Chapter one
Brad’s cheating was still messing with Angela two months after. Both of them had a strict boundary which they created after their marriage, nine years ago, which Brad crossed. “Maybe we should have a separate room” Angela blurted out while packing her hair in front of the large standing mirror in their bedroom. She wrapped the robe before turning to Brad. “What? I don’t think that’s a good idea” Brad responded. “Look, I know I messed up this one time, and I have apologised countless times but it seems you aren’t here anymore” Brad continued. “Unless you have other things in mind” he follows up. Angela stood still with her arms folded to understand Brad’s point “Other things like what?” she asked in confusion. “You tell me since you brought this up this early morning” Brad said with his voice a little higher than before. He began to pace around the room in what seem to be anger making its way to his voice. “Who knows how many times you cheated except for this one time I caught you” Angela made the statement while making her way to the kitchen to prepare breakfast for her family- her two kids, Riley and David, including Brad. The tension of the argument seemed to have died down a bit when she got into the kitchen because she didn’t want to infect the kids with her not so good morning energy which was meant for Brad only. “Good morning mom” says both Riley and David. She responded with enthusiasm wearing a bright fake smile she borrowed from God knows where. One thing she’s keen about mornings is to maintain good and positive energy. It sets the tone for her day. Apparently, she read an article in a blog post which seemed to be true according to her. And it’s been working for her. But putting up with this morning's energy wasn’t exactly working. At least not with Brad. She’s struggling with it like a kid learning to ride a bicycle. Today, Tuesday, is an appointment day for Angela since she has missed two of her last appointments with her old-time jeweler in downtown Texas. It didn’t take her more than twenty-two minutes to get done with both breakfast and the kids' lunch for school. She packed their lunch in a separate lunch box as usual while giving Brad a disgusting look no one else could see except for the person it was meant for. “Goodbye mom”, both her kids bidding her with a kiss each on her cheek. Brad was going to drop them off as usual since he took the same route to his office as the kids. Everyone else had left except for Angela, who leaned over the kitchen counter observing if she had left anything unattended meant for her kids, and at the same time going over an extra detail she might be missing that would be a key factor in her day activities. While she sat pondering over those details, a call came in on her mobile phone. She walked to the dining room where she left it. Getting to it, she picked it up, and it was Lina, her best friend since grad school. “Good morning Lina” “Good morning to you, my darling.I hope you had a wonderful night” responded Lina from the other end with a cheeky smile on her tone. “Sure I did” Lina is an art collector and has a show coming up in two days. Even though she had already informed Angela previously, she still wanted to ring it in her ear once again so what happened the last time she organized a show does not occur. Angela missed being present at her previous show because she wasn’t in the city. She is always a handful of help whenever Lina is organizing any sort of occasion. Even though Angela knows just a little about art and curating, her presence still means a lot. Like Lina would always say to her, “an outside opinion is always a welcome guest in nearly any field.” “Oh yes, I do remember, unlike the last time, this time around it would be a different case, I promise” said Angela. “I won’t have any disappointments this time around, girl!” Lina followed up. This would be a life-changing event for Lina. Apparently, the previous event garnered some prominent Italian art collectors' attention. She got to know about the news from her second sibling, Kate, a chef, when she was on vacation in Turin, Italy. Lina was skeptical about the news not until she received an article on her phone from Kate. “How is the preparation going? "Is everything set?” Angela asked as she made her way to the refrigerator for some early morning strawberries. “Well, I just got off the phone with my promoter, and he assured me everything was in place. But I still have to drive down to the event center to see for myself, and uhmm..probably see if there will be a need for something to add a little light to the event. Just maybe, so yeah” “Do you have anything in mind you think might add some spark to your big occasion?” “I can’t think of one at the moment. That’s why I need to drive down there.” Angela’s response and tone were a bit off than usual and Lina might have sensed that over the phone but she ignored and didn’t want to probe for further details. At least for now. The “okay” from Angela sounded like a response you would dish out to a stranger trying to strike up a conversation in a queue. But then it took some seconds for Angela to ask- “what time does it start?” “Event starts at 3pm” Maybe Angela might have noticed her response to her best friend hadn’t been the same after a few minutes into the call. It didn’t bother her much because they always talked about their issues with each other, and sought advice whenever it gets tough. The ticktock sound on the kitchen wall reminded Angela of where she needed to be soon. The call lasted fiveo more minutes before she informed Lina of her daily schedule.
