The Return
The city had changed. Or maybe it was her who had changed. From the tinted window of the black car, she watched the skyline rise like sharpened glass against the evening sky. Lights flickered across towering buildings, painting the streets in gold and neon. Everything looked beautiful. Everything looked expensive. Everything looked like a place that once swallowed her whole. Her fingers rested calmly on her lap. A diamond watch. A sleek black purse. A pair of red heels that stood out even in the dim light of the car interior. She didn’t smile. Not anymore. “Miss, we’ve arrived,” the driver said gently, breaking the silence. Her eyes lifted slowly. Ahead of her stood a building that made people stop and stare. A towering glass empire that carried one name at its peak one name she knew too well. A name that used to belong to him. Her chest tightened for half a second. Then it was gone. “Open the door,” she said softly. The driver obeyed immediately. The cold night air brushed her skin as she stepped out. Her red heels touched the ground with a sharp, confident click that echoed faintly into the street. Click. Click. Click. Every step she took toward the entrance felt like a memory being buried alive. A security guard moved to stop her, but froze when she lifted her gaze. There was something in her eyes something that didn’t ask for permission. Something that made people step aside without knowing why. “I’m here for the board meeting,” she said calmly, handing over a sleek invitation card. The guard checked it. Hesitated. Then stepped aside. The doors opened. And the world she once belonged to… welcomed her back. Inside, everything was glass, gold, and silence disguised as power. People in expensive suits walked past her, laughing softly, speaking in low voices that carried importance. No one recognized her. That was the point. She walked through the hallway like she owned it. Like she had never been broken. Like she had never been thrown away. But inside her chest, something cold was waking up. Five years ago, she had walked out of a place like this with nothing but humiliation and shattered trust. Five years ago, she had been called a liar. A thief. A disgrace. And the worst part? He had believed it too. Or maybe… he had pretended to. Her heels stopped in front of the elevator. The doors opened. She stepped in. As the elevator rose, floor by floor, she looked at her reflection in the mirrored walls. A woman stared back at her. Not the girl she used to be. That girl had cried. Begged. Waited. This woman didn’t. The elevator chimed. Top floor. Executive suite. Her breath slowed but her expression didn’t change. When the doors opened, she stepped into silence. A long hallway stretched ahead, lined with glass walls and luxury lights. At the end of it was a door slightly open. Voices came from inside. One of them… she recognized instantly. Her heart paused but only for a second. Then it continued as if nothing happened. She walked forward. Every step was controlled. Measured. Like a countdown. Through the glass wall, she saw him. He stood at the center of the room, surrounded by men in suits. Tall. Calm. Powerful in a way that didn’t need explanation. His presence alone made the room feel smaller. He hadn’t changed much. But his eyes… His eyes had. She stopped outside the door. No one noticed her yet. Inside, he was speaking. “We proceed with the merger next week,” he said firmly. “No mistakes this time.” His voice was deeper now. Colder. More controlled. The same voice that once told her she was safe. The same voice that later destroyed her world. A memory flashed. Rain. Accusations. Her name being dragged through the dirt. His silence when she needed him most. Her fingers tightened slightly at her side. Then— He turned. The moment his eyes landed on her, everything stopped. The room didn’t move. No one spoke. Even the air felt different. For the first time in years, his expression cracked—not fully, but enough. Enough for her to see it. Recognition. Shock. Something else he quickly tried to hide. “Excuse me,” one of the men began, noticing her at last. But she didn’t look at them. Her eyes stayed on him. And his… stayed on her. Red heels. Perfect posture. A face they thought they would never see again. “Meeting adjourned,” he said suddenly, voice sharp. The room hesitated. “Now,” he repeated. Slowly, everyone began to leave. Confused. Quiet. Until only the two of them remained. The door closed behind the last person. Silence fell like a blade. He didn’t move first. Neither did she. Then finally, he spoke. “…You’re alive.” Her lips curved slightly. Not a smile. Something sharper. “I would’ve disappointed you if I wasn’t.” His jaw tightened. “You disappeared.” “I was good at learning from experience.” The air between them grew heavier. His eyes scanned her face like he was trying to find something familiar. Something soft. Something weak. But there was nothing left to find. “What do you want?” he asked quietly. That question. She had imagined it so many times. Different versions. Different endings. Now that it was real, her answer came easily. Everything. She stepped closer. Click. Click. Click. Her heels echoed in the room like a warning. “I came back,” she said softly, “to collect what I lost.” His expression darkened. “And what exactly did you lose?” She stopped just a few steps away from him. Looked up at him fully. And said the words that made the past come alive again. “Everything you took from me.” For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then A faint, almost unreadable smile appeared on his lips. Not relief. Not happiness. Something dangerous. “Then you’re going to stay longer than you planned,” he said quietly. Her eyes narrowed slightly. And for the first time since she returned… Something inside her shifted. Because he wasn’t afraid. He was expecting her. And that made her revenge feel a lot more complicated than it should have been.
