Chapter 1
The race had just ended, and reporters and photographers packed tightly against the metal barricades.
"Kane, I heard that five years ago, your former team dropped you after an eye injury. Now that you've won the championship again, what would you like to say to your former team?"
"I heard that your fiancée accompanied and cared for you throughout your entire recovery. Is she the driving force behind your return to the track?"
Questions came flooding in.
I stood to one side, my smile strained, my nails digging deep into my palms.
Suddenly, Noah, my senior colleague, instructed me, "Wren, something's come up on my end. Take the top three riders through the private passage to the indoor press room, and brief the winner on the upcoming exclusive interview process."
I had no choice but to hurry to his side to lead the way, quietly walking him through the interview schedule.
Hearing my voice, Kane suddenly asked, "Your voice sounds familiar. Have we met?"
I immediately denied it, "I'm just an intern reporter. How could I possibly know you?"
Kane said nothing more. He simply looked at me meaningfully, then set off along the route I'd indicated toward the press hall.
In three years, Kane had changed almost beyond recognition.
He had grown taller, his once slight, boyish frame now broader.
His features were more angular and striking.
Those once misty eyes were now cold and detached.
When he passed by, he carried a cool, woody scent.
It was a familiar scent.
I froze on the spot, watching Kane walk toward the center of the interview area, a bitter ache in my chest.
The two years I spent by his side were the lowest point of Kane's life.
His team had cut him loose, and the car accident had blinded him. He had no idea what I looked like.
Better this way.
Inside the interview studio, the lights were set, and the interview began.
Kane sat onstage, fingers interlaced beneath his chin, calmly surveying the room.
He fielded questions from the reporters with ease.
Suddenly, the side door by the stage swung open.
Ruby walked in wearing a high-fashion white gown, sat down beside Kane, and murmured with a smile, "Sorry I'm late. A brand shoot ran long."
The room fell instantly silent before buzzing with charged, suggestive tension.
I found Noah and sat down beside him.
Noah glanced at me, then said in surprise, "Wow, Wren, I just realized you and Ruby look so much alike."
I pressed my lips together and forced a smile. "She's a celebrity. You're giving me too much credit."
Of course we look alike.
Because she and I are twin sisters.
