The Shadow Forest lived up to its name.
Ancient trees stretched toward the sky, their twisted branches blocking the morning sun. A thick mist coiled around Elara's feet as she walked deeper into the wilderness, clutching the small leather pouch Mira had given her.
Every snapping twig made her heart race.
Every distant howl reminded her she no longer belonged anywhere.
She had no pack.
No mate.
No home.
Only the endless forest ahead.
Hours passed.
Her stomach growled with hunger, and her feet ached from walking.
She stopped beside a narrow stream, cupping cool water in her trembling hands.
For a brief moment, the icy water eased the burning ache in her chest.
Then...
A low growl echoed behind her.
Elara froze.
Another growl answered from the left.
Then another.
Slowly, she turned.
Three wolves emerged from the undergrowth.
Massive.
Scarred.
Their yellow eyes glowed with hunger.
Rogues.
Her breath caught in her throat.
Every child in Silver Fang knew what rogue wolves did to lone travelers.
They never left witnesses.
The largest wolf stepped closer, its lips curling into a vicious snarl.
Elara instinctively backed away.
"I'm not looking for trouble," she whispered.
The wolf lunged.
She stumbled backward just in time, crashing against a fallen tree.
Pain shot through her shoulder.
The second rogue circled behind her, cutting off her escape.
The third let out a chilling howl.
More were coming.
"No..."
Elara searched desperately for something—anything—she could use as a weapon.
Her fingers found only a broken branch.
The rogues laughed in cruel, human voices.
"A little she-wolf."
"Easy prey."
"She'll fetch a good price."
Price?
Confusion flashed through Elara's fear.
Before she could think, the largest rogue shifted into his human form.
A heavily scarred man with cruel eyes grinned at her.
"The boss will be pleased."
He reached for her.
Elara swung the branch with all her strength.
It snapped harmlessly against his arm.
The rogue laughed.
"My turn."
He grabbed her wrist.
His grip was like iron.
Panic surged through her.
She kicked.
Struggled.
Screamed.
No one would hear her.
No one was coming.
Then...
The forest fell silent.
Even the birds stopped singing.
The rogues stiffened.
One of them slowly turned toward the trees.
"No..."
His voice trembled.
"It can't be..."
Heavy footsteps echoed through the mist.
Slow.
Measured.
Unhurried.
A tall figure emerged from the shadows.
Black boots.
A long black coat.
Broad shoulders.
Jet-black hair stirred by the wind.
When he lifted his head, molten-gold eyes pierced the darkness.
The rogues immediately released Elara.
One dropped to his knees.
"The... the Alpha..."
Another backed away in terror.
"We didn't know this was your territory."
The stranger didn't answer.
His gaze remained fixed on Elara.
She couldn't explain it.
Those golden eyes should have frightened her.
Instead...
They made her feel strangely safe.
The scarred rogue swallowed hard.
"We'll leave."
Still no response.
The silence became unbearable.
Finally, the man spoke.
"You touched her."
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
The rogue forced a nervous laugh.
"It was only—"
He never finished.
The stranger moved.
Elara didn't even see him cross the distance.
One heartbeat he stood ten meters away.
The next...
He had the rogue suspended in the air by his throat.
The remaining rogues gasped.
Golden eyes blazed with terrifying fury.
"I gave one rule."
His voice shook the forest.
"Never touch what belongs to me."
Belongs...?
Elara's heart skipped.
She had never seen this man before.
Why would he say that?
The rogue desperately clawed at the Alpha's hand.
"P-please..."
A sickening crack echoed through the trees.
The rogue's body fell lifelessly to the ground.
The other two fled without looking back.
The Alpha made no effort to chase them.
He simply watched them disappear before turning his full attention to Elara.
For several long seconds, neither of them spoke.
Then he stepped closer.
Elara's pulse raced.
He stopped just a few feet away.
Close enough for her to notice the faint silver scar crossing his jaw.
Close enough to see something unexpected in those fierce golden eyes.
Not hatred.
Not pity.
Relief.
As though he had been searching for her for a very long time.
He slowly removed his coat and draped it over her trembling shoulders.
His scent surrounded her—cedar, rain, and wild pine.
Warm.
Comforting.
Dangerously comforting.
Without breaking eye contact, he spoke the words that would change Elara's life forever.
"I've finally found you."
