Five years ago, Casey Whitmore disappeared without a trace. The authorities ruled it a runaway. The town moved on. But Elena Marlowe can’t forget because she knows something she’s never told anyone: she was there when it happened. Now, as the anniversary of the tragedy approaches, a forgotten clue resurfaces, and she is forced to confront the truth she's been fleeing from. Someone is hiding something in town…and they will do whatever it takes to keep it that way. But silence has a price, and she may not survive to uncover the truth.

Chapter 1 – Ghosts of the Past
Have you ever noticed how old libraries have a peculiar, comforting scent, like paper, dust, and something else? For Elena, it was basically therapy. She’d run her finger down the spine of a first edition “Dracula”. ‘’Yeah, the real deal,’’ and just let her mind drift. Meanwhile, outside, Harmony Creek was getting all artsy with the sunset, gold and amber dripping across the sidewalks, but inside? Total hush. If peace and quiet had a headquarters, it’d be this library. Too bad her head was a mess anyway. “Find what you’re looking for, Elena?” She just about jumped out of her skin, nearly dropped the book, too. It was Evelyn Ward, the local gossip queen and reporter, with hair so perfect that it looked like it belonged in an ad for expensive shampoo. Those icy blue eyes of hers? Always felt like X-rays. And today, they were locked on Elena, practically pinning her to the shelf. “Just browsing, Evelyn,” Elena said, trying to sound casual, but honestly, her voice came out all thin and shaky. Ugh. “Browsing,” Evelyn echoed, lips curling up in a little smirk. “You always say that. Kind of odd, with the anniversary coming up.” Like a punch to the gut. Elena’s stomach twisted. She hated how Evelyn could cut right through you, no mercy. “Anniversary of what?” she said, playing dumb. It wasn’t her best lie, but whatever. “Come on, Elena. Five years since Casey Whitmore disappeared. You two were inseparable. You must remember something.” Evelyn leaned in, perfume sharp and flowery, making Elena’s nose wrinkle. Elena went stiff. Casey’s grin flashed through her mind, then the memory of that night, the sick drop in her stomach. “I told the sheriff everything I knew,” she mumbled, voice barely louder than a squeak. Evelyn arched one of those perfect eyebrows. “Did you, though? Or did you just tell him what he wanted to hear?” Elena turned away, suddenly obsessed with straightening books that were already straight. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” “Don’t you?” Evelyn’s voice got all soft and silky, almost a whisper. “Harmony Creek eats secrets for breakfast. Some of them… well, maybe they’re better left buried.” Right then, the library door groaned open, and in wandered Noah Carter, baseball cap stained with grease, the whole small-town heartthrob vibe. Elena felt relief wash over her and instantly hated herself for it. “Hey, Elena. Evelyn.” Noah gave a nod and, for a second, checked Evelyn out before giving Elena his full attention. “Figured you could use a break. Wanna grab a burger?” “Yeah, thanks, Noah.” Elena tried to smile, tried to look normal. “Sounds good.” As they headed for the door, Evelyn called out, voice all singsong but with fangs. “Just remember, Elena, some ghosts don’t stay buried. Not when they know your secrets too.” Outside, the air had that bite to it, and the sky was doing its best impression of a bruise. Noah clapped Elena on the shoulder. “Don’t let her get in your head. She lives for drama.” Elena shivered, zipping up her jacket. “She knows stuff, Noah. Stuff she shouldn’t.” Noah frowned. “Like what?” She hesitated. Dragging Noah into her mess? Not exactly on her bingo card for the evening. “Doesn’t matter,” she muttered. They walked in silence, the diner up ahead buzzing with life, the usual mix of fried food and burnt coffee in the air. They slid into a booth, cold vinyl sticking to their legs. Noah leaned in, voice low. “Elena, seriously. You’ve been off for years. Just tell me. Maybe I can help.” She looked at him with those brown eyes, all loyal and worried, and her chest ached. But saying it out loud? Breaking the promise she’d made to herself? Not happening. “I can’t,” she whispered, barely hanging onto her composure. Suddenly, sirens wailed outside, tearing through the night. Sheriff Marlowe, her dad, blew past the diner, lights flashing like the Fourth of July. Noah watched, then looked back at her, jaw tight. “Something’s up. Something big.” Elena felt the old panic clawing up inside her. The past wasn’t dead. Not even close. It was digging itself out, getting ready to blow everything sky-high. What she saw, what really happened to Casey Whitmore… it was all about to come out. And her dad? Yeah, he probably suspected. But he had no idea just how much Elena was hiding.
