First day
Amy Dove woke up to the sound of the Los Angeles sun filtering in through the blinds of her apartment window. She lay in bed for a few moments, relishing in the quiet before the flurry of activity that awaited her on this momentous day – her first day on the job at the LAPD.
As she swung her legs over the side of the bed and sat up, she took a deep breath to steady herself, anxious and excited all at once. She had been waiting and training for this day for years, and now it was finally here.
Amy was an aloof young woman, not one to easily make friends or open up to others. She had always been this way, preferring her own company and the quiet solitude of her own thoughts over socializing with others. It was just who she was.
But today, she prepared to face her colleagues and superiors at the LAPD. Despite knowing how important the first impression is, it cannot change who she is.
As she got dressed and ready for the day ahead, she mentally rehearsed what she would say and how she would act. She had studied and prepared for this day for so long, nothing can stop her.
Just as she was about to leave her apartment, her phone beeped with a text from her best friend, Zoe.
"Hey girl, how you feeling about the first day? Nervous?"
Amy sighed and replied, "Yeah, I'm pretty nervous. I want to show everyone what I'm capable of."
Zoe responded quickly. "You will! Just be yourself and be confident. You got this."
Amy smiled and felt a bit better, grateful for Zoe's words of encouragement. She took one last deep breath and walked out the door, ready to take on the day ahead.
As she arrived at the LAPD headquarters, she was greeted by the hustle and bustle of police officers and staff getting ready for their day. She took a few deep breaths before getting inside.
As she made her way to her new colleagues, she overheard some of their conversations.
Amy Dove, an aloof young woman, was on her way to meet her new colleagues at the Los Angeles Police Department. As she walked down the hallways, she could overhear some of their conversations.
She heard two officers discussing their weekend plans, with one asking the other if she wanted to join him for a hiking trip. "Nah, I'm more of a Netflix-and-chill kind of person," the other officer replied, causing both of them to laugh.
Another group of officers was talking about the latest crime statistics, with one saying, "It's crazy how much crime has gone down in the last few years. There's still a lot of work to be done, but we're moving in the right direction."
"You heard about the new case this morning..."
But as she continued to listen to their conversations, she began to feel annoyed. They had families, hobbies, and interests outside of work. They were passionate about their jobs and were committed to making a difference in their community.
Boring.
"Hey, did you hear about the new recruit starting today?"
"Yeah, I heard she's pretty quiet and keeps to herself. Not sure how she'll fit in here."
Amy pass with disinterest the comments about her, they were of no help. But she reminded herself that she was here to prove herself and show everyone what she was capable of.
With renewed determination, she walked over to her new superior, wanting to introduce herself with a smile.
As she walked into the office, she was greeted by Max Parker, who was waiting for her with a big smile.
"Hey there! You must be Amy. I'm Max, your partner," he said.
Amy gave him a nod before making her way to her desk. She had heard some hints of a new case while entering, and hoped it was on his desk.
Max followed her and continued to talk.
"So, where are you from? What made you want to become a cop?"
Amy sighed inwardly, not wanting to have to answer these types of questions. But she knew she needed to make a good impression on her partner. She replied simply, "I'm from out of state. I wanted a change of scenery."
Meanwhile, her fingers passed paperwork on the desk. When he finally found a new folder in her hands. Here.
Max wasn't deterred. "Well, no worries. We'll get to know each other better as we work together. Ready to get started on our first case?"
"More than ready."
She said while already reading the file.
"Come on, it looks like the scene is still fresh."
Amy was already running down the stairs to go to the parking lot, where they would take a service car.
"Why all this haste?" His partner asked her.
Amy didn't answer but signaled him to move. She had already turned on the car's engine.
"You know I should drive...!!!"
Amy didn't give him time to finish speeding down the road of Los Angeles.
All the way to the crime scene, Max continued to chatter on, trying to make conversation with her. Amy was polite but distant, not wanting to give anything away about herself.
