Chapter 1
When I was younger, I had the persistent dream that one day my life would become a fairy tale. My nighttime routine always includes reading a fairy tale that features a princess, and those stories have inspired me to one day live a life that would be fit for a princess. "You're getting too wrapped up in that love story you've been reading over and over again, Tria," Dian said. I was in a deep trance, but her words snapped me back to reality. I let out a deep sigh. She got that right. Dian and I have been friends ever since we were very young. We've been in school together since kindergarten and will graduate from the same community college together. Dian's presence made me cautiously put down my book and look up from where I was reading. Romantic prose. I know he'll start making fun of me again, calling me a fool and a martyr, but I'm not going to let it get to me. Instead of standing in the sun, we retreated to the shade of the nearby bleachers, which are situated on the field and near the trees. We're celebrating our final day of high school by eating lunch together. “Oh, I don't understand why you put down the book you were reading. Let me just take a quick look," she said as she wiped away her sweat. "It's very warm here. Why do you want to be placed in this spot so much?" She voiced her displeasure. Well, the temperature is very high. I aimed my glare directly at her face and focused it there. "Then why are you keeping on following me here? You are free to go to the canteen at any time that is convenient for you." I said to her while giving her the evil eye. “You don’t need to be here, Dian.” She shook her head quickly. "Well, what am I supposed to do by myself over there? Sit there and keep waiting for a miracle to come over me? What? Speak with the insects there? You're here, so it stands to reason that I am as well.” I just shrugged and tried to keep my focus on the field. “To fill idle time, why don't you? You'd rather be whining somewhere else, rather than here with us.” I answered her. I closed my bag and re-stowed the book I'd been reading after making the comment. I just put a bookmark on the page to help me keep my place when I read on. The building that houses the College of Engineering can be seen very clearly from where we are. I don't see any reason to leave this spot, especially not now, as we have a clear view. When I noticed that the CE students were beginning to leave the building, I snatched up my camera and got it all set up. "Oh... Before, I didn't understand why you always wait here.” Dian, as we sat while sipping drinks from the canteen she took over, said “You always seem to fit in here, and now I know why.” I adjusted my camera lens and focused on someone. There, I have finally seen you! “Dian, please hush up. I'm trying to concentrate.” “Okay, off you go! Concentrate on that instead. Don't mind me, I'll just sip some juice over here,” she said with a teasing sound. I immediately followed her instructions. I didn't pay any attention to her repeated attempts to tease me. I’ll let your mouth dry out. During the time that I was taking pictures of my subject, Dian made a number of comments off to the side. I made an effort not to distract her as much as possible, but when she came close to mentioning the name, I swiftly put away my camera and fixed an evil glare on her. “To be honest, I assumed it was Nikolai you were taking pictures of. Well, it ends up like that—" “—Dian! C'mon, your mouth! Sooner or later, someone will hear you, and when they do, what else can they possibly think, huh?” I focused my eyes on her. Then, I put down my camera and looked through his recent shots. Dian looked at me and laughed. "What? I haven't even started talking yet, and who cares about ‘what else can they possibly think?’.” She made light of the situation. "Oh come on, Tria. You've had too much coffee in your body." “Shh! Please, behave yourself…” The bell rang just as I was about to finish my sentence. This means we need to head back to our room. I glared at Dian because of what happened. “Oh, why are you looking at me like that?” Dian, who was acting defensively, said, "I had nothing to do with ringing the bell." "My shots aren't very good, and there aren't enough of them because you're the one making all the noise," I told her how disappointed I was in her. "There's not much time left! I hate you!" Dian didn't answer me anymore and she simply picked up her bag as she left the place. "Get mad at me all you want. I will understand you, but no matter what you say there, our lunch is over." Because of this, I hastily re-stowed my camera inside my bag and zip-locked it before slinging it over my shoulder to carry. But just before I left entirely, I cast one last look back. Now, he was with my older brother and their friends, and they were all smiling and laughing as they sat on some bleachers near their building. Oh gosh, he has got some seriously good looks. This man is enough to awe any woman. **** Everything I did in class, from the first minute to the last, was preoccupied with whether he would join my older brother, Nikolai, later at home and make their plates there or will he spent his night at home once again since he always does that whenever Nikolai and he have something to finish as soon as possible. Yes. The man I had a crush on for a long time has been my older brother's friend since childhood. This is why I will respond confidently with "Yes" whenever I am asked if I am familiar with the man I wish to spend time with. Nikolai, my older brother, and Gael. Yes, Gael is his real name. They typically spend their time at home studying since, aside from their relationship as best friends, they are also classmates at school. Well, I know Gael only considers me a sister, but I couldn't pass up the chance to spend time with him and be with him. Simply because I think he'll find me interesting. Not even now, but maybe someday. Before I left school and went back home, I quickly ran the CR to retouch and fix myself. It is my daily habit to assure myself that before I leave, I am always looking at the best version of myself. When I came out of CR after touching up, I came across my brother Nikolai. “Oh! I know you're over there, little girl; I've been searching for you. Where did you come from and where did you go?” He walked toward me and, as he always does, ruffled my hair. Suddenly, I became irritated. "Nikolai! Why did you mess up my hair? Then, will you just mess it up? Do you have any idea how long it took me to style my hair?! You are such an annoyance.” I said, annoyed. Nikolai scoffed at my comment. “It's my fault. My apologies.” He continued to add teasing laughter to his remark. “I can’t believe that our baby girl, Tria, is already a teenager, huh? Mastering the art of self-care? Perhaps you're already in love?” he asked. I started walking to the parking lot where my brother's car was parked before he could do anything else to make me angry. My brother, Nikolai, was already an experienced driver by the time he turned 18, so our family celebrated the milestone by gifting him a car. "Couldn't someone be flirting or you already have a boyfriend so you're learning how to do make-up and stuff?” Nikolai remarked as we approached his car. When I heard that, my eyes widened. What he said made me anxious right away. I turned to Nikolai right away. He is unaware of the fact that I've long desired his best friend. Only Dian is aware of the fact that I have had a secret crush on Gael for quite some time. That's why I shook my head quickly, faster than a ticking clock. "Huh? What on earth are you talking about, Nikolai? I don't have time for that..." but with your best friend, there is. I shook my head and laughed to myself silently. When we finally reached the vehicle, I popped open the passenger door. When I looked over, I was taken aback when I saw a person seated there.
