The Girl No One Wanted
Rain fell in silver sheets over the Silver Fang Pack, washing the stone streets clean as wolves and humans alike hurried toward the Moon Hall.
Tonight was the most sacred night of the year.
The Moon Bonding Ceremony.
The night the Moon Goddess revealed fated mates.
Laughter echoed through the village square, but none of it belonged to Elara Ashwood.
She stood alone beneath the ancient moon oak, smoothing invisible wrinkles from the sleeves of her simple ivory dress.
"Stop fidgeting."
Her best friend, Mira, adjusted the silver ribbon woven into Elara's dark chestnut hair before stepping back with a satisfied smile.
"There. Perfect."
Elara let out a nervous laugh.
"I don't feel perfect."
"No one does before they meet their mate."
Mira squeezed her hand.
"But when he looks at you..."
She grinned.
"...you'll forget you were ever afraid."
Elara tried to believe her.
Ever since she was a child, she'd dreamed about this night.
She imagined a strong Alpha smiling as though she'd always been his missing piece.
She imagined belonging.
Being loved.
Having a family of her own.
For just one night, she allowed herself to believe the Moon Goddess had written something beautiful into her future.
A horn echoed across the valley.
The ceremony had begun.
Hundreds of pack members poured into Moon Hall, a magnificent circular arena carved into the mountainside. White marble pillars reached toward the stars, and glowing moonstones lit every step leading to the center.
At the far end stood Alpha Gareth Blackthorn, ruler of the Silver Fang Pack, his silver cloak billowing behind him.
Beside him stood his son.
Future Alpha Ryder Blackthorn.
Every whispered conversation died the moment he stepped forward.
Tall.
Broad-shouldered.
Jet-black hair.
Piercing blue eyes that missed nothing.
Power rolled off him like a living storm.
He was every girl's dream.
Elara had never expected him to be hers.
She lowered her gaze before he could notice her staring.
One by one, young wolves stepped onto the sacred platform.
Some laughed through happy tears.
Others cried as they found their destined partners.
The Moon Goddess blessed each pair beneath the glowing Moon Crystal suspended above the arena.
Elara's heartbeat grew louder.
Her name hadn't been called yet.
Finally...
"The next candidate..."
The High Priestess raised her staff.
"Elara Ashwood."
A strange silence settled over the arena.
Elara walked forward, every heartbeat echoing in her ears.
She placed her trembling hand upon the Moon Crystal.
Its pale glow flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then—
A brilliant silver light exploded through the hall.
Gasps erupted from every direction.
The crystal had never shone this brightly.
The High Priestess stared, her face drained of color.
"What...?"
The silver light stretched across the arena like threads of moonlight until it wrapped around one man.
Alpha Ryder.
The future Alpha froze.
His eyes locked onto Elara's.
For one impossible heartbeat, the entire world disappeared.
Heat flooded through Elara's chest.
Her wolf stirred for the first time in her life.
**Mate.**
The whispered word echoed inside her soul.
Tears blurred her vision.
It was him.
The Moon Goddess had chosen him.
A smile trembled onto her lips.
Ryder didn't smile back.
Instead...
His jaw tightened.
Something unreadable flashed through his eyes.
Fear.
Shock.
Or regret.
Elara's smile slowly faded.
Why was he looking at her like that?
Before she could speak, Ryder took one deliberate step toward her.
The bond between them pulsed again.
The crowd held its breath.
Elara's heart soared.
This was the moment she'd dreamed about her entire life.
Ryder stopped only inches away.
His voice rang through the silent hall.
Cold.
Sharp.
Without a trace of warmth.
"...Impossible."
Every smile in the arena vanished.
Ryder's gaze never left hers as he uttered words that made the air itself feel frozen.
"I refuse to accept this bond."
A ripple of disbelief spread through the crowd.
The High Priestess stepped forward.
"Future Alpha... think carefully. The Moon Goddess—"
"I said..."
His Alpha aura burst through the hall, forcing dozens of wolves to lower their heads.
"...I refuse."
Elara couldn't breathe.
The warmth in her chest became agony.
She looked into Ryder's eyes, silently begging him to tell her this was a mistake.
That he was frightened.
That he would laugh and pull her into his arms.
Instead...
He leaned close enough for only her to hear.
"There is no future where I make you my Luna."
Her heart cracked.
Then, before the entire Silver Fang Pack...
Ryder raised his voice.
"I reject Elara Ashwood as my fated mate."
The Moon Crystal shattered.
And somewhere beyond the mountains...
A pair of molten-gold eyes snapped open.
A deep, commanding voice echoed through the darkness.
"...I found you."
