Chapter one: THE HOUSE THAT CHASED EVERY NANNY AWAY
The iron gates creaked open with a slow, eerie groan. Emily Carter tightened her grip on the handle of her worn suitcase as she stared at the enormous mansion before her. It looked less like a family home and more like a private palace. Marble fountains sparkled beneath the afternoon sun, luxury cars lined the cobblestone driveway, and perfectly manicured gardens stretched as far as the eye could see. Most people would have admired its beauty. Emily only felt a cold knot tighten in her stomach. Something about the estate felt... wrong. "Good luck," the taxi driver muttered, dropping her suitcase onto the driveway. "Thank you," Emily replied with a polite smile. The driver hesitated before shaking his head. "No," he said quietly. "You're really going to need it." Before Emily could ask what he meant, he jumped back into his taxi and sped through the gates as though escaping from danger. She watched the car disappear before releasing a slow breath. She desperately needed this job. Her younger brother's hospital bills had drained every cent she had. Their landlord had already given them one final warning, and another missed payment would leave them homeless. At twenty-three, with little experience and too many responsibilities, this was the only family willing to hire her—and the salary was enough to save her family. Failure wasn't an option. Straightening her inexpensive blazer, she walked toward the enormous oak doors. Before she could knock, they swung open. A middle-aged butler stood there in an immaculate black suit. "You must be Miss Emily Carter," he said gently. "My name is Alfred." His weary eyes lingered on her for a moment, as though he wanted to say something important. Instead, he sighed. "Please... follow me." --- The inside of the mansion was breathtaking. Crystal chandeliers glittered overhead while priceless paintings decorated the towering walls. Every piece of furniture screamed wealth. Yet the house felt strangely lifeless. No laughter. No music. No conversation. Only the echo of Emily's footsteps against polished marble. As they crossed the grand hallway, Emily glanced toward the sweeping staircase leading upstairs. A strange chill crawled down her spine. For a split second, she could have sworn someone was watching her. When she looked again, the corridor was empty. Alfred gently cleared his throat. "This way, Miss." He stopped before a pair of polished double doors. "Mr. Blackwood is waiting." --- Inside the office, a tall man stood with his back to the room, looking out through floor-to-ceiling windows. "So..." His deep voice cut through the silence. "You're the new nanny." "Yes, sir." Only then did he turn around. Emily recognized him instantly. Ethan Blackwood. One of the youngest billionaire businessmen in the country. His sharp features belonged on the cover of a magazine, yet there wasn't a trace of warmth in his expression. His eyes were cold enough to freeze the room. He walked calmly toward his mahogany desk. "I'll save us both some time," he said. "My children are... difficult." Emily offered a reassuring smile. "Children usually just need patience, Mr. Blackwood." For several long seconds, Ethan simply stared at her. Then he laughed. It wasn't a laugh of amusement. It sounded almost... sympathetic. "I've hired twenty-nine nannies over the past two years." He opened a leather file. "The shortest lasted four hours." He turned another page. "The longest survived three weeks." Emily blinked. "They can't possibly be that—" CRASH! A porcelain vase exploded against the wall barely inches from her shoulder. She jumped back. A baseball rolled lazily across the polished floor. Ethan didn't even flinch. He calmly closed the file. "They're home." For the briefest moment, something flashed across his face. Not anger. Not embarrassment. Something that looked strangely like guilt. Then it vanished. --- The front doors burst open. Three children stormed into the mansion like a miniature hurricane. The oldest, fifteen-year-old Jason, casually spun a football on one finger. Beside him walked thirteen-year-old Lily, chewing bubble gum while lazily twirling a pair of heavy craft scissors. Eight-year-old Noah dragged an incredibly realistic toy snake behind him. The three froze the instant they saw Emily. Jason smirked. "Oh." "They found another one." Lily folded her arms. "She won't last." Noah pretended to think very hard. "I give her..." He tapped his chin. "...until dinner." Emily smiled warmly. "Hello. I'm Emily, and I—" The children exchanged a quick glance. Jason's grin widened. Emily suddenly had the unmistakable feeling she had walked straight into a trap. "NOW!" Everything happened at once. A bucket hidden above the doorway tipped over. Ice-cold water drenched Emily from head to toe. Before she could even wipe her eyes, a concealed pressure pad beneath her feet released a cloud of white flour straight into her face. POP! A bag of colorful craft feathers burst from the ceiling, drifting down around her like ridiculous snow. Five seconds. That was all it took. Her neat blazer was soaked. Flour covered her hair. Feathers clung stubbornly to her clothes. She looked less like a professional nanny and more like a very confused chicken. The children erupted into uncontrollable laughter. Even two maids standing nearby quickly looked away, struggling not to laugh themselves. From the office doorway, Ethan watched silently. He wasn't watching the prank. He was watching Emily. Waiting for the exact moment she gave up—just like every nanny before her. Jason folded his arms triumphantly. "So..." "Are you quitting now..." "...or after lunch?" Silence. The entire foyer seemed to stop breathing. Every previous nanny had reacted the same way. Some cried. Some screamed. One threw her shoes at Jason. Another threatened to call the police. Emily did none of those things. She calmly wiped flour from her eyelashes. Adjusted her ruined blazer. Picked up the overturned bucket. Placed it neatly beside the umbrella stand. Then she looked directly at the children. A gentle smile spread across her face. Oddly enough... That smile was far more frightening than anger. "Are you quite finished?" she asked softly. The laughter died instantly. Jason frowned. Lily slowly lowered her scissors. Even Noah stopped smiling. Something about this woman felt... different. Emily folded her hands behind her back. "Because I haven't officially started my shift yet." For the first time in years, the Blackwood children had no clever response. Jason searched her face for fear. There wasn't any. Lily expected tears. None came. Noah waited for her to storm out. She didn't even take a step toward the door. Instead, she stood there with the quiet confidence of someone who had survived battles far greater than three spoiled children. For just a second, Jason's confident smile disappeared. Deep inside, a thought he refused to admit crossed his mind. She might actually stay. --- Far above them... Beyond the luxurious hallways... Past a locked staircase that no servant was ever allowed to climb... A single red light blinked inside a hidden monitoring room. Dozens of security screens illuminated the darkness. Every camera displayed the same person. Emily Carter. A shadowy figure sat motionless before the monitors. Watching. Waiting. Slowly, a smile spread across the stranger's face. At last, they whispered into the darkness— "She's finally here."
