Suspicion
Scrolling through social media has become such a dull experience. It used to be so much more fun to use as a distraction tool from the real world. Now, all social media ever showed news of the real world where death was unavoidable, war was being waged and dictatorships were rising. Political leaders feuded on social media, Making toddlers look more mature than people in charge of running nations. Freedom was a luxury that was so rare, even in the "Greatest country in the world."
Trade wars, famine, Pestilence and the world being on the brink of another world war made life lose its' color. Getting a job is all that some people can focus on because living costs so much money. Even with a dying planet, surviving is what some people have the ability to do.
Besides, there was some hope in the world still. Friends are still around and music quality is skyrocketing. In rough times, music always seems to improve.
"I think I'm going to go on a walk. Maybe seeing some nature will lift my spirit. I do need to see about trying to see if anyone has any jobs I can do so that I can get some food."
Alyssa murmurs after she takes her morning medicine, even though it's already two in the afternoon. After that, she went ahead and changed clothes.
When she passes her mother in the living room, she said "I will be back by eight." It is not safe to be out past that anymore. It was hardly considered safe during the day.
Her mother just nods her head and says "It's supposed to rain later."
"I like rain anyways." Alyssa reciprocates without anything else following her words.
Walking is always incredibly painful. She had her phone and a charger with her, along with an inhaler she never actually used and a change of socks.
Walking without a sidewalk is always the most annoying experience. The group is uneven and inconsistently textured with grass, rocks and concrete always making it hard not to trip.
Surveys and Jobs are the only things that she was focusing on. Even though Alyssa has lived in this town for over a decade now, it is isolating to know that there are few people here that she's actually close to.
"Finding some odd jobs close to the house is always so hard." she complains to herself. "I need food that isn't cereal."
As she continues to walk, she occasionally mutters parts of conversations that she has with an inner monologue that runs wild.
The closest store took over an hour to get there (granted, an experienced walker- someone who has been walking for more than two weeks without using a car- could probably get there in half the time).
Alyssa went inside and had enough to get a slice of pizza and a cup of water (the water was free). The cool air within the facility felt so much better after walking in the hot sun for so long.
She went to the connecting stores to fill out the application forms and pray to any gods that she could even get a chance to get an interview.
With 34 online applications and 14 forms that have been physically filled out, she still hasn't successfully obtained her first job. From hospitalityoom service to restaurant cashier, application forms have been filled out with a lack of success. Hope has been gone for a long time, but even then, she needs a job to afford basic survival just like everyone else.
Getting a notification no longer brought a sense of dopamine, especially with social media.
$15.00 raffle tickets to receive a spot on Xpit
The asteroid was being used for profit now The man who can't even make a working car would be selling spots on an undoubtedly unsuccessful ship that would malfunction and be destroyed in action anyway.
With how desperate so many people were- especially those born before the 1980s. Many who are younger are already past the point of caring, some of whom are even waiting and hoping for it to come early, hoping that it won't be delayed.
$15.00 is suspiciously low for the price set by the richest and most narcissistic man on the planet. Why is he setting it so low?
Alyssa turned her phone off as the rain started. The walk home would be long and there is no chance of Alyssa trusting a stranger, even if that stranger is a female. She doesn't trust men, but with how this state has chosen politically, she's taking no risks.
The walk home in the rain was more serene than the scolding sun.
