CHAPTER1
~Danielle
The crashing continued as I stayed there cowering watching them destroy everything. I closed my eyes but it did not stop my tears from slipping through. I had given him my all and he had deceived me. I had been nothing but a pawn in his games.
Everything that I had ever worked for would turn to ash because I chose to love a man. The cacophony of destruction soon stopped and was replaced with an eerie silence. Then came the voice that crushed the pieces of my already shattered heart
"Dany, darling." There had been so much love in that voice but now it was all void of feeling. "Come out."
I refused mostly because my legs had now turned to jello.
"I will blow this place to smithereens with you in it." He threatened. "I want to see your face, dove."
At the mention of his nickname for me, my heart raced faster. Despite everything he had done, he still had that effect on me. I could not even feel fear or pain, I just felt numb. I rose to my feet slowly.
Liam was clad in a suit and exuded overwhelming power. His blue eyes were as beautiful as I remembered but now they were filled with venom as he gazed at me.
"There she is," Amusement filtered into his voice. His men laughed. I was a joke to him; A fool.
I bit my lip until I tasted the familiar coppery tang of blood.
"Don't be too harsh on her." Another voice came. "Intelligence is not really her forte."
My stomach dropped impossibly lower as my blood turned to ice. "Ve…ra?" My voice cracked.
My sister came into view wearing a fur coat, her lips painted red. Her heels clanking on the tiles as she took a position beside Liam. I gulped as he wrapped a sensual arm around her waist. It all felt like a prank, it had to be.
"Yes, Dany?" She quirked a wicked brow. Then suddenly she feigned surprise and used a hand to cover her mouth. "He didn't tell you?"
I looked between them and suddenly everything became clear and my world came crashing down. "We are sisters!" I screamed, hoping that it would reach the sister that I believed I had. Maybe she would realise what she was doing but no such luck.
Her face contorted into a sneer. "Step Sisters!" She tapped her temple with a finger. "Get that into your head!"
"What did I do to…" My tears came rolling down as a fresh bout of grief came over me.
"To deserve this?" She asked, her voice was incredulous as she stared at me with unadulterated loathing in her brown eyes. "You got everything. I got scraps. I was left out on the streets to fend for myself."
She was the victim? She was really acting like she was a victim. "You chose to leave." I reminded her. "You stole from father and disappeared to live the life you wanted. I worked day and night for what I got while you got to live and enjoy. I took everything s**t father threw my way." My anger rose like a lava from a volcano. I had the scars to prove it.
"You expected me to toil to get what I wanted?" She walked up to me. "To be like you. Danielle, the martyr, the saint." She spat the words at me like poison.
"Yet, I took you back." I whispered solemnly. "I forgave you. But grandmother was right, you are a good-for-nothing…"
A swift palm landed on my cheek, hard enough to take the breath from my lungs. I fell back and when I looked up, I saw Liam looking at me with disgust as though I was gum under his shoe.
"Liam…" I whimpered and hated how pitiful I sounded.
To my astonishment, his eyes softened as he smiled. "You are truly pathetic." He disparaged me. Before he swung his leg back to kick me.
I braced for impact but it never came because a familiar voice intruded before Liam's leg connected with my body. "Don't you dare touch my wife."
I opened my eyes to see another man slightly taller than Liam staring him down. The intensity was unwaving as the two men exchanged glares before the other man turned to me and reached out a hand. I blinked and looked from his hand to his face. His eyes were like shots of whiskey, in their colour as well as their intoxicating nature.
Had this man just called me his wife? When I continued to look at him stunned without taking his hand, he smiled. Yet it did nothing to lessen the tenseness of his features. He looked like a man artfully carved out of granite.
"Come, darling," His voice was deep as it was velvety and against my better nature, I felt my guard lower and the tautness in my shoulders ease. "Let's go." His voice was like whispered assurances and deep kisses in the early mornings. I found myself reaching out to take his offered hand.
He pulled me up with ease and he took off his jacket to place around shoulders. The astonishment of it all was not lost on me because I could see similar looks on Vera and Liam.
"W-what?" Vera croaked. "Wife?" She turned accusing eyes on me.
"You were seeing someone else." Liam's voice mirrored Vera's accusation. He was accusing me of cheating on him? He looked at the man who now had his arms around me. "You were seeing my brother?"
"Step-brother," The man corrected, throwing Vera's word back at her. Had he been watching all this time? Men filed in into my ruined coffee shop, stepping on broken things as they did. "We will be taking our leave now." He said as his men stopped on either side of his path. He walked out with me to the entrance to an awaiting black car. I did not need to look for too long at the vehicle to know that it probably cost more than all my internal organs. I followed him, feeling the heat of Liam's and Vera's stare on my back.
Another suit-clad man beside the car opened the door and the man slipped me in, making sure to watch my head. "I'll be back, darling."
He turned back to Vera, Liam and his men who had also crossed the threshold of my shop.
"What games are you playing, Dominic," He drawled.
Dominic? No wonder his voice had been familiar. Had he not been in a coma until recently?
"Games? I don't play with my women unlike you." His voice was icy and levelled. "You will leave her alone." An edge crept into his voice.
"That w***e owes me money." Liam's gaze landed on me.
Dominic shook his head. "Of course, it is like you to spit profanities like a caveman." He taunted. If I had not been so on egde and heartbroken, I would have smiled at the jab.
Dominic turned to one of his men and he nodded. I watched as the man threw bills in Liam's face.
"You can use that to get yourself some sweets to quell your sour mood in the meantime. I will send you the rest of what she owes."
My mouth unhinges and I swallow a gasp that threatens to escape. Dominic strolled back towards the car. As one of the men opened the car door for him to enter, Liam spoke, Venom dripping from his every word. "I hate you."
Dominic only smiled as he entered the car to sit beside me. "The sentiment is mutual." He replied, then we zoomed off into the night.
