena's scar, and the same tiny habit of touching her necklace whenever she became nervous? If Elena had truly died five years ago, then who was the woman standing in front of him, and whose body had been placed inside the coffin he had watched disappear beneath the earth? Then Mara looked directly into his eyes, and something changed inside her expression as though a door had suddenly opened inside her mind, revealing a memory she had spent years trying to reach. Her fingers tightened around the necklace, her breathing became uneven, and she whispered a sentence that made Adrian's blood run cold because those were words only Elena could have known. “Adrian,” she said quietly, “why do I remember you telling me not to trust your father?” Adrian stopped breathing. For five years, he had believed he was the only person left who remembered his wife. Now the dead woman was standing in front of him, and she remembered everything he had been trying to forget. .
