I built the core AI behind a billion-dollar tech company. Its CEO, Alexander, kept one fact out of every interview and investor briefing: I was his wife. For five years, I fixed the failures in his code and covered the gaps in our marriage. Then he gave my life's work to Chloe, the first love he had just hired back. Tonight he expects me to clean up her mess again. Instead, I file my resignation and put thirty days on the clock.

Chapter 1 The Shadow Behind the Code
The launch crowd came through the backstage speakers as a muffled roar. On my monitor, Alexander Schwartz stood under the gold stage lights and smiled for the cameras. The screen behind him ran through five years of Genesis milestones. I knew every one of them by the bug that had kept me awake the night before. My husband had always looked comfortable taking credit. “And the visionary mind, the lead architect behind Project Genesis.” He let the applause build. “The brilliant and talented Ms. Chloe Walton!” For one stupid second, I had expected my own name. Chloe stepped into the light in a clean black dress and accepted the applause. Five years of my late-night commits rolled behind her on the presentation screen. She had returned to the company six months earlier. Until then, she had never worked on Genesis's core architecture. Alexander still put her name on the launch deck. I had written the first line of Genesis's core code and signed off on the last. No one in that room heard the name Evelyn Neel. They found me backstage a few minutes later. Chloe came over first, tears ready in her eyes. “Evelyn, I am so, so sorry. I told him not to. I never wanted your credit.” Alexander put a hand on my shoulder and tightened his fingers. “We’re a team. Chloe just came back to the country, and she needs a serious project on her résumé. Don’t make this difficult.” My work would give his ex-girlfriend a clean start. To him, that settled it. For five years, I had fixed the code before investors saw it, rewritten his technical notes, and accepted a title far below my actual work. At home, I did much the same for him. “Of course,” I said. “For the good of the company.” His grip eased. He smiled, already satisfied that I would fall in line. I left them to the celebration and went upstairs to my office. The floor was empty, and the city lights covered the windows. At my terminal, I opened the Genesis Innovations HR portal and pulled up my employment record. *Resignation. Effective in 30 days.* The company required a month's notice. I submitted it at 9:17 PM. My lawyer had warned me that the notice period would give Genesis time to challenge my departure. It would also make every step of my exit impossible to dismiss as impulsive. Then I opened my legal folder. Between the patent filings and nondisclosure agreements sat the document my lawyer had prepared weeks earlier. *Dissolution of Marriage.* I printed it and placed it among the quarterly compliance forms and routine intellectual property authorizations Alexander never read. The signature page stayed at the back. The divorce agreement sat in the middle, behind two forms he had already seen in previous quarters. The office door opened. Alexander walked in while pulling on his coat, keys rattling in one hand. “Chloe’s celebration dinner is starting. Are you coming?” His attention moved to the papers. “What’s all that?” “Quarterly IP authorizations. They need your signature before the fiscal day closes tomorrow.” He checked his watch. “I don’t have time to read them. Tell me where to sign.” I slid the stack across the desk. “Final page.” He took my pen, flipped to the back, and signed without looking at any of the pages in between. I had watched that signature approve acquisitions, employment contracts, and licensing deals. This time, he barely kept the paper flat. “Right. I’m heading out.” He dropped the papers on my desk and left to celebrate Chloe. When the door shut, I scanned the signed agreement and sent it to my lawyer. The reply came less than a minute later. *Documents received. The 30-day countdown has officially begun.* I saved the message, locked the originals in my briefcase, and turned off the office light.
