The Rejection Ceremony

1120 Words
‎ ‎ ‎The silence that followed Ryder's words was deafening. ‎ ‎"I reject Elara Ashwood as my fated mate." ‎ ‎For one endless heartbeat, no one moved. ‎ ‎No one breathed. ‎ ‎Then chaos erupted. ‎ ‎"Did he just reject his mate?" ‎ ‎"In front of everyone?" ‎ ‎"She'll never recover from this..." ‎ ‎"How embarrassing." ‎ ‎Whispers spread through the Moon Hall like wildfire, each one cutting deeper than the last. ‎ ‎Elara couldn't hear them all. ‎ ‎She only heard the sound of her own heart breaking. ‎ ‎The warmth that had filled her chest moments ago twisted into unbearable pain. ‎ ‎It felt as though invisible claws were ripping through her soul. ‎ ‎Her knees buckled. ‎ ‎She would have fallen if the shattered pieces of the Moon Crystal hadn't caught her attention. ‎ ‎Tiny fragments of glowing silver scattered across the sacred platform. ‎ ‎The impossible had happened. ‎ ‎No one in living memory had ever seen the Moon Crystal break. ‎ ‎The High Priestess stared in horror. ‎ ‎"This... this is a bad omen." ‎ ‎The Elders exchanged uneasy glances. ‎ ‎Even Alpha Gareth Blackthorn looked shaken. ‎ ‎"Ryder." ‎ ‎His voice thundered through the hall. ‎ ‎"Take back your words." ‎ ‎Ryder stood motionless. ‎ ‎His expression remained cold, almost emotionless. ‎ ‎"I meant every one of them." ‎ ‎A murmur rippled through the crowd. ‎ ‎Alpha Gareth descended the marble steps until he stood before his son. ‎ ‎"You know the laws of the Moon Goddess." ‎ ‎"I do." ‎ ‎"Then you know rejecting a fated mate brings consequences." ‎ ‎"I'll bear them." ‎ ‎The Alpha's eyes narrowed. ‎ ‎"And if your pack bears them with you?" ‎ ‎For the first time, something flickered across Ryder's face. ‎ ‎It disappeared so quickly Elara wondered if she had imagined it. ‎ ‎Guilt. ‎ ‎No... ‎ ‎Fear. ‎ ‎But before anyone could question him, Ryder looked directly at Elara. ‎ ‎His gaze was unreadable. ‎ ‎"I'm sorry it had to be you." ‎ ‎The words struck harder than the rejection itself. ‎ ‎Had to be? ‎ ‎What did that mean? ‎ ‎Before she could ask, Beta Marcus stepped forward. ‎ ‎"The ceremony must continue." ‎ ‎His voice was calm. ‎ ‎Too calm. ‎ ‎Almost as though he'd expected this. ‎ ‎Elara noticed the brief glance he exchanged with Ryder. ‎ ‎A silent understanding. ‎ ‎Something wasn't right. ‎ ‎Someone knew this would happen. ‎ ‎Her wolf whimpered inside her. ‎ ‎She pressed a trembling hand against her chest. ‎ ‎The bond was still there. ‎ ‎Broken. ‎ ‎Bleeding. ‎ ‎But not gone. ‎ ‎The High Priestess lifted her staff. ‎ ‎"Elara Ashwood..." ‎ ‎Her voice softened. ‎ ‎"By the ancient laws, you are released from this ceremony." ‎ ‎Released. ‎ ‎Such a gentle word for complete devastation. ‎ ‎The crowd parted as Elara stepped down from the platform. ‎ ‎No one reached for her. ‎ ‎No one offered comfort. ‎ ‎They simply watched. ‎ ‎Some with pity. ‎ ‎Others with relief. ‎ ‎A few with cruel smiles. ‎ ‎She had gone from future Luna to public disgrace in less than five minutes. ‎ ‎As she reached the massive wooden doors of Moon Hall, a voice called after her. ‎ ‎"Elara." ‎ ‎She turned. ‎ ‎Mira pushed through the crowd and threw her arms around her. ‎ ‎"I'm so sorry." ‎ ‎Elara finally broke. ‎ ‎Tears streamed down her face as she clung to her only friend. ‎ ‎"It hurts." ‎ ‎"I know." ‎ ‎"I can't breathe." ‎ ‎"You don't have to stay here." ‎ ‎Mira wiped away her tears. ‎ ‎"Come home with me." ‎ ‎Before Elara could answer, another voice echoed through the hall. ‎ ‎"She has no home." ‎ ‎Everyone turned. ‎ ‎Elder Cedric, the oldest member of the council, rose slowly to his feet. ‎ ‎"The Moon Crystal has shattered." ‎ ‎He pointed toward Elara. ‎ ‎"Our ancestors warned us that only a cursed mate could bring such a disaster." ‎ ‎The hall erupted. ‎ ‎"Cursed?" ‎ ‎"Was she hiding it?" ‎ ‎"I knew there was something strange about her." ‎ ‎Mira stepped protectively in front of Elara. ‎ ‎"That's enough!" ‎ ‎But the accusations kept coming. ‎ ‎"She'll bring ruin to Silver Fang!" ‎ ‎"She angered the Moon Goddess!" ‎ ‎"Drive her out!" ‎ ‎Elara stared at the faces she'd known her entire life. ‎ ‎The baker who used to give her sweet bread. ‎ ‎The healer who had bandaged her scraped knees as a child. ‎ ‎The families she'd laughed with during every Moon Festival. ‎ ‎Not one of them defended her. ‎ ‎Not one. ‎ ‎Then, above the shouting, Alpha Gareth raised his hand. ‎ ‎"Silence!" ‎ ‎The hall obeyed. ‎ ‎His face was grim as he looked at Elara. ‎ ‎"The council will meet before sunrise." ‎ ‎His next words chilled her to the bone. ‎ ‎"Until then... Elara Ashwood is confined to her quarters." ‎ ‎Confined? ‎ ‎As if she were a criminal. ‎ ‎Two warriors stepped forward. ‎ ‎They didn't meet her eyes. ‎ ‎"We're sorry," one whispered. ‎ ‎"Please come with us." ‎ ‎Elara nodded numbly. ‎ ‎As they escorted her through the rain-soaked streets, she couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching her. ‎ ‎High above the village, hidden among the towering pines beyond the border... ‎ ‎A massive black wolf stood silently on the cliff. ‎ ‎Its molten-gold eyes never left Elara. ‎ ‎It took one slow step forward. ‎ ‎Then another. ‎ ‎Finally, it lifted its head toward the blood-red moon. ‎ ‎A chilling howl echoed across every pack in the kingdom. ‎ ‎The wolves of Silver Fang froze. ‎ ‎The Elders turned pale. ‎ ‎Even Alpha Gareth's face lost all color. ‎ ‎Only one creature possessed a howl like that. ‎ ‎The Rival Alpha. ‎ ‎And he was coming
