She went silent for a couple of seconds. Apparently, she wasn’t the only person who did some facial recognition.
The woman seemed a bit more relaxed than Angela in the situation.
“Angela?” she called out.
“Khloe?”
It was Khloe. Khloe was her high school classmate who admired the same guy Angela had a crush on before they began dating as teenagers. But Khloe never backed out because she wanted him for herself.
She even got physical with Angela at some point, and it earned both of them humiliation and suspension.
Angela was lost in words and all she did was stare in confusion that brought back long-lost memories of high school. A memory she dreaded.
She did a quick access on Khloe which didn’t match up with beauty back in high school. Marriage and kids must have taken a giant toll on her wellbeing.
She tried her best not to let out her expression of what she was feeling towards her, since it was all in the past.
She managed to pull it off and composed herself in the best possible manner rather than to display mockery with a sense of sarcasm.
She did what she does best whenever she did not want to have a long chat and dismiss one off.
She put on a fake smile that signifies that someone means nothing to her.
“Is that your child?”
“He's mine. He turned five two days ago.”
“That's beautiful”
Khloe pulled him by her side while trying to keep the toddler from crying.
“He's cute. What's his name?”
“Dominic”
They had a few more chats before it got to Angela's turn to pay for the items she had picked.
No exchange of contact. No, nothing, just a chit-chat between two former high school classmates.
While making her way to the parking lot, a young boy in his twenties emerged from the corner and striked a conversation with her.
Angela's aura must have caught his attention and he made the move.
The young man was straight flirting with her, and she played along till she got to her car.
She bid him goodbye and never said anything else again to his growing attention.
A lot more was on her mind than giving this stranger who emerged from the corner attention.
After setting her grocery bags in the backseat, she did her usual thing; applied another lipstick.
Before she drove off, she began to reminisce about what had just happened in the store. A topic of discussion between her and Lina had just presented itself from nowhere even though she kind of felt pity for Khloe in such shape.
Angela wasn't the only person who never liked Khloe. Lina never for once liked her. Of course, she's her best friend, and she's automatically on her side.
Isn't that what best friends do for each other? Be on each other's side.
The afternoon sun was scorching as she drove past the growing city activities. She lowered her glass to filter some natural air instead of the car air conditioner.
“We just touched down”, a notification popped on her phone.
It was from her younger sister Emily, who's in town for their mom's sixty-fifth birthday celebration, which is the following day.
She didn't bother replying to the message, hence she was on the steering wheel. All that occupied her mind was to get home and unpack, and maybe a little rest.
Shortly after she got home, she swiped Emily's message to the right from the notification bar, and she did some unpacking afterward.
It was 3:15 pm when Brad came through the front door with the kids. Lunch was already set at the dinner table, and it was Brad's favourite; sandwiches, salads, burgers, wraps, pasta, and soups.
She asked everyone what their day looked like and Riley was the first to jump with her answer.
She complained about her teacher stepping outside their curriculum to teach what wasn't there, and on top of that, she complained about how mean she could be sometimes, which almost ruins everyone's mood in her class.
Both Angela and Brad stayed quiet while she narrated her ordeal at the dining table. They both made a mental note and promised to come by the school to see the teacher in question to address the issue.
“Food is getting cold”, David said, diverting their attention to the reason why they had gathered at the table.
“I finally made the appointment with the jeweler today” Angela told Brad after lunch.
“Finally, someone didn't disappoint this time, after some back and forth”, Brad answered. He continued, “ So tell me, how it went? Oh! Wait, don't tell me he got the best of you when it came to the negotiation part”
They both bursted into laughter and a few moments later, she reached for her hand bag and brought out a brown envelope, dropped it in front of Brad.
He reached for it, opened it slightly.
“It looks like the guy got the best of you baby. It's barely $4,000 in here”
“I spent part of it on groceries and no, he didn't get the best of me. He made a wire transfer of $9,000 to my account which totals $13,237”
Brad was impressed with her negotiation skill. Finally, his negotiation tactics is rubbing off on his wife. This actually put a smile on his face and made him feel good despite their differences.
“I'm impressed you did really great compared to other times” he concluded before my moving to the sitting to grab the tv remote.
“You know my mom's birthday is tomorrow and I won't be here with you guys for at least three days” Angela told Brad.
“How am I just getting to know this now and besides, why three days?” He followed up.
“I'm sorry I'm telling you this late. Maybe I have had a lot on my plate with work. I will be going for Lina's art event from there, and that's what sums it up to three days”
Brad wasn't having it and became furious. He dropped the tv remote and left the sitting room for Angela. He headed straight to their room and she immediately followed him up.
“You are not spending three days away from your family” he cut.
“This is the first time I am going to spend such time away from home, besides, you know what those days are meant for. I missed the last art event Lina organized and not being present for this upcoming event makes me look like a bad friend” she uttered in a low tone.
“I am not not angry that you are spending days away from home, but because I am just getting to know this now. I am your husband and this is what you ought to have said earlier”
Angela was growing impatient and minutes later she told Brad she's had enough already and she will be living for her mom's house tomorrow to catch up with Emily, her sister.
Meanwhile, she hadn't told Brad Emily was in town. He got to know in
the heat of the moment.
Before Brad could say a word Angela slammed the door shut a left the room.
