If there was something Angela’s family keeps tabs on like keeping up with the Kardashians, it was birthday celebrations. They never miss it.
It felt more like a tradition. Something her mom taught her and her sister Emily as kid.
Her mom's birthday celebration wouldn’t be any different as family and friends gathered at the backyard with drinking going round.
The barbeque was sizzling with fresh meat and kids weren't left out in the celebration even though the celebrant is an elderly person.
Someone they cherished her heart-warming presence and kind heart.
As time passed, more people trooped in with gifts for the celebrant. Angela was met by family and friends she hadn't seen in ages, and it wasn't what she expected, not in a bad way.
Her favourite uncle as a child was someone at the corner with his walking stick exchanging pleasantries with guests.
Angela and Emily had some catching to do before the guests were welcomed and plenty more.
A text from Brad came in on her phone asking how the celebration was going, but she ignored it and focused totally on the good moment she was having.
She was still holding grudges from their last night difference and this wasn't the time to divide her attention.
She stood in the middle of the sitting room admiring the decoration she pulled off with Emily. It was fantastic, especially the large frame of her mom wearing the neckpiece she gifted her a few years back. A masterpiece she never wanted to trade for any reason.
“Aha!, her comes the celebrant,” Emily echoed with a smile on her face.
Her mom responded with a warm smile on her face and added a “Thank You”.
Guests at the backyard came gathering in the living room as soon as their attention was called up to make a toast.
While the guests were settling in, an elderly woman who was being greeted by another guest suddenly moved her hand way too fast and poured a good portion of her drink on Angela.
She felt disappointed initially with her expression and fought back the urge not to react, then put back a smile on her face.
“Don't worry, I will just get it cleaned up” she said to the woman and patted her on her shoulder before heading to the bathroom.
After getting cleaned from the wine spill, she presented her mom with a birthday gift. It was a framed hand-made drawing of the house her mom grew up in.
It was a drawing carefully crafted by Lina. Her mom's eyes lit up, and she cherished it which almost made her drop a tear in front of the guests.
The celebration lasted more than four hours before the house was left with just a few guests who were having a great time with the celebrant with their voices going over the roof because of having too much wine.
They never bothered because it'd been a long time since they had such a moment in life.
Angela and Emily, on the other hand, dipped somewhere around the corner of the room with wine glasses, catching up with what they had missed.
Immediately Emily asked her what was the latest with Brad. She dodged the discussion, telling her not to press further because Brad wasn't acting right for a while.
She never went into other details, especially his recent cheating and how he never wanted her to spend time away from home for their mom's birthday celebration and Lina's art event.
The night wasn't so young anymore before the remaining guests left for the various homes.
…
It was a new day which meant new activity for Angela. Yesterday was her mom's birthday and today is Lina's art show.
There was no reason for her not to be there as she had been anticipating this.
While she was yet to rise up from bed, she picked up her phone and dialed Lina's number to know what she was up to at the moment.
Lina answered her call but informed her that she was on the steering wheel and assured her that she would return her call once she got to her destination.
She called Brad to check up with him and the kids. Their conversation lasted just a few minutes before she headed to her mom's room to check up on her.
Here Emily was already having a morning chit-chat with her. She joined them in whatever they were discussing. After a few moments of their chat, she told both of them what her day's schedule consisted of.
Angela admired the decoration of the hall. Of course, it was for some art show, not for something way and less, and she expected it to stand out.
Lina was somewhere at the corner talking indistinctly with some other people when someone tapped her from behind.
Her eyes lit up and as she saw it was Angela. She greeted her with a warm hug.
“Glad you made it sweetheart”
“Glad I did. The decoration here is beautiful.”
“Thanks sweetheart” before telling her to take a walk and see the rest of the art collections while she attends to other people.
While admiring the collections and the beautiful people that came to the show, a particular art caught her attention, which had some sort of reddish broken glass as the design. She walked close to take a closer look.
It was a beauty at first sight. But not as beautiful as the long ash-coloured gown she was putting on.
“It looks amazing, isn't it” a voice from behind interrupted her admiration.
Angela's eyes lit up as she saw the handsome face that embodied the bold voice that had just spoken to her.
She hesitated for a few seconds before she gave a response.
“Uhmm, it's quite an interesting piece of art that a person who isn't so much of an art lover would like to have for home decoration”, she finally responded with a smile on her face.
“My name is Miles” he said, extending his hands.
“Angela” she responded.
Miles had this masculine aura that got her engaged, including the well he spoke. Gosh, Angela was admiring the piece of art, but she did more side admiration, stealing glances whenever Miles looked away.
It was like a new world had just opened up to her so much she forgot she was married with two kids.
She stood staring at those fine pieces when Miles returned.
“Here you go” handing her a glass of wine as she returned with two glasses. They did a toast before slowly sipping their respective wine.
They took turns moving from one end of the hall to another, giving their opinion of each of the art pieces, what made them stand out, what they thought might enhance the market value and so on.
Lina finally met with both Angela and Miles. She had a few chat with them, asked if they were having a good time before heading to talk with others.
The moment was an experience Angela craved. Maybe because Brady wasn't acting right and this opportunity felt like a mental getaway from all the troubles.
…
A few weeks later, the connection she had with Miles was still concrete as a brick wall. They would text each other from time.
Miles is a smooth and easy-going person. Always wanting to indulge in intelligent conversation.
You can't throw a random topic at him during a chat and he wouldn't know how to navigate and stay afloat.
This was a part of him Angela loved because she would dart a topic whenever they are having a conversation just to see how he would answer that.
This was a huge turn on for her and she would always learn a thing or two from him. Something Brad didn't exactly measure up to.
They talked at intervals and this happened right under Brad's nose unknowingly because he worked away from home compared to Angela who worked from home.
“Hey, what are you doing tomorrow afternoon” a text popped up on Angela's phone.
She smiled seeing the name of the sender. It was no other than the one person giving her the thrill she had so much missed.
“Not much on my plate handsome. A few errands here and there and I'm back home” she replied with a smile on her face.
“I'm taking you out on a lunch date, get ready” another text came in.
…
“You seem to have a great taste with picking restaurant. How did you find this place” Angela teased Miles while going over the menu.
“Let's just say I'm a connoisseur for beautiful things, and beautiful women deserve beautiful things” he replied.
Angela was stunned with his flirty response. She loved every bit of it. Something Brad rarely did. It brought back memories of her youth when she wasn't accustomed to nobody.
Being with Miles brought out different side of her she never thought possible. It was like a new world has opened up.
The date was a blast and they both had the time of their lives during which they got to knows more about each other up close and personal.
“Let's do this some other time” Miles added at the end of the date.
Of cours
e Angela would give a arm and a leg for this to continue.
They gave themselves an intense hug before getting in their various cars.
