Rockbridge Pack

Alpha Tokala It was that time of month when I went out alone to be one with nature. Or at least I tried to go out at least once every month. There was something soothing about shifting and becoming one with nature. On my outings I would run fast and hard, I would end up many miles from home. Often outside our territory, but since the next closest pack was close to 100 miles away, I was safe to roam as far as I liked. I finished up the few phone calls I had to make this morning and was about to leave when my phone buzzed. I was about to ignore it when Ella, my Gamma mind linked me. ‘It’s Alpha Jacques from up north. He was pretty insistent he talk with you.’ ‘Thank you Ella.’ I replied. I let out a deep sigh, nature could wait a few more minutes. I reluctantly walked over and picked the phone up. “Hello.” “Tokala?” The voice on the other line said, instantly irritating me. “This is Alpha Tokala Holt, who am I speaking with?” “Alpha Jaques.” I knew of Alpha Jaques, the arrogant son of a b***h. I cut him off, “Oh Jaques DePont up at the Crimson pack." I purposely left his title off as he had done to me. “Ahh, so my reputation precedes me.” The arrogant b*****d boasted. My wolf Nitrous scoffed at his arrogance. “No, I saw a memo come through from you a couple weeks ago.” I said sounding board. I could swear I heard a growl, even through the phone. Nitrous was cracking up in my head. The male on the other end of the line cleared his throat, “Well, that is why I called. We did not hear from your pack about the missing female.” I sat down behind my desk and leaned back in my chair, letting it rock back and forth. “You did not hear from us because we have nothing to report.” I lied. ‘Liar, liar, your pants are on fire.’ Nitrous sang out in my head, making me tell him to shush. “The name Ferrari, its familiar. Is she part of your pack?” I asked, curious about the situation, as I put my feet on my desk. “She is the daughter of one of the Alpha’s that are part of the Crimson Alliance.” The bulbus a** explained to me. “Did she get taken?” I asked, wanting to know more as I picked up the picture that had been sent out in an ‘All pack bulletin’ a couple weeks ago. “We are not sure what happened, we just need to know she is safe.” “Well, it is honorable of you to help the others within your Alliance.” I knew of the DuPont’s and they did not help others unless they had something to gain from it. “Maybe she is just out in search of her mate.” I said, coaxing him on to learn more. “She is to be mated to my son.” Jaques growled out. I could tell I had hit a nerve. ‘Ahhh, there it is.’ I said to nitrous. “But she is only twenty.” I had looked her up in the data base as soon as I saw the memo come through. “That is true, Tokala, but they are in love. You know how these kids are these days.” His tone changed; I knew there was more to the story than he let on. I also knew his son was as much of a pompous a** as he was. They believed they were the strongest pack within the US territory. I knew of other packs I believed to be stronger, my own pack included, but we did not flaunt our strength. His dropping my title again also had not gone unnoticed, even my best friend and Beta rarely did not use my title. “Well, Jaques, unless you have anything useful to tell me I need to go, but I will certainly be on the look out for little Miss Ferrari.” I said and hung up. I sat for a bit, looking at the picture, thinking back. Months ago, my Beta had come back from a day of traveling to a neighboring pack with a few of the other males to tell me about a lone she-wolf he saw on the train. He had noticed the same scent around the human town a few times these last months. When this memo came through, I brought Mac into my office and showed it to him and, sure enough, he had no doubt that this was the same she-wolf. Mac has been trying to hunt her down ever since. Mac was young to be a Beta. I promoted him at the age of 18. Mac just recently turned 21. I let him travel to other packs often in hopes he would find his mate. No luck as of yet. I tried explaining to him, many of us did not find our true mates. I am now 27 and still have not found mine, nor has my Gamma Ella who is 24. I could have told Jaques about the missing female being close to my territory, but I wanted to talk with her first. She had been alone, so I had no doubt that she ran by choice and had not been kidnapped. I mind linked Mac, “How is it going?” “Hey, thought you would be gone by now.” Mac linked back. “I was on my way out when DuPont called looking for that she-wolf.” “Did you tell him?” Mac asked me. “Naw, I want to bring her in first, see what is really going on.” “Well then, I am going to make your day…I got eyes on her right now.” I removed my feet from the top of my desk and sat up straight. “You’ve got her?” “Not exactly. I caught her scent on the train this morning. Been following her at a distance. She’s been around people all morning.” I glanced at the clock. It was almost lunch time. “I could skip my outing tonight.” I hated to put off going out for a run but…. “Na, she’s around humans, this is going to take time. I don’t want to spook her or make a scene. You go out as planned. If all goes well, you can question her in the morning.” I sat thinking for several seconds. "Okay, bring her in, I'll see you in the morning." We cut the mind link and I sat studying her picture for a bit longer before deciding to leave for my run.
