The Ash of the World
The sky above the Blood Moon Pack did not bleed red; it burned ash.
I lay chained to the obsidian altar, the cold iron biting deeply into my wrists, watching the world I had spent my entire youth protecting fracture into a million pieces. Cracks filled with molten magma veined across the earth, swallowing the very packhouse I once called home. Tornadoes of dark energy ripped through the sky, shredding the clouds.
The apocalypse had arrived, just as the ancient texts foretold. But the texts had lied about one thing: I wasn't the one who failed to stop it.
"Why, Caleb?" My voice was a choked whisper, raw from screaming, tasting the metallic tang of my own blood. "I gave you my magic. I gave you my people's allegiance. I became your Luna... I loved you."
Alpha Caleb didn't even look at me. He stood at the edge of the sacrificial circle, his hand wrapped firmly around the waist of Elena—the elite she-wolf warrior he had always sworn was 'just a childhood friend.'
"And you played your part beautifully, my dear human Saintess," Caleb sneered, his amber eyes reflecting the dying world. He adjusted the collar of his alpha cloak, looking down at me as if I were nothing more than a stepped-on insect. "But a human can never truly rule wolves. You were a battery, Aria. A key to unlock the power of the end times. And now that the apocalypse is here... your battery life is empty."
Elena let out a sharp, mocking laugh, her fingers tracing a pattern over Caleb’s chest—the chest I used to rest my head against. "Did you really think he loved you, Aria? A fragile, magic-bleeding human? Caleb only tolerated your touch because your saintess aura masked his dark ambitions from the High Council. You paved our way to the throne. You should thank us."
"You monsters," I choked out. The obsidian altar beneath me began to glow with a violent, crimson light. My life force was draining, channeled directly into the cracks in the earth. The agony was blinding, like hot acid pouring through my veins.
Caleb raised his silver ceremonial dagger, the blade gleaming with stolen sacred magic. "Goodbye, Aria. Your death ensures our eternity."
He plunged the blade into my chest.
Pain exploded through my chest, blinding and absolute. But as my blood spilled onto the altar, the sky didn't just burn—it shattered like glass. A deafening, primal roar shook the very tectonic plates of the earth, a sound so terrifying it made Caleb and Elena drop to their knees, their hands over their ears.
From the deepest chasm of the splitting earth, a figure rose.
The forbidden Lycan King.
He was magnificent and terrifying, cloaked in shifting shadows and raw, destructive energy. Caleb scrambled backward in the dirt, his face turning pale as he realized too late that he couldn't control the god he had awakened. With a casual, indifferent flick of his wrist, the Lycan King sent a wave of dark pressure rippling outward. Caleb and Elena were flung into the crumbling, magma-filled abyss. They didn't even have time to scream before the darkness swallowed them whole.
I closed my eyes, letting out a ragged breath. Good, I thought bitterly. At least they burn with me.
I waited for the monster to tear me apart next. The world was ending. The sky was falling.
But instead of claws, I felt a heavy, trembling hand gently cup my blood-stained cheek.
I forced my heavy eyelids open. The Lycan King was kneeling over me. Up close, he didn't look like a mindless monster. His features were strikingly handsome, carved from marble, though shadows bled from his skin. His eyes—a piercing, hypnotic silver—were filled not with rage, but with a devastating, ancient grief.
"I was too late," he whispered, his voice vibrating through the very fabric of my fading soul. "I am always too late."
As the world collapsed into absolute darkness around us, he leaned down. His lips met mine in a desperate, fiercely possessive, soul-shattering kiss.
Magic—pure, chaotic, and terrifyingly warm—flooded from his mouth into my dying body. It didn't heal my flesh, but it wrapped around my soul, binding our fates together as reality dissolved into nothingness.
"I will find you in the next life," his voice echoed in the void of my mind, anchoring me against the pull of death. "Even if I have to burn the world down again to reach you."
