Chapter 1: A True Love’s Betrayal
“I’m breaking up with you.”
“Wh… what…?” My brain could barely register what I just heard. My true love, high school sweetheart, and man that I considered my soulmate was breaking up with me.
“Face it, Lily, we both know it never would’ve worked. My parents hate you and, well… I’ve become tired of people looking down on me because I’m with someone who’s lower-class. My parents may have made this a contract marriage with that woman but I’ve come to like her, I would even say I love her.” Despite every word that stabbed my heart, not once did he look me in the eye.
“Adam, please, I’ll do anything!” Of all things, I never considered myself to be the type that begs until now when my soul is at its most desperate. And when Adam finally made eye contact with me, there was a look in his eyes that he had never given me before.
Years ago, I never would’ve imagined that we would end up like this.
Back in school, I came from a lower-class family while Adam Windsor came from a family that were millionaires. Adam was handsome, charismatic, and the most popular kid in school. Meanwhile, I studied my hardest to get perfect scores on my tests. He was charming and had many friends. Meanwhile, I always helped fellow students who were in need. And, of course, Adam had many girls who had a crush on him, and I was one of them.
Then one day, my crush confessed that he had feelings for me too. There was nothing special about me meanwhile he was the heir to his Windsor family’s company. Adam confessed that he was always watching me and admired my compassionate nature without expecting anything in return. And I saw Adam beyond his handsome face and charming personality, I could see the kindness he held deep inside his heart.
I fell in love with him. ‘We’ fell in love.
Adam and I were high school sweethearts and dated throughout our teenage years. Our love was passionate and we were determined to have a future together. Unfortunately, that involved our families and Adam’s parents disapproved of our relationship from the very beginning.
“How could you involve yourself with that lowborn nobody? She could be a slut for all you know!” I could Adam’s mother shout inside their mansion even as I stood outside the front door, twiddling my thumbs in anxiety.
“Don’t call her that!” Adam would always stand up for me with defiance.
“You better not be having s*x with that filthy w***e!”
“MOTHER!”
It was always like this. His mother, Evelyn, would ridicule and scorn me every chance she could get. And then there was his father.
“Adam.” His deep, stern voice could slice any noise or silence. “Don’t forget your place.”
His father, Charles, was a serious man of few words. Not once have I seen him smile? He only cared about his company and strictly reminded Adam of his responsibilities. Adam would never dare to protest. But in the end, Charles didn’t care about me either. He may have ignored me but I could tell, like Evelyn, he still looked down on me.
And then there was Adam’s only sibling, a younger brother – Jackson.
“I don’t know why you stay with that i***t. Don’t you realize that he’ll dump you for a hotter girl?” He would always mock me for being ‘stupid’ though his intentions weren’t malicious like his mother’s.
“Go get your relationship and keep your nose out of mine.” I would retort back to him and he would respond by rolling his eyes.
Evelyn would say the cruelest things to me, spread rumors that I’m a w***e, and even publicly humiliate me. It had gotten to the point that her merciless terrorizing had traumatized me – making me hate being the center of attention.
But I endured for Adam’s sake. My love for him gave me strength and I was determined to live with him, to have a long and happy life with him.
When we grew old enough, Adam was going to ask for my hand in marriage but before he could get the chance to even buy me a ring, his parents dropped earth-shattering news on us.
A contract marriage.
Being heir to their family’s company, they were going to make Adam marry a woman from a wealthy family with a powerful name. I wasn’t informed of these people so I had no idea who they were or where they came from. I didn’t even get to see my competition’s face. All I did know was that as soon as Adam met her, he started acting differently.
Adam started responding to my texts less and less, rejecting my calls, and eventually stopped seeing me. So with a nervous, pounding heart full of anxiety, I went to his family’s mansion despite the fear of Evelyn answering the door. Instead, a woman I had never seen before answered the door.
She was stunning and practically glowed with beauty. With long, ginger hair and green eyes, it’s easy to imagine that many men’s tongues wag for her.
I spotted a tattoo on her shoulder that looked similar to the mark of an infamous, dangerous mafia hidden within the city. But since the tattoo was halfway hidden behind the sleeve of her dress, I told myself that I was just overthinking things. There’s no way a pretty woman like this would be in that criminal organization.
I could tell the surprise in her expression was fake when we came face to face.
“Oh! I didn’t know that we’d be getting a visitor today. Charles and Evelyn aren’t home at the moment, I can let them know that you stopped by if you’d like?” Her voice sounded excessively sweet.
“Um…” I was surprised that this stranger addressed Adam’s parents so casually and I wondered if she was a family member. I knew going to Adam’s parents was futile but I needed to know where he was at. “Sure. Just tell them that Lily Sterling stopped by.”
The woman’s sweet smile turned into a grin as she reached out her hand to shake mine. “It’s nice to meet you, Lily. My name is Alyssa Windsor and I’m Adam’s wife. He’s still in bed at the moment. Do you want me to go get him?”
I immediately felt like I was about to puke as my heart pounded in my chest, and my hand that shook hers trembled.
‘Alyssa… Windsor? This is the woman Adam was supposed to marry? Why didn’t he tell me?? Has he been alone with her this whole time? In bed? Don’t tell me he…’
Despite my reeling thoughts, I somehow forced a smile on my face.
“Please tell Adam to meet me at the park as soon as he can.” Though I managed to keep a smile on my face, my trembling voice showed my true feelings.
“I will if he’s awake. It was nice meeting you, Lily.” She didn’t even give me another glance before going back inside. To me, it sounded as if she was going to take her sweet time.
Nonetheless, I still went straight to the park and waited under the tree where we had our first kiss as teenagers. I knew he would know where in the park to come to, and despite it being several hours later, my heart still beat with relief before pounding with anxiety when I saw the unsettled look on his face.
Jackson was right.
Adam said the words to me that I thought I’d never hear him say.
“Please, Lily. Don’t make this harder than it needs to be. You’ll only embarrass yourself.” Adam didn’t even tell me goodbye or look over his shoulder when he walked away from me, leaving me collapsed to the ground and sobbing my tears of betrayal.
As expected, Evelyn stabbed me with her most painful words in my fresh wound. Charles didn’t care at all meanwhile Jackson turned away. Without love, my endurance shatters and I could no longer live there. I left the city for the countryside to attempt to live a peaceful life.
But my peaceful life didn’t last long since a month later I missed my period.
I was now permanently chained to the Windsor family, a family of monsters, Adam included. I was determined to keep my child away from them. Since Adam is the heir of their family company, he would eventually become the new CEO. If my child’s existence is exposed, the Windsor family will force my child to become the next heir.
I won’t let that happen. I’ll hide and protect my child from those monsters, no matter the cost. Even if it costs me my own life.
