24 IT’S ALL IN THE EYES Jake strutted towards them. As was his usual way, he nodded at Mary and threw her a smile halfway between a leer and a compliment. Before she’d had time to respond and to her utter amazement, he then flashed exactly the same look to Liza. “All right, girls?” he said. “Drinks?” he asked, leaning on the bar. Patrons either side of him shuffled along or turned their heads away slightly. Made sure he had plenty of space. They had all been waiting longer than him but he clicked his fingers and the barman came immediately. “Yes Jake?” he muttered.
